"Mother, I was down the railway path, minding my own business and a strange bloke in short trousers and cheese cutter cap was walking along, talking to himself". "Well, when I say talking to himself, I mean repeating the same thing, over and over again, just a little bit different each time". "Strange lot from County Durham".

This "follow me around" was like a trip to Great Britain - so many atmospheric sites, absolutly love it. Those memorial dedicated to the railway workers, who have lost their lives, is marvellous - such an outstanding piece of art to honour the common man (instantly reminded me of Genesis' song "Driving the last spike", where it says: "I sold them my heart / I sold them my soul / I gave everything I had / But they couldn't break my spirit / My dignity fought back / Fightback") This episode was wonderful, thanks for taking us on this journey of inspiration, Michael! All the best Valentin

I live in North West Leeds about 10 minutes from Otley and my work office is in Shipley. Like you I just love wandering around looking at the architecture and urban landscape. I knew the cobbles on the entrance to the old Otley Station goods yard were still there but didn't know about the weigh bridge. I model narrow gauge but still based in this area. I'm currently building a coaching in in the style of the black bull in Otley.

Michael Great video there are so much inspiration for Chandwell in the smaller West Yorkshire Towns like Otley. If they can be seen in 2023 then would definitely be around in 1993. Love the Old Railway History, Otley Station was both a North Eastern Railway & Otley & Ilkey Joint both North Eastern & Midland. The line between Arthington & Burley in Wharfedale by then British Railways (North Eastern Region) closed in March 1965. The small Water building is so nondescript that its idea for Chandwell might need a bit of u backdating with older style doors & windows even if the window has a simple shutter ideal for a bit of Scotty on it. I have possible found some prototype inspiration for the extension at the rear of the Town Hall, including a lift tower behind the Old Woolworths High St Broadstairs Kent at the rear on the corner Dundonald Rd & Belvedere Rd. After all a lift would come in handy for Ben & his staff to get those beds & mattress up and down. Ian

What an absolute wealth of inspiration so jealous. Driven that A660 many times and know Otley also. I will view the place differently next time I visit with my layout in mind whenever that may be. 'The Chunder' now that made me laugh out loud and the video ending outtakes also made me laugh. Any of us who have tried to film anything for this KZbin business know the frustration of getting tongue tied etc. Yes more of these inspirational video's please love seeing the old places now that I am a long way away.

Yes, a very good way to present what you are doing and most enjoyable. By the way they are setts, not cobbles - does it matter? Well sometimes it does. Having moved 200 miles to live I wanted some small stone: scalpings I said, finally we agreed on 2" crusher run. 12 tonnes to shovel by hand!

It's a wonder you didn't bump into the Otley KZbin photographer, Martin Henson, as you walked along that disused railway path, or took in the sights of Otley town. Chandwell is a great tribute to all of those little run down, slightly seedy, old manufacturing towns. You have captured it exactly Michael.

As always, your videos are inspirational and this one - deliberately so. What a fascinating area you live in. So much history and so much of Chandwell city to discover! Most of the history here in Australia gets immediately bull dozed, removed entirely and replaces with concrete and glass monstrosities that make the cities look very modern, shiny and new but entirely soulless. That is why my layout will be urban edge only and concentrating on industrial modeling allowing a large range, street running, very tight (appropriate for model rail sized areas) curves and slow running. That water building at the end is likely to be one of the very, very few items that may even find its way into one of the scummier areas of my own layout - it is so beautifully decrepit. thank you again for entertaining, encouraging and enlightening us all. BTW Here in Australia, they have removed SO MUCH rail infrastructure - even in the longer country lines (and by long, in Australia, that means something)- and turned them into "Rail Trails" for walkers, cyclists and other such activities that many of the more mature generations consider the rail trail an actual act of council vandalism that has resulted in far too many trucks on the roads.

Oh man I've been there and done that with the outside shoots. Had a mountain cyclist pop right into my shot last year. Nice work and thanks for showing us the secrets! One suggestion, the logo transition is really good, but it's quite strong and the times where you were talking during the transition seemed a little disconcerting, like I was getting hit in the face with a rapidly evolving brick. I think some more gentle transitions for the middle of the videos would ease the flow between cuts.
@Chandwell Жыл бұрын
Hhaah, yes, the look of shock/surprise on my face was genuine. I felt quite embarrassed and quickly walked away! The logo transition is my longest-surviving video thing, so I am loathe to change it. Nobody has mentioned it before, but I think I do sometimes bring it in too soon, or don't give it space to breathe. I'll keep it in mind though as I've never really considered it properly, and all feedback is helpful. Right now, I am firing up Inkscape to design the last part of Revs and I hope to show the finished article on Friday. Keep up your good work and I may have the new version soon! :)

I always find comments about the cantilevered footpath on the bridge to be a little strange... because to me who grew up in Otley the bridge should look like that.. I first walked across it as a toddler and I last walked across it... well, I can't remember when I last walked across it but I drove across it today and cycled across it yesterday. The locked gates are to the quaintly named Candle Factory Yard, the chimney is original to the Candle Factory, but the small building is newer as the candle factory burned down in the 1950's - Ten brigades fought the blaze which saw flames leap 50 feet into the air. At the height of the fire a stream of molten wax flowed into Station Road. As well as massive damage to the factory itself the incident resulted in molten wax finding its way into the town's sewer. As much as three feet of was left at some of the manhole points and there was an almost total blockage of around 170 yards of main sewer. Subsequent heavy rain meant the sewers were unable to cope, and a number of cellars were flooded - There's something you could put in Chandwell ! (pictures of the fire can be found www.ilkleygazette.co.uk/news/15467823.archive-recalls-rivers-of-wax-in-otleys-streets/#gallery4 )
