MT = Morse Taper The reason the dial handle pulls out is for when you’re threading, it stops it turning and from hitting your hand/catching on things. Nice lathe/Mill!

I'm impressed, I've never owned a lathe, but always wanted one. We had one at high school, but no one but the teachers were allowed to touch it!

I have that lathe without the mill and I've put a lot of time on it. Made hundreds of things. It's not perfect being cheep Chinese but it's way better than your Grizzly. I have the QC 1/2" holder and it manages 1/2" tools well. I cut 0.050" in steel once to see what it would do. It can cut within 0.001" with care. It's a good lathe for the money. I've abused it now and then and it's survived.

Nice, more than a toy for sure! That will be very helpful making the things you do.

Very cool, Elin. Use your amazing fabrication skills to weld up a proper stand for your new lathe. I notice that there is a big steel slab under it, that's a good starting point. Taper roller bearings for the spindle and steel gears will help with accuracy, repeatability and durability.

Elin, I'm jealous; what a nice addition to your shop! I hope you find the time to peruse the internet 'shopping mall' to examine the features on high-end lathe/mill combinations, so you can then modify your new toy to suit your needs. It sure does seem strange that the manufacturer did not design the unit so that the mill and lathe centers are in the same plane, just 90 degrees rotation. It seems a 'no-brainer' that milling a key way on a shaft would be desirable....?

Nice addition to the shop! I bought a 50s vintage Atlas 10" lathe on Craigslist a few years ago for $500, and it's a game changer. You start to wonder how you got along without a lathe once you have one. I'm out of tool-budget for a while, but I'd like to get an older Bridgeport mill at some point.

Elin, suggest logging several hours on your new-to-you lathe/mill before making any decisions re a stand alone mill. I have found this approach beneficial whether it was living in a house for a few months before jumping into remodel, or modifying my latest classic car project. More often than not, the changes I assumed I would make at the outset morphed into something else entirely.

Elin - One thing to keep in mind is this is a hobby set-up and not intended for heavy duty machining. These machines do very good work as long as you stay within their capability range and not try to push them beyond their limits. The good news is that you should be able to use the tooling from your prior machines. The bad news is that you are now on the slippery slope of needing more tooling for the new machine, LOL. Ask me how I know.

I’ve always been fascinated by machine tools. One safety tip - buy a small plastic storage locker and store your gasoline and other flammables in it, outside. Nothing but bad things happen when you store this stuff inside. Welding, cutting, grinding, etc. little fire becomes life changing when five gallons of gas is added. Very few businesses survive a fire, even with insurance. Not to mention the risk to people. If youve ever been severely burned you’ll do anything to avoid it happening again.

That's a great piece of kit Elin. As I watch you on many occasions working at floor level I often wonder if a scissor lift would make an economical and hugely beneficial investment as you would be able to work at a more comfortable height and also move it around within the workshop?

Dang...all those accessories! I'm surprised there's no sine bar! It looks maybe like they centered the mill attachment to the machine, possibly for balance.

I lost count of the times when I was tempted to buy a combined lath/mill .. Procrastination never gets you anything and I continued to use a nearby machine shop who's job completion time estimates were as random as a lottery draw. 😅..

It is weird that the mill centre does not align with the lathe centres. Bit of a problem as you will need the mill to fix the mill alignment issue.😮 😂
