@TheWorldEnd24 жыл бұрын
@@bluecollarcanuck and the Russians have combat data of the likely adversary that they would be facing with this high caliber guns, yes? Do the pirates use surface skimming ultrasonic ASM's now? Just because you make your gun bigger doesn't actually mean it's a good idea. Upgrading isnt always about increasing the caliber and most STS fighting is done over the horizon using ASM's. Deck guns serve mostly the role of providing rapid and accurate point fire against small assault boats and air-threats. Having a bigger gun for this purpose isnt all that great, as it means smaller muzzle-velocity, bigger mounts, higher recoil impulse etc.. The OTO Melara has stood the test of time because it just works in the modern ship arms industry centered mostly around missile warfare. Anything bigger would have to be able to perform up to or even above par with the 76mm to be even considerable. To me, making a bigger deck gun is just waste of time. Over the ranges that expected STS warfare is going to happen, a deck gun is near useless and even at shorter ranges a missile would be far more accurate, deadly and harder to intercept. The nuclear arms race wasnt just about measuring dicks. It was a very carefully calculated effort to produce enough arsenal to overwhelm any possible enemy terminal strike defence systems and assure mutual destruction in case of a received attack. This was true on both sides. What i WOULD call a dick measuring contest is the race to the moon

That would be amazing. If it works like stated then they should slap it on for self defense on every warship. I feel like CIWIS 20mm isn't enough and those are direct kinetic kills. A 76mm would allow further engagement range and could carry tungsten flak with a computer programing the rounds to fire as they leave the barrel like the Skynext system. (Think that is the one. Seen one take out a drone swarm in a single burst.) Don't know why the US doesn't use flak. No one has ever stated why but if a hypersonic missile is coming at you surely even small tungsten pellets would wreck the missile. The velocities involved would be enormous, and its a lot easier to hit something with a flak wall then it is with kinetic kills. The CIWIS has no margin for error.

As soon as Turkey annouced that it devoloping the gun, italians showed up, offered very convinient prices with reasonasle delivery dates. 8" DP? You sure about that? Never heard of a 203mm Anti-Air round. Max is 6", although most DP went under 5". Remember DP means surface / air so Low Angle / High angle firing - go try it with an 8inch gun and you'll find your mount ends up 2 stories deep...with 2 rounds a minute and a slow traverse and track e.g Total Shite. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual-purpose_gun
@stupidburp3 жыл бұрын
@@mwnciboo The Mark 71 8" /55 Major Caliber Lightweight Gun was reported to have been tested with anti air shells. It had a rate of fire of 12 rounds per minute and was light and compact enough to be installed on a destroyer, USS Hull. The Mark 16 semi automatic 8" gun also reportedly had some anti air rounds tested although they were not used in practice. It had a rate of fire of 10 rounds per minute. This system was heavy and bulky and used on some cruisers. Both of these guns had a theoretical dual purpose although not designated as such. With modern radar, fire control systems, gun laying machinery, automation, and shell designs a dual purpose 8" (203mm) gun is feasible. These days we would call them multipurpose guns, with anti air as one potential feature. A modern gun would be light, accurate, compact, move quickly, and have high rate of fire with few crew required to operate and maintain it. I would suggest having such multipurpose 8 inch guns in a dual mount turret on a new cruiser design. This could potentially be able to fire a total of 20-24 rounds per minute. An MRSI burst of around 6 shells is probably feasible with two guns. That should be plenty for shore bombardment missions. The primary weapon system would still of course be numerous VLS. Other air defense systems would also be included of course, the anti air mode for the 8 inch guns would just add an extra layer. Well suited for use against drone swarms for example.

the new oto melara 127/64 lw cannon has the same range as a medium-range missile, 120km with its volcano Munitions. the advantages of using the cannon to hit coastal targets are substantially 2. 1, once the cannon fires, the projectile cannot be intercepted by the air defense systems, because for 90% of the way, the ammunition behaves like a normal artillery shot, therefore not intelligent, not emitting any signal, it is not detected by the defensive systems, when the projectile is about 6000 meters from the target, it activates its guidance system and only then is it detected by the radars, but at that point, you only have a little more than 5 seconds to react, because the ammunition travels at 1200 meters per second. the second advantage is the cost, an Otomat missile costs 1.5 million dollars, while the Volcano ammunition costs between 60 and 90,000 dollars per unit, depending on the type of ammunition, and the cannon can fire 60 a minute. obviously installing the 127 has higher costs and takes up a large portion of space on board the ship. therefore, it cannot equip smaller units as the 76 can. It all depends on the needs of the navy ordering it. for example on the Italian units of the bergamini and ppa class, both systems are present, the 127/64 at the bow and the 76/62 at the stern. the 127/64lw can also fire the subcalibrated 155mm ammunition. obviously a missile can carry more war payload, the ammunition being smaller it carries less, but you can always fire more ammunition on the same target to even the score. then being smaller, they take up less space on the ship and can be transported in large quantities. hoping the enemy doesn't hit you with a missile right in the ammunition depot, in which case I believe the bang will transport the crew to the moon

Italian ships don't need big guns, they just need to be able to go full speed astern!

Hey I think I saw at least two clips from the class I served on. Even though I was just the IT guy I used to fire that thing a few times. And refilling the ammo storage by hand really hurts your back xD
