Thanks for a great video. This continues to be the best technical watercolor series out there! I love this color so much. I've tried cobalt teals from Daniel Smith via a dot card, Qor, Mission Gold, and Winsor & Newton, and Qor is by far my favorite for vibrancy. I did not find that Winsor & Newton was comparable to the extent that it appears to be in your swatches--perhaps I had the wrong color name or a dull batch. Cobalt teal is the only Qor color in my everyday palette and I use it mainly for accents and in mixes where I want the colors to separate like a Daniel Smith specialty color. It makes an amazing green with quin gold, or a lovely neutral that separates in puddles much like Shadow Violet.

I have Daniel smith cobalt teal. Love the granulation. As far as pigment separated from the binder, it can happen to any tube. I shake my tubes vigorously for a bit before opening them.

I definitely like the M Graham the best. This series is really phenomenal I feel like we really get to know the colors and the different brands.

These videos are so helpful for deciding what to buy. I knew I wanted a Cobalt Turquoise, but I've recently been thinking maybe just buying everything from Schmincke (I'm german, so they're easily accessible) isn't the way. I chose Winsor & Newton now, especially because it's the most yellow tinted. Exactly what I was looking for with the color! Thanks for your work ♥

I do have this color in Winsor & Newton professional. I love this color and have been using it quite a lot lately. I'm in the US and looked on Dick Blick and Jackson's for prices. Blick was less than Jackson and came in at $1.09 USD per ML for the 14ML tube and $1.47 USD per ML for the 5ML tube. This color is totally brightening up my background...

Recently got a Cass art watercolour 12 tube set. The Cerulean had horrific binder split too, again more binder than paint. Ended up with half a tube of binder before I got any paint out of the tube that I could paint with. I almost think that the split had occurred prior to the tube filling, which would explain why I had so little useable paint in the tube.

I was just playing with my Cobalt Teals this morning! Too funny! Specifically the M. Graham, which I just got, versus the Daniel Smith which I've had for some time. Not a huge difference in mine, but enough that I noticed. Love this and thank you for the comparison chart. Amazing! :)

I'm a bit of a cheapskate, always looking on ebay for stock clearance and pre owned watercolour ...So binder separation is something that come with the territory. As soon as I spot any separation, I use an old hat pin - "minus the bead" to stir it up. I find pumping the flat head of the pin up and down inside the tube re mixes the paint quite well. I pinch a bit of tissue around the pin and tube top to stop any paint squirting out.

My Daniel Smith cobalt teal had a lot of binder split. I was able to mix it back in with a toothpick after I poured it into the pan. I think like you said it's just a characteristic of cobalt colors

Thanks Oto. The Daniel Smith cobalt blue that I have is also difficult to rewet. It is the only Daniel Smith color I have. I have the QOR but hardly ever use it as I like to glaze and it lifts so easily. Take care. 😁💙

hi there :) i have a few sennelier paints and i know some dry well (ultramarine deep, burnt sienna, helios purple) and some stay extremely sticky (french vermilion). may i ask, from your experience with the sennelier turquoise green PG50, how well does it dry in half pans? does it stay very sticky or does it dry to a matte finish/crack?

@@PaintinHiding Sennelier paints are made with honey, as M. Graham and a few other brands are. It takes them longer to dry but it also means they respond immediately to a wet brush. I love the Sennelier turquiose green.

@paintinhiding sorry to intrude in the conversation, but did you ever try putting your Sennelier pans in the fridge? A Philippine fellow artist gave this advice and I already used it with my honey based paints.

Thank you for this really informative comparison. As an information for all the cobalt teal lovers out there, the pigments of two brands have changed. Lukas now uses PB28 and Mission Gold uses also PB28 - at least according to my dot card with pigment information. I bought it in 2022.

i recently got the White Nights version of this in tube form, Cobalt Turquoise PB28. it didn't have binder split but maybe because it's a new paint tube? i don't know. my sennelier turquoise green PG50 had binder split as well. i'd say the white nights one is very similar to the sennelier one. a tiiiiiiiiiny bit duller in my eyes but if you're not comparing them side by side, it's practically indistinguishable. also, i found the white nights version less "streaky" than the sennelier one on application.

I like a lot many of their colours..the basic single pigments ones are a staple...cheaper but very good for money..

This is a great video. This shade is one of my favourites and I have it on every palette. Just wanted to mention that I recently bought a Mission Gold pure pigment set and it came with Cobalt Turquoise and it was single pigment PB28. So it may be that they changed their formula. You may want to see if you can get a sample of that to see if it performs the same.

i dont have this colour but i do use SAA Artists Watercolour Paint - Tropical Phthalo Blue (PB15:1)..... ill look out for this the next time i am shopping for paints, thanks for the video

Cobalt teal is a color I didn't know I needed in my life until Arleebean gave me a little tin with some from MGraham in it and I am SO ON BOARD. Gosh. It's such a pretty color, and that granulation? Mmmm hmm, honeyyyyyyy, it was such a nice surprise! I feel like the only thing I'd heard about this color before actually trying it was that it's a brick that's impossible to rewet but given that the only one I have experience with is the ridiculously easy to rewet M. Graham? Pft. I have no problems or complaints. Right now, I have it in a trio with scarlet pyrrol and bismuth yellow and it's a surprisingly great trio!

I love this color so I have some of the brands you use here. I think there might be a confusión with two Mission Gold colors: I have a Cobalt Turquoise made with pigment PB28 and I also have the Turquoise Blue which is made with the combination of pigments mentioned here: PG7, PB15.3 and PW6, so maybe it’s about the color name. I have a question, please. . . (First off - I love your channel and videos. I am newer to them and love exploring color and pigments this way. Thank you!) Now to the question: I have the Mission Gold Single Pigment 34 set. I was fortunate to get it when I began with watercolors a few years ago. It was recommended by a wonderful mentor and teacher and I felt that learning mixing with single pigments would simplify things for me and help me understand theory better. It has been a great decision. However, in my set (and I went to see you swatch out your 24 color single-pigment set) my Cobalt Turquoise is PB28. The Mission Gold color for the video here has multi-pigments. Why is that? You have a vast library and I did try to search the answer before asking you. But I am curious. I know the MG naming system is faulty regarding traditional names for colors (such as PG7). But I am wondering if there are two Cobalt Blues from them or if they changed to a multi-pigment color, or vise-versa. I had thought I heard that some of the paints were reformulated years ago to increast the lightfast properties. Thank you for your time.

Love this hue. I have QOR and Sennelier ones and QOR's slight green shift looks beautiful on its own and in mixes. I agree with your Schmincke comment - their paints just glide effortlessly on paper and when poured in pans. They're softer but need less coaxing than Daniel Smith in my experience. DS paints just hate plastic pans for some reason, always get air gaps after a few months and are *really* hard on the brushes. If Schmincke had the versatile pigment selection of DS I'd just go with them for paint consistency.

@@PaintinHiding Hey. It dries more like Ultramarine Deep, not runny, does not crack and even after months unused in a palette in dry climate it looks great. I genuinely think Sennelier's French Vermilion is like an exception to how runny their paints are. Both the turquoise and Cobalt Green (greener darker hue) dry well, just need some time to set.

@@PaintinHiding thanks so much! Happy painting! I do want to make a disclaimer that I live in a dry city so maybe paints dry quicker and firmer here, haven't checked how they work in humid places. French Vermilion is just a very runny pigment in general, as are most Cobalts, but these turquoises seem fine ^_^ Plus, they're gorgeous. Your comment actually made me want to paint with them now :D Thanks!

PG50 is the genuine cobalt teal for me, i'm not sure about the composition of those PB28 variants.

Me too, it was in the Pure Pigment set. I can't find any mention of this mixture on their site, but wasn't sure if some countries get a different product in the cheaper sets.

Me too, and it is such a lovely color and behaves so well, and is easy to rewet. Also purchased in the pure pigment set. Although, I’ve also seen individual tubes of the single pigment version available on eBay for decent prices.

I just bought the Daniel Smith version and when I swatched it at home, it is much greener than I anticipated/wanted. I am looking for a brighter, bluer teal. Kind of like a bright, true Cyan color. Does anyone have any recommendations? All of these colors appear just a little too green for me. I guess I will continue the search. I know I seem picky but I just really want this color! lol

I hate my Mission Gold watercolors. They are one step sheerer than a gouache. I bought a large set to use/practice when my painting wasn't Daniel Smith "worthy". What makes watercolors so beautiful is the luminosity and translucent qualities, IMHO.

But Qor goes so much farthar than other brands , its my favorite color and the 5ml tube dried down just goes and goes, my sennelier seemed to want to dry down and crack in the pan and i had to use a larger amount to get the same payoff, i find that to be the case for all of qor watercolors. I believe they say its because of the aquazal binder ,its a higher pigment to binder ratio.

just a note on DA VINCI - my 1st cobalt teal, *gorgeous* intense turquoise, smooth, a terriffic blender, and a fav on the palette in lieu of blue. BUT..... in my travel palette, it wanders. (like the half pan of it blarrrrged all over my other colors. TWICE.). IN SHORT: excellent in the studio, not a good traveller.
