I know this video is older.... but I was asked to put my 2 cents in lol. Cobalt colors ( unfortunately) are my absolute favorite pigments. As a professional artist and Bookbinder I find them irreplaceable for gorgeous colors, excellent lightfastness, granulation, strength and for making my own watercolors. When you make watercolors, yes the cobalt are the most exspensive... but that tells you they are invaluable. They are a dream to make paints with, they are easy to mull and " the cobalt pigment just wants to be paint " - Arleebean. Now I said unfortunately because I know they can be hard on the environment.... so like you said, I take part... but I do my part on making sure everything is disposed of properly, safely and correctly. Hope everyone is having a lovely day 😊

I live for the moments when you mix colors with other colors. I'm addicted to this. Some people like asmr, I like watching color mixing... not on a chart but like in this video, in a row, little lines creating this beautiful transition from one color to the other. SO satisfying! I love that part of these videos :D

Hope you're feeling better, Denise! I've been waiting for this particular episode of Color Spotlight and I'm so excited when I saw the YT notification for this video. 😁 Cobalt Teal is (and will always be) my number one favourite colour in the whole world and it's an indispensable colour for me. I paint a lot of seascapes & landscapes and I always find myself reaching for this colour. It's lovely by itself or when mixed with other colours (the granulation is just 💙💚). Anyway, loving the vipercorn! 🐍 I imagine that he has the power to know our dreams & desires and be able to 'nudge' us a bit, help us set our mind, and guide us on what to do to achieve those dreams. 😀🌈

Thanks so much! I'm so glad it was friendly enough for you. There are some snakes that we definitely have to respect and keep a wide distance from given their toxins, but many of them are harmless and so, so helpful. Here in California at least, we only have one venomous species (rattlesnakes) and all the others are phenomenal at keeping rodent and other small animals in check - definitely a critter that should be welcomed around the home and garden in many cases :)

I too had never heard of these ethical issues, which are quite distressing, though I knew mineral extraction of all sorts is being aggressively pursued with a lot of disregard for people, animals and environment. I wonder how many of our other pigment also have issues simply from the raw material that we do not know of and which may not be related to toxicity.... I have two versions of Cobalt teal, Lukas 1864 and Kremer which are quite different but both lovely. As I have them now I will respect them and try and use them responsibly, I am not sure if we can avoid all issues, I think artists of the past we much less informed but some knew about toxicity and continued to make anyway. We are fortunate, we have an overabundance of choice. The Lukas version at first seems very opaque but once dry on the palette performs more as you would expect. The Kremer is similar in hue to the DS. I am intrigued by both and they make great mixes. I love the Kremer especially as it is the exact colour of the underside of a tropical wave in the afternoon sun! And no other blue really comes close..... Your vipercorn is great, I like these whimsical creatures and it is lovely to see your process. Thanks for the great mixes too, it always amazes me how many variations our lovely paintboxes will give when we really use them well. And thanks for keeping me learning, it really is such a gift.....

Do you have thoughts on how artists should responsibly dispose of paint water? I'd be interested in hearing about any tools or methods that lessen the impact on our water supply/environment.
@InLiquidColor6 жыл бұрын
This is more for house paint, but there's a water based section:ecopainting.ca/eco-painting/environmental-tips/disposing-paint-waste/ I let my pigments settle before pouring out the water when possible, pouring off the water and then removing the pigments as solid waste with a small paper towel.

I wish there was a good synthetic or plant based turquoise substitutes for this. I love the hue and it's the only cobalt in my palette, but I haven't used it much yet. I haven't anything that looks quite like this yet, but would love, too. If only teal were more en vogue, then maybe the pigment suppliers would try to find something good to substitute it 🤔

The vipercorn is very cute, and I believe his magical power is that instead of spitting venom, he spits a magic gas that grants wishes and hearts desires. BTW, which version did you think was the most transparent? Neither one that I have is, and in spite of the staining, I may just mix some Phthalo turquoise when I run out of what I have. Appreciate all the research you put into these spotlights!

I’m with ya! Cobalt teal is just a color I can’t do without. My question is, if you have to dispose of it carefully, which I understand why, how does one do so? I could put it in one of those plastic jars for oil that they recommend at recycling centers, but then they wouldn’t be able to recycle it with cobalt in it I don’t believe. I could, once the bottle is full, trash it but that would be me not recycling the plastic. Any suggestions? Love the painting, I think you did great as an illustrative painter in your other video, and even though you weren’t trying, here!

I don't have a *great* solution to offer. What I do is I let the cobalts settle (they're heavy), I pour off the water, then I wipe out the solids with a paper towel and dispose. It's not a lot better, but at least doesn't end up in our water supply immediately.
@peaceandpaintbrushes6 жыл бұрын

@abbystevens56936 жыл бұрын
For differnce in color if same pigment is used for 2 different colors: the color differs due to the amount of effort taken to make the pigment particles smaller on the process. The smaller ot gets the more different the color will be. And I think also the color can be different deoending on other stuff added to the pigment ( stuff like fillers and bindingagients etc. etc.)
@InLiquidColor6 жыл бұрын
The chemical compounds themselves can also affect colors sharing a pigment index code.

I a bit conflicted. I’ve always avoided toxic pigments because I care a great deal about my health and am frankly a bit of a hypochondriac. Im also not very responsible with taking extra efforts to avoid exposure to myself and the environment, so I’ve always used exclusively non-toxic pigments. As I read more about cobalts, I realized that in watercolor they are pretty low on the hazard concern list (cadmium is worse) considering the primary health hazard is breathing in powder dust or ingestion. But, considering that in order to safely dispose of cobalts for environmental concerns you must collect the the powder residue, im back to wondering if it’s worth it. I received a small sample of cobalt teal on a dot card and fell in love with the hue (hence my growing research on the topic) and now I don’t know what to do. I want it, but in order to reduce the environmental impact I worry that i would be risking respiratory exposure.

Also I'm probably gonna invest in a schmincke set and I also want to know more about the toxicity.

Thanks Kath. The reason I outlined it was because the painting was not going how I wanted or envisioned it. I just wanted to mention that when you see HUE in the name of a paint color, this shows a comparable color based on the "original" mixture without the use of heavy metals and carcinogenic ingredients. Cobalt is one of those materials that can be eliminated in paint and other applications as well. Still nice to hear from you Denise. I hope your doing well.

Vipercorns are vegan and their special power is to locate their main food source of champaroogn fungus. They use their horn to gently pry it from between the roots of the silver rowan tree.

Hi Denise, love the new Spotlight series, it's very very helpful ^_^ Is the M.Graham Cobalt Teal you are using very runny? I know it doesn't dry fully, but I've read people describing M.Graham Cobalts being particularly runny. Also, don't know if you've tried Schmincke version of this pigment - how does it compare in hue and granulation?

Ana Markozashvili mine levels out in my pallet over a few hours when I squeeze it out fresh from the tube, but it still dries enough to travel without issue.

Same as what Ashly said regarding consistency. I only have the tiniest sample of Schminckes so I can't make a full assessment but from what I've seen it's lovely.

Oh, great! I just love M.Graham's version, but want to put on my travel palette for seaside trips and was worried about that ^_^ Will keep in mind, thank you.

I had a problem with mine this week. Even being in my palette for over 2 months it did not dried fully. Maybe environmental conditions play a role on this?
@anam000906 жыл бұрын
N Monteiro Yeah I think it never settles down in a more humid climate. I don't live in a humid place but am planning to travel to one, so not sure what I'll get. Probably Schmincke, as it sets and rewets well.

Oh my gosh, such a cute derpy vipercorn! Whatever his power is, I imagine he's a little bumbling in how he goes about using it.

I'm pretty sure the MINOR amount of cobalt you are spilling down the drain in your water is a speck of sand on the beach compared to the mining of cobalt and other MUCH more environmentally damaging things going on in heavy metal extraction... while I applaud you thinking about it - I'd say spilling out cadmium or cobalt paint water is about as harmful to the environment as driving your car down the block.

If we all have that opinion, it adds up. I do everything I can to reduce my impact on the environment from little things like this, to which products I buy, to how much plastic I use, and how I vote.

Good for you and it is a fine example for the rest of us! I try to do things that drive as much impact as possible.. like avoiding factory farmed meat (which produces more greenhouse-gas emissions than anything else on the planet!) and driving gas efficient cars... but painting with cobalt watercolors - I think that one I can live with.

First things first, I actually don’t use cobalts, but not because I care about the toxicity, but because, I agree, I really don’t miss cobalt colors, I use PG7 and PB15‘s and they give me ... the same! I do occasionally use cobalt teal, I have one on my pallet.... but while I usually love granulation, I personally don’t really like the one my PG50 gives me... but yeah, for some things it’s an absolutely wonderful color to work with!

Native Americans call lying 'speaking with a forked tongue'. So since snakes have a forked tongue, maybe the uni-viper's superpower is lie detecting. She'd make millions on the paternity talk show circuit!! Lol Maybe Jerry Springer or Maury Povich would fight to hire her full time! Lol♀️♂️♀️♂️
