The Night is Short, Walk on Girl (Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome) is a movie about contrast, with Otome serving as the foil to... well everyone. One of the reviews on MAL describes this movie as “a beautiful mess”, and I couldn’t agree more. It’s a smattering of drama, comedy, and romance; that are balanced precariously but just… work. It is a reimagining of the college experience, and that awkward time between teenager and adult. I'd like to just point out some things in general I noticed about the film, but mostly I just want more people talking about it! It certainly deserves it.

God I loved this film. Such a shame it is flying under the radar.

This night is impossibly long because she is experiencing young adulthood with bright eyes. As you grow older, almost every new experience is just a variant of a stored memory. You can't smell something new for the first time twice.

Just finished watching it and only thing that came out of my mouth is nothing. I was speechless. This by far Masaki Yuasa's best work. The fact that almost no body watched it is a damn shame.

Dude thanks to you I ended up checking this movie out! I’m so surprised it slipped past me because Tatami Galaxy is one of my all-time favorites! This even seemingly takes place in the same college! It was awesome and I loved every second of it. So thank you! 🙏 The message of this movie feels kind of like the entirety Tatami Galaxy condensed into a movie. Everyone outside Otome seems too concerned with either the future or the past and fails to enjoy the rose colored campus life as a result. Otome serves as a foil to both everyone else in this movie and to the protagonist of Tatami. But I do find it interesting that in this movie Otome’s outlook seems to have consequence for her as well. She constantly lives in the moment, but because she doesn’t dwell on anything like the others do it doesn’t allow her to develop very deep connections to anyone. Every character comes in and out of her life at breakneck pace and it’s a great time while they are there but once they are gone they are just as quickly forgotten (not in the sense that she doesn’t remember them but in the sense that she doesn’t miss or long or think about any of them).....I literally just finished watching it so I haven’t really mulled this movie over thoroughly yet but these are just some thoughts I had after watching. Thanks again for bringing this excellent movie to my attention!

Has anyone else noticed the fact that Senpai's room is a 4 and a half tatamis room? Tatami Galaxy's chapter 9 has Watashi trapped in an interdimensional portal, and he goes through a lot of 4 and a half tatamis rooms, those were all different dimensions. Wouldn't be weird if Otome and Senpai are just alternate Watashi and Akashi, since a lot of Tatami Galaxy characters and other Yuasa films appear on the movie as well. Anyways great video!

Thank you for making a video about this movie. It is truly a masterpiece and deserves more attention. I like the concepts you pointed out, I didn't even notice some of these when I watched it but completely agree with you and adore it all the more for that.

I agree with your analysis, but I think a lot of people missed the slight sarcasm in it's message. The sophists dance, and the message in the musical where Don underwear just blatantly says love is about opportunism. This series a lot of fascinating and nuanced dialogue that just flyby so fast that you're left wondering if you should be questioning the characters action in the first place.

I cannot understand how people can praise something that gives them a sense of false hope. There’s one scene in this film that hits me very hard, where we observe senpai’s thoughts and feelings visualized in a courtroom. I’ve been struggling with depression ever since this pandemic hit and I’ve undergone a number of breakups; few as they were affected me severely. Whereas senpai manages to win her heart in one night, I attempted to cut my arm purposefully a few nights ago because that’s how hopeless I feel the situation to be. Sometimes I still feel that way, and I turn to alcohol to drown out my loneliness. All I want in the end is someone I can cherish, hold close, and share this life of mine with, explore the great outdoors and settle down in a small log cabin in the Rocky Mountains to raise a family. But sometimes I feel like I’m asking too much. The film said, “Waiting hurts, and being waited upon hurts. But those who are alone must act.” I’ve tried many times only to have my heartbroken. I’ve lost how many girls I’ve given my number to in College. Senpai has no fucking clue how lucky he is. All the shenanigans, the magic moments, the confessions, they’re bullshit, unreal. They’ll never happen to me. Sometimes I feel like my heart is so broken, it’ll implode. I need help.
