Hi Andrea, So glad I came across your video. At the age of 45 I just had this procedure done to my left ear. I started suffering from hearing loss in my early 30s. I went thru slight depression and withdrawal in the beginning because I tried to avoid Negative energy. I can truly relate to your story and so happy that you got help at an early age. I can't wait for the doctor to take out packing, i know it's going to be a tearful experience. Much 💛 Tanya

@Birboot My hearing improved more than 50% in both ears and now almost have normal hearing decimal range without hearing devices. It is some getting used to because everything is louder so you have to adjust. My advice is to find ENT doctor that you feel comfortable also confirming your diagnosis with MRI. That is what made me feel okay and he was recommended. I hope this helps. Note my second suegery was done about 6mos apart from 1st one. 🙏

I'm so glad you made this video. I wondered what the post-op would be like, so having your testimonial is wonderful. I found myself nodding the whole way through your description of what it's like pre-surgery. Did everyone get some insidious global memo and decide to start mumbling?? Even though I don't read lips or anything like that, the worst is when you're talking to someone, and they nonchalantly turn around for some reason as they're talking. They lost me right then and there! I was diagnosed with otosclerosis last month. When I found out this was actually treatable, I was ecstatic! I thought I was going to have to live the rest of my life without hearing well or dependent on hearing aids. I'm going to do the surgery in July (after some summer travel). I hope you post follow-up videos to show how things are going or after your second surgery.

I though the same thing that I was going to have to have hearing aids for the rest of my life but thankfully not now! I will say I’m somewhat glad this happened to me because I have a better understanding of how important it is to make eye constant with people that you’re talking to and I feel more confident speaking to strangers now because I can hear or speaking in a group of people. Love love love that this helped you and it’s only up from here for you!!

There is so much to your story I can relate to, it's remarkable. I was literally diagnosed yesterday after ten years of putting up with it as best I could. Initially a doctor actually went in and operated because I had broken my nose with very severe facial trauma a year prior and he felt that the impact had probably dislodged the middle ear bones and he could set things straight. The operation however was not very successful, probably because he was not going in looking to fix otosclerosis, thinking it was something else. For the first 6-7 years it was manageable. Audiologists had only ever said that I had a hearing loss, & therefore needed hearing aids. My response was 'I can't afford them', & I never pressed anyone further for any more information, like why I was going deaf in the first place. I just assumed I had listened to music too loud when younger or that my facial injury had done permanent damage to my ear. Three years ago, the tinnitus started, and things started to get really bad. I noticed that what was previously a problem with one ear was now affecting both, and now any sound coming in had to be loud enough to get over the ringing in my ears as well. I have to watch telly with subtitles. Music at full volume, etc. I agree also that people sadly have little patience for you when you are deaf, so I have withdrawn a lot more socially, & work is becoming a struggle. I will be contacted soon by a doctor who will hopefully operate, it encourages me greatly to hear how surgery made a massive difference to you. Thanks for your video.

Mona Roofi so this morning was the 6th day so far I still have ringing in my ear but but last night was the first time I slept a full night since the surgery the ringing doesn’t seem as bad I still have the inner packing gel foam they called it. Didn’t have a fat patch done. I could hear with a hearing aid. I feel it’s the same or worse. I’m hoping that the inner packing is what is causing the prob with hearing I will find out tomorrow when I see the doctor.
@chrisrifflard60784 жыл бұрын
Mona Roofi so I was told that though I have high pitched hearing loss in both ears my left ear also had conductive hearing loss. I got a hearing aid and it helped. But with Covid and people wearing masks (can’t see their mouths to read lips and pulling off my hearing aid with the straps of the mask) I went in to the surgery with high hopes of 90% success. Absolutely no pain, yes gave me antibiotics to take for 5 days. The ringing in my ear started the second day and has not left yet. As I’m writing to you I am trying to figure if it’s the same and I’m getting use to it or if it is less but what is difference is that it is constant. If you need both ears done I would only do one at the time. I’m hoping my story isn’t done I’m hoping once I have the packing out things will change. I will keep you up dated if you have any questions I will continue to answer and let you know. I did loose taste or rather it turned into a metallic taste just on the left side if my tongue I understand that my dr didn’t use a nerve monitor. I only realized that while they were in the OR and the anesthesiologists asked about what she can give me. They say that resolves eventually And i needed to loose a couple of pounds anyway. I’ll let you know what happens tomorrow after the appt. oh and yes I have dizziness but it’s getting better and it was only when I walked down stairs. (That would be fun)
@chrisrifflard60784 жыл бұрын
Mona Roofi the ringing got a little better this morning. I thought he was going to take the packing out but he has given me antibiotic drops that will slowly dissolve the the packing called gel foam. I go back again in one month if not all gone he will take it out. He made it clear to me that he pulled the nerve to my tongue over, he said when he did his residency he was paired with a doctor that routinely cut the nerve and he said it’s easily seen and can be pulled out of the way and that’s how he does his surgery. Once the swelling goes down the nerve should fix itself. He also made it clear the because of the packing in my ear I have ear canal of dead space were sound can’t travel. He is not surprise I can’t hear yet. He had the audiologist test my conductive hearing while I was there and I still have it so nothing bad has happed to my hearing. I’m a little dizzy yet he said that is my sign I’m over doing it. I oringinal it was talking off 1 week from work he extended it another 3 days.

I first began noticing hearing loss during my early 30s - around 2006. I finally went to an ENT in 2014 and was diagnosed with otosclerosis. I use Oticon hearing aids (which cost me $7200). I tried many other hearing aids including Phonak - but, the other hearing aids didn't work for music. Pretty much I have to wear my hearing aids to hear people talking to me. I know the operation is typically very successful - but, I'm *really* sensitive to sound - so I don't want the operation (basically I'm worried I will not like the outcome).

I hear this! I didn't know I had Otosclerosis and was just told I had a reverse slope hearing loss. My insurance (it was a new insurance provider) told me I had to go see someone else, so I went to another audiologist where they told me that legally he wouldn't put me in hearing aids because in the state of Colorado, it's illegal without first trying to address the underlying medical condition. I had NO idea what he was talking about. He then told me all about Otosclerosis and told me to see my ENT. My surgery is now scheduled for mid January. I don't want to eventually lose my hearing, so I figured that surgery was the way better option. Plus, it's mentally exhausting constantly explaining to people that I legitimately can't hear at the age of 35 and asking people to repeat themselves. Or going to comedy shows or other events and pretending like I can hear when I can't. Jump in with both feet and don't be afraid to ask questions. You can do this.

Now I have had 2 days in row whistle shuiss sound on my operated ear. They sayed that operation was success, so Ill give it time to heal. No unexpected pain in the ear, that is big suprise, have not even taken painkillers. So I think the recovery is individual and different for everyone.

Hello. I had my stapedectomy about a month ago. My hearing has been hugely improved since then and continues improving. But I have also been experiencing tinnitus the last few weeks. I'm hoping it is just part of the healing process or the gelfoam dissolving and will go away with time.
@techidna-h9t2 жыл бұрын
@@imail724 sorry to hear about your tinnitus. It would alarming if you never had it before. I had tinnitus prior to surgery and quite severely for the first week after. I'm in my second week of recovery now and it seems better this week. Tinnitus I can cope with, however, as long as my hearing is better. The trick is to accept it and not focus on it. What I am noticing this week is that my taste has gone funny and my tongue is a bit tingly - which can be normal due to them having to go near a nerve in surgery.
@imail7242 жыл бұрын
@@techidna-h9t Thank you for the advice. I have noticed that oftentimes I "forget" about the ringing and life goes on as normal, but then I will remember it, think about it, and focus on it, and that can drive me crazy. It's good to know you get used to it over time, I'm just hopeful that it will not be permanent. But if it is, I hope the tradeoff for improved hearing was worth it.

Thanks alot for the testimonial I'm 29, and have been diagnosed with otosclerosis for almost 6 month, i had booked an appointment with the ENT consultant to finalize the surgery bookings but pandemic began and everything stopped. I decided to use this gap to think and research more into the different aspects of stapedectomy procedure and ask you guys what are the risks associated with this surgery? Have you ever experienced any hearing difficulties after the operation? Is there any kind of activity that you are totally banned from because of the elaborate implant placed in the ear? My brother had this surgery 7 years ago and in cold winter days he says he cant hear properly, and generally he's stopping me from having stapedectomy on my ears Is there any similar experience here Many thanks guys

@prathamesh bhadane it's been a month, no pain, use to my surroundings. Only trouble I have (and it's not a big issue) is there is significant vibration with loud noises in the one ear. I wonder if that is because my ear drum has not been used since birth. I suspect I lost my hearing then as there were delivery complications and I can't remember a time when I had good hearing. FYI, I had 2 broken bones according to the surgeon. No cutting, just pulled them out.

Mainichi Japanese It’s so okay to be scared. We aren’t surgeons and how do we know that they won’t mess up? It’s the same as trusting someone to cut your hair. But you HAVE to. There’s so much sound that you’re missing out on planes, the ocean, conversations with people. I shut myself out too and I think that’s pretty common. It’s awful because no one understands like you do. Everything will be pretty loud for a week after but trust me it comes way down and it’s so comfortable. It’s hard to think that you couldn’t hear before the surgery. Hands down the best decision I’ve ever made in my life thus far and you will be okay and like I said in the video you DESERVE it. Your life will become so effortless when it comes to hearing especially working in retail. It’s a game changer!

Thanks for sharing the video, it's encouraging to hear success stories about this condition. I'm curious if you noticed any symptoms besides just hearing loss. For me I've been noticing reduced hearing for several years along with pulsatory tinnitus and occasional weird clicking sounds in my ear when i yawn or move my jaw around just right. I was diagnosed with otosclerosis just last week (thankfully only on the left side) and am waiting to hear from a surgeon about what my options are. Ive been reading what i can about the operation and have seen more than a few stories of people who have done it but the implant failed in some way after a few years. Also apparently there is a risk of puncturing the cochlea during the operation and losing hearing completely in that ear. Have you had any further hearing loss in the years since you had this done? Or recent hearing tests to conform everything's working properly?

Hey Steve, it’s been over 5 years since both ear surgeries and the only think that I have even noticed is I’ll have to plug my nose and push air out every other day or so to expand my ear drums but I was a heavy smoker and for the past year or so I’ve switched to vaping. My are doctor told me I would have to do this though to inflate my ear drum because of the constant sucking I do. Other than that everything is still working wonderfully and because it was both of my ears, it’s changed my way of life significantly. Being that I was in my mid 20’s when I lost most of my hearing, it’s really helped. I know they told me probably in my mid 50’s I’ll need to get hearing aids and I’m okay with that!

Hi Andrea. I'm glad I watched your video. It's very informative. I just have few questions. How's your hearing after the surgery? I already had a surgery done and it is called tympanomastoidectomy. Before I had that surgery, I already had moderate mixed hearing loss. I was hoping it would get better after the surgery. I wouldn't have known that if I hadn't had my hearing checked. Now after that my surgery, I had my hearing tested and the result is still the same. I'm wondering if you also had series of ear infections before your surgery. I'm kind of wondering if this surgery will help me improve my hearing. I suspect I also have this. I'm looking forward to your reply. Thanks.

JZ Cruz I never had ear infections, it just over time got worse and worse. I had 50% hearing in my left ear and now I have 90% hearing. I’m not familiar with the type of surgery you had for your ears but with otosclerosis it’s a conductive hearing loss. It’s supposed to be pretty easy to identify with just a hearing test. Basically I couldn’t really hear through my ear canal (like wearing ear plugs) , but even with ear plugs, as long as the sound is loud enough you’ll be able to hear something because the vibrations of the sound are hitting the bones in your nose or the back of your skull and sending that through your ear drum. It’s really crazy and I’m not a doctor but that’s the best explanation I can give you. Hope something out there can help you, good luck!

Sometimes hearing loss is actually nice to have. Easy to get a better sleep. Easier to meditate. I have osteosclerosis since birth. I had the stapedectome on one ear at age 12, it worked wonders for my hearing. People tell me that i am a very intense person, i think they say this because i look people directly in the eyes and focus hard on eye contact and on reading lips and i speak loud right to peoples faces. Hard to describe.

Hi Andrea, its been 7 days from my surgery and im feeling a bit fustrated, i hear like i have lots of fluid still and i keep hearing bubbles popping in the ear that i had the surgery in, i aslo hear like im hearing from a speaker.. is this normal? Did you experience this too?
@andreamartin68416 жыл бұрын
Hi Noemi! You most positively still have fluid in your ear still.. It's going to continue to pop and as I'm sure you're experiencing, when you swallow it's a lot of popping at once. It is certainly annoying but it will go down. You just need to give it time to dry out and heal. Any other wound would make the same noises, they just are not in your ear canal so you don't have to listen to it all day haha! You're hearing sounds completely normal for how soon it is after surgery, everything will even out more, your body will adjust. Talk to your doctor if your really concerned though! Happy hearing!
