Great video. Nice to see this process done from start to finish. At 16:00 you put on what you call the outer hub seal gasket on to the backing plate rather than between the spindle and backing plate. Is this correct? This gasket is missing from many of the repair manual diagrams and even on the Toyota website complectations there’s a diagram of it between the spindle and dust seal but the backing plate is absent. Low range off-road place the gasket between the spindle and the backing plate (technically backing plate eliminator product). It’s shape seems more fitted to being located against the front of the spindle?
@OTRAMM
@OTRAMM 5 жыл бұрын
It goes between the backing plate and the dust seal for the hub. There's nothing for it to seal between the backing plate and spindle.
@nagual4ever
@nagual4ever 4 жыл бұрын
I put mine between the spindle and the backing plate because it has a special cut out that matches the flange on the spindle. I also saw another video showing this method as well. No gasket between the metal seal and backing plate. Thanks to Otramm for a great video.

You didn’t fuss with measuring preload on the wheel bearing. If everything is in decent condition, is the hand tight +1/8 turn a generally acceptable spec?
@OTRAMM
@OTRAMM 3 жыл бұрын
It's more of a learned feeling kind of thing. 1/8-1/4 usually lands it well. Measuring is the best though.
@f4safety
@f4safety Жыл бұрын
Hello Otramm, I just followed your video and was wondering if I need to check the wheel bearing preload again after the hub and lock dial are installed? I checked it after and the preload was like 14-16 ft lbs. before it was 6.5 to 7 ft lbs. Thank you
@OTRAMM
@OTRAMM Жыл бұрын
The hub shouldn't affect preload on the wheel bearings. It may affect the overall drag on the system though.
@f4safety
@f4safety Жыл бұрын
My preload is 12-16 after hub was put on
@OTRAMM
@OTRAMM Жыл бұрын
@@f4safety when you're measuring the rotation what you're actually measuring is drag. The hub may add more drag to the system but it can't have any effect on the bearing preload. The drag measurement for the bearing preload is the measurement that matters. The additional drag of the hub is just that, additional drag caused by the hub. It's just stacked on top of the drag that was measured in the bearings alone.

@jacksuarez919

At 14:00 you packed handfuls of grease in the knuckle around the birfield. On lowranges video they didnt pack any grease inside like you did just packed the bearings that the knuckle sits on. That being said I followed there video to a T. You think I should open up that plug and squirt grease in there with my grease gun?
@OTRAMM
@OTRAMM 4 жыл бұрын
If you didn't pack the knuckle and only the birfield you don't have near enough grease in there. You have to pack the knuckle so that the birf rides in grease. Otherwise it would just sling itself empty.

Great video. For regular maintenance, can steering knuckles can be greased with a grease gun? Are there zerk fittings on all 4 steering knuckles? If so, would Valvoline Palladium be a suitable choice to regrease original steering knuckles (that have never been reassembled)?
@OTRAMM
@OTRAMM 5 жыл бұрын
There are only two knuckles. There are fill plugs but I've never used them. If the knuckles aren't leaking and were properly filled there shouldn't be any reason to have to add.

Hey man, I’m hoping you can help me or atleast be able to direct me to the right place. I have a 100 and seems to dance around the road with a minimal steering feel at times. I have gotten alignment done on it and at times it looks straight and at times it learns a bit towards the passenger side. There isn’t any leaks in the power steering pump or fluid. What do think this could be? Thanks in advance sir!
@OTRAMM
@OTRAMM 5 жыл бұрын
Without seeing it my best guess would be steering rack bushings. Ideally you'd get the front end in the air and start shaking the tires to feel what's loose.

At about 14:00, while packing in more grease, would it not be wise to keep grease from the spindle holes? Otherwise you end up with wet torque? Normally unless specified, torque values are dry?
@OTRAMM
@OTRAMM 5 жыл бұрын
The spindle holes are open to the inside so you end up with grease hitting them from either direction. The toque is low enough that the wet to dry is probably negligible. I've spent the extra effort before trying to keep them clean but you inevitably get grease in the threads. There's always residual in the threads too unless they were scrubbed out with a strong solvent. Our parts washer will unpack bearings but still leaves grease in the threaded holes. I guess short answer is technically yes it would be best for them to be dry, but in the real world it just doesn't happen and doesn't seem to make a difference.
