As a surfer on the NorCal coast, I can testify that you can tell when an animal is “on the hunt”. I’ve had sharks surface right next to me, and I was not scared at all. But one time, a Great White came after us, and you could just tell by the way it cut the water, it was on the hunt. And blind panic.
@arizona_anime_fan
@arizona_anime_fan Жыл бұрын
yep, i can't attest to sharks, but i go fishing in northern canada a lot. you come across a lot of bears, and most of the time bears don't scare me, but there is something in the air when a bear isn't just "in the area" but on the hunt. you can just tell the difference, even if you don't see it. I was fishing at a well known fishing point, and this chill just went down my spine. and i could tell something was behind me. I could barely keep my hands from shaking, it was such a powerful sense of just.... intense... something. and without hesitation i took three step and lept into my boat. good way to break something i might add, i was lucky and didnt. and i turned my head back at the point and this evil looking grizzly just charges out of the bushes, and leaps at my boat as well, ignoring the fish i had on the stringer right there. going straight for me. it landed short because it tried a direct path to the boat, where as i went sideways to get to it. i had an oar out before you could say the word oar and had shoved the boat into deeper water, the bear just looked at the boat... i could tell it was trying to decide if it was worth the attempt, and it turned around, again, ignoring my fish on the strigger, and climbed back on land then vanished into the forrest. i left the fish and the fishing pole/tackle box right were it was, and had lunch in the middle of the lake, a few miles away. only returning 3 hours later after a little tour of the lake. it never touched the fish. to this day i'll never forget that feeling when it was stalking me. just the pure intense... intention, in the air.

@@Dirtbag-Hyena no shit, I saw that video. it's an insane one isn't it? yeah, at the time this occurred it was about 25 years ago and I definitely hadn't seen that video. I was absolutely not aware they were capable of that, else I probably would have pissed myself (it was close already, the only reason I didn't is I didn't get a good look at the bear leaping at me, I was so busy shoving away from the shore, so I more heard it hit the water then saw it); that scared the heck out of me though. what will fry your mind is the boat was a 10ft aluminum boat with a sideboard about 6" above the water, that bear could have EASILY got into the boat (well swamped/sunk it) had it really wanted to. at the time it hit the water i was about 10ft from the shore in probably 8ft of water. the only reason it was that deep is this was one of those glacial lakes in northern canada, where the shoreline is mostly just bare rock with deep water over the edge. so by leaping into the boat my momentum had shoved the boat away from short probably saving my life. had that thing been on a soft sand/mud beach i would have never got it into water deep enough to matter. and probably been bear dinner. that was a big bear too. never really appreciated how gigantic a grizzly is till i saw that one up close and personal. big f-ing animal.

I saw a video one time where a penguin jumped on a tourist boat. There was a whole pod of orcas circling that boat for probably a good hour before they finally left and the penguin felt safe enough to go. Also, the boat can't move while the orcas are there because they could get injured. So they just hung out until it was safe. It was hilarious and cute the way the penguin just hung out in the boat like "these are my people, they'll protect me."

Orcas learn to hunt from their mothers and they have extremely strong cultural traditions when it comes to hunting. There's been no record of orcas ever intentionally hunting humans, throughout all human history that we know of. It's possible to speculate endlessly as to why that is, but unless we figure out how to translate orca squeals to English and vice versa, we won't ever really know.

Transient orcas live in the artic water near Alaska, so it is possible humans don't swim there due to the icy cold waters and thus orcas don't hunt as due not having enough interactions for orcas to learn us to be food. Good job on your part for not interfering. As of the boat, this is how I see it: we are a part of nature and so are the things we create. The moment we decided to put boats on the water, it's fair game. The otter made a clutch call and it paid off; good on him/her.

They aren't that little and they have an extremely nasty bite. Teach are designed to hold fish and crush shells. Getting one off a boat (if it doesn't want to go) would be extremely difficult. It's scared and the last thing anyone used to the water would do is try to get one off your boat. Just stay calm and let them get back into the water when the coast is clear. We have them on our dock from time to time -- usually eating. The usually head off when people come down, but if they aren't in a good mood, they'll hiss the heck out of you. One bite (even superficial) is a heck of a lot of rabies shots. They'll maul a small dog, no problem and even larger dogs can take massive damage and vet bills. Most animals leave them to heck alone for a reason.
