【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

Tororo has learned to be food aggressive because of Otsuyu and Odashi also having food aggression. Kotaro and Hana have never had food insecurity.

Hana has met her match as food hog. Hahah! Little Tororo just goes for it and not shy. If someone has a problem, he just lets himself be sniffed. Happy go lucky guy. Hana & Kotaro sees Tororo as he is…a kid. Kotaro gets along with dude otters that are his equal, like Aty-ty.

In case you haven't noticed in Loutre's videos, Tororo is very defensive about his food, as if he never had enough of it - sorta like Hana in that aspect.

Odashi and Otsuyu would snatch his food when he was a baby and ate really slow due to barely having any teeth lol, I guess he's learned that from his moms.

Tororo copied the Hana-saurus sounds down pact. That communication and others were learned so quickly just in a day. Wow. Whoa. Wild. Then the Fun soccer ball is the perfect size for otters to scoot around with as well. I think Tororo learned the smells of Hanna and Kotaro by sniffing and drinking slowly from their bowls before they woke up to greet each other; I think spending time looking around and getting used to the layout and scents helped to learn who Tororo would eventually meet later that day and is what made the day go so well too. Good Job loving Humans for planning ahead like that. I guess that was planned anyways. haha.

Hana appears to have been the only one setting boundaries for Tororo. Kotaro just hangs back and lets him do whatever he wants. This is why it is so important to socialize children with many people. Hana was very gently teaching Tororo very important lessons when meeting new otters.

I love this video! I'm glad Tororo got to meet Kotaro and Hana. I love Tororo's tail swat to defend his food from Hana. Tororo is just a friendly otter and wants to hang out with Hana and Tororo but doesn't want to share food! Tororo is the only otter his age at Loutre so he is used to being with adult otters and knows how to stand up for himself with adults! I want to see more collaboration with Tororo, Kotaro, and Hana in the future! A nature walk or swimming in a river would be nice when the weather is better!

Tororo has food aggression like Odashi, which is why he fights others for food even though everyone is food secure. Unlike the well-socialized Oage who responds with discipline to poor behavior, Kotaro and Hana don't frequently meet other otters to know what Tororo is doing is unacceptable. This was a very valuable experience for all three otters.
