Following on from the success of her Man Booker Prize-nominated novel, Eileen, Ottessa Moshfegh spoke to us about My Year of Rest and Relaxation - a couriously affecting tale of a woman who wants to medicate herself to sleep for a whole year. Where did this unique idea come from?

The best entry point to get into Ottessa-san's books. You will end up reading all of them, if you love this one. Cheers.

The book is hilarious. And profound in an intuitive way.

I ordered this book right after I finished Eileen, her writing is surprisingly comforting despite the gritty setting and plot of the novel.

Sorry about that, I thought I was only talking about things that are mentioned on the back of the book rather than anything revealed inside (although I appreciate some readers even avoid the blurb).

No need to apologise, the last thing I'd want to do is ruin anyone's enjoyment of a book by spoiling anything! Anyway, great to hear you've got the book, do please come back and tell me how you get on.

I loathe the reactions of people who describe it as funny or comedic. there are some funny parts but if this book didn’t fuck with your self and your brains, consider yourself lucky. it’s is one of the best accounts of true horrid depression and or mental illness. good for you you didnt reaaaally pick that up.

The worst book I've ever read. The author is just as insufferable as the main character. Not a single thing about her is likable. Not one thing.
