When turning the light on and off, is it necessary to cycle through all 3 brightness levels, or are the 3 brightness levels controlled by a separate control that remembers the level?

No it is not necessary. All you have to do is just tap the power button to shut that light on and off.

I want to use this as a bedside lamp but the clock display is so bright especially in a dark room and it’s hard to sleep with it on but I also want it on as an easy way to tell the time in the middle of the night. Is there a way to dim the clock display?

There is a way to dim it just tap the S button. but it does not go dim enough it’s still too bright

Look at the bottom base it’s white, in the middle of that base you’ll see a Astrik it’s very difficult to see just tap that with your finger.

The battery is for the time back up. If you lose power you do not have to set the time again.
