Being sent to the Russian court in the 19th century was the political equivalent of being "kicked upstairs" in 21st century corporate lingo- a way to get bothersome yet important people out of the spotlight with dignity. President Andrew Jackson sent future President James Buchanan to St. Petersburg for this reason, telling cabinet members "If the US posted an embassy at the North Pole, I would have sent him there instead".

I love this phrase "iron and blood" as gloomy as it is, it describes the second half of the 19th century perfectly, and even gives a peak at what would come in the new century.... There is a reason, why Bismark is still held in pretty high regards in Germany today, even tough most parts were by no means prussian. For James' inevitable lies video: That poland at 6:36 looks a little anachronistic and I think it might be valuable to clear up what a "prince" in the HRE is

Moreover, the narrator does a wonderful job of juxtaposing his obvious excitement regarding the content, and a non-biased platform to present the information. I have started to re-watch all the videos! I am currently at World War I: Part 1, where at 6:20 you regard the significance of Otto Von Bismark, and how he deserves an entire video series for himself. Three years later, you've done precisely that. Well done! Keep it coming! :P

Its just so relaxing after studying for the entire week (or entire day). The moment the intro music starts I can sit back and I know I have couple of minutes just for myself to enjoy some extraordinary tale from history.

You really "get" Otto von Bismarck. I wonder if you'll do something on the larger Prussian-American connection. "Baron von Steuben and the American Army" "Blackjack Pershing, the secret Junker" "National Guard, half-century after the Prussian Landwher" On the civilian side, there's modern public ed and the social provisions you mentioned earlier.

Bismark is my favorite chancellor of Germany. He made a new German Reich, defeated his enemies with an amazing military technique called "Blitzkreig" and is quoted of saying "We'll keep beating on the Poles until they despise of living."

before this series I was fascinated by Bismark. I saw him as a brutal and efficient leader that would stop at nothing to achieve his ends. With that perspective, this series, which examines his actions on a microlevel I was previously unable to view, Bismark has become even more fascinating to me.
