📜 History of Otto von Bismarck, Part 4
Bismarck turned up the heat on his long-term plan to unite the German Confederation under Prussian leadership. He allied with Austria to seize a piece of disputed land, then maneuvered them into a war that he decisively won. Even an assassination attempt could not stop him.

Fun fact, Bismarck never actually checked the revolver after his friend bought it for him at the police auction after the assassination attempt...and no one realized that the sixth round was still in the gun, unfired. That is, until eight years later, when a party was held at Bismarck's estate, and a certain Herr von Unrun Bomst picked up the gun in Bismarck's study. He managed to inadvertently work the action in his recklessness, and in doing so shot the infamously overweight Parliamentarian Jordan Deidesheim in the stomach, coming very close to assassinating him by accident.

This may also explain how the man can be shot five times at pointblank range and have the bullets BOUNCE OFF HIS RIBS! "Your Puny Weapons Cannot Harm Me! Bismark was told by the Kaiser himself: "It was not easy being a King/Kaiser under you!" And his treaties kept Europe peaceful for some time. The Austrian War was also the prime example of Moltke's tactic: "Getrennt marschieren, vereint schlagen!" - "march seperately, attack jointly"

Liechtenstein had been the County of Vaduz in earlier centuries, when it was acquired by the Liechtenstein family because they wanted to own lands that had imperial immediacy (which basically meant they were only subject to the Holy Roman Empire, not to anyone else), and Vaduz just so happened to have that. Gradually the Liechtensteins lost their other territories, and so their name came to be used as a synonym for the former County of Vaduz. Liechtenstein was almost merged into Bavaria by Napoleon, but managed to remain independent, and continued to do so afterwards. When EH says that Liechtenstein "became independent" in 1868, that's actually not entirely true. As +Gianluca Borg mentioned, Liechtenstein was so small and insignificant that nobody actually bothered to officially recognise them until 1868, but in that year, Liechtenstein also officially declared its neutrality and completely disbanded its armed forces, counting on protection from Austria to stop them being invaded, thus ironically actually increasing its dependence on foreign powers... Then again, it could only ever be invaded by a country that was willing to risk a diplomatic crisis in order to gain half a square kilometre of alpine valleys, so that was never likely. As you can imagine, nobody's bothered invading Liechtenstein since; even in World War II their neutrality was respected by all sides, and today it's a tax haven with more businesses than people, and Europe's only remaining Limited Monarchy, where the monarch's powers fall somewhere in between those of a Constitutional Monarchy and an Absolute Monarchy.

They would stare at each other for about 30 seconds, each calculating the damage to the earth and their empires by fighting, the gain they could earn by winning, and then smile, say “No”/“Nein” and walk away Then Metternich would breathe a sigh of relief.

I think you're being a bit harsh on Napoleon III there... He did almost single-handedly put France back in a position of power on the world stage, pushing himself into so many global conflicts that France could simply no longer be ignored as it had been during the Bourbon Restoration and the July Monarchy. He was also by most means a very capable domestic ruler. The only thing that Napoleon III lacked was a vision for Europe, and given what happened to his uncle, I don't blame him for taking a backseat in European affairs.

They said he was too clever for his own good and not his uncle, I don't think neither assessment was too harsh (unless I missed something they said).
@gianlucaborg195
@gianlucaborg195 7 жыл бұрын
A couple of things starting with the shortest first. There was no July Monarchy. He mostly only built up and expanded on Paris. Napoleon III was no great military commander. Napoleon I was undisputed in his height in 1805. All his military campaigns (Crimea 1853-56, Italy 1860's, Mexican Adventure, etc, had a high cost, high casualty ratio (especially the first 2) and failed to achieve anything of substance for France as he only half-heartedly committed to his campaigns, pleasing neither the Catholics, or the Conservatives or the Expansionists or anyone really.... not even his wife in 1871.)

His fatal mistake was not helping Austria in the Austro-Prussian war, when he had the chance, together they would be able to stand up to Bismarck and limit Prussian expansion. By not getting involved, he allowed Prussia to deafeat Austria and France one by one and throw off the balance of Europe by forming the German Empire. Other than that he was very capable ruler.
@matthiase3287
@matthiase3287 7 жыл бұрын
+Frederick Well france helping austria and austria beating the prussians might as well lead to the forming of the german empire under austria. And not supporting either side might have also lead to a decade long innergerman war that would have crippeled the german federation. I think calling it a fatal mistake is only true in hinside.
@rjfaber1991
@rjfaber1991 7 жыл бұрын
+Frederick the Great - True. As I said, he lacked a vision for Europe. While von Bismarck was reshaping the balance of power in Europe, Napoleon III was busy orchestrating power plays in the Americas and the Far East. It's easy to say that France should have intervened on Austria's behalf, but less easy to actually do so succesfully, considering how much of the French army was stationed in Mexico, how much of France's military industry was occupied with pumping out weaponry for the CSA and Japan, and how much of the French navy was occupied in representing French interests in Asia.

Inny1984 Apparently the shooter did not understand how guns get their power from. The length of the barrel does work to increase the bullet's momentum by prolonging the pressure subjected from the ignited cartridge. If the barrel is rifled, the bullet spin also helps in keeping a steady flight.

Huh...now I want a series on Moltke. You can't make von Bismark sound like such a badass, then bring another dude in and say he's just as much of a badass without expecting us to whine about it :D Plus, I feel the need for more war oriented stuff, cause my favourite series so far has got to be the one on Feudal Japan...god you guys are fantastic at telling stories. Heck, I'll ramble on a bit: The Sengoku Jidai series was so good that I actually started doing my own homework and delving deeper into the bits that you guys didn't have time to squeeze into what was already a densely packed story and ended up setting up a Vampire: The Masquerade pen and paper campaign in the Sengoku Jidai era, with many of the main roles being played by influential vampires (which also meant that I could, with no bit of shame, bring in characters from history that did not actually coexist, cause, you know, vampires are immortal and all that) just because I wanted to share what you had taught me with more people. Trust me, by the time we were done playing, the players had gone through at least a large part of what Feudal Japan meant. Anyway, fantastic stuff, my dudes and dudettes! Love your work and can't wait to quench my thirst for more :)

I suppose there's quite a large generation divide in Germany when it comes to speaking English, but assuming we're just talking about young people, I doubt it's the same. We Dutch like to pride ourselves on being the country with the highest percentage of English speakers among all countries where English isn't an official or historic language (91%), but when it comes to correct pronunciation, we pale in comparison to most modern Germans... That's not just English either; it seems that when Germans learn a foreign language, they really want to do it properly...

In terms of pronunciation it's true. Most people in the world would not try to hide their own accent while speaking other languages but in germany it's common to try to immitate the main accent of a language you learn. For example I'm still in school, my english teacher does not accept false pronunciation, so basically you are right xD

So it would make sence to have them Annexed so that there wont be complications later on, but then the germans in the states started a rebbelion. Then the prussians just started helping them for no good reason. But even though they had a Larger army, Better equipment, and more resources we still won the whole thing and won almost all the battles. Then after losing the germans just came back like 10 years later and just thought "hmm lets just invade them cause we can" and now with austria on their side like bruh And btw they did not steam roll the danes, and ALSO they didn't pull out the lost war.
