Bismarck was a great leader in his younger years, but did not change with the times which led to his downfall. Fun Fact: Bismarck did have any experience in government before his nomination as minister-president of Prussia in 1862. Kind of like someone else who just became President.

Bismarck was appointed to the Prussian legislature in 1847, and served both in government, and as a diplomat between then and 1862.

I think the Kaiser was also responsible. Especially by destroying the Russian relationship that Bismarck had been trying to fix, or atleast not provoke for years. He knew it would set off some kind of war. What he didn't know was the scale.

I think there were some admirable things about Prussia. I can easily see the logic of why they made the choice's they made, but those choice's had as many pitfalls and weaknesses as strengths. There are quite a few good books in English on Bismark and a few on Prussia. Iron Kingdom by Christopher Clark is a good place to start.

Don't compare WWI Germany to WWII Germany, they were completely different. Hitler was a delusional occultist, centered around killing minorities. The German Empire is superior to Nazi Germany in every single way. It would bring great shame to every Kaiser of Germany knowing people like you think it's the same thing. I agree with your comment regarding WWI, but certainly not your comment regarding WWII.

People give lip service to freedom as something that can be taken away by government, but they never talk about it in the sense as something that can be taken away by a foreign, hostile force. A constitution can uphold the rights of the people, but a strong military can, too, and is of equal importance, if not more. Rights mean nothing if they can be taken away by a foreign adversary

Bismarck was a powerful man physically and mentally, his mind was as sharp as a sword while his voice was like a volley of cannonades. He was shot 3 times at point blank range and apprehended the assassin and continued on with his walk home. He rightfully warned the arrogant Wilhelm II that Europe was a powderkeg and some damned foolish thing in the Balkans will set off a chain reaction.

I always find it such a shame that the central powers could never get Russia on their side. Largely this was a war of western liberal capitalism vs heartland European traditionalism. Russia was the epitome of this ideal, Germany merely showed how this could be continued post industrialization. Geographically it made sense why such an alliance could not work: Germany, AU, and Russia would have little to nowhere to expand in a given war. But as far as the ever increasing trend of ideology became present in favour of balance of power and influence potential goes, this choice makes more sense in the long term. Plus, hypothetically it could have still worked if Germany prioritized Russian friendship over Austrian, thus securing their Italian alliance more definitely, and likewise perhaps attain some neighboring Balkan states as allies too. Bulgaria and Romania namely, if not one then both surely. This would likewise mean that the Ottomans would have to be more western oriented as well as Russian rivalry and potential Balkan alliances would have demanded so. But who cares, growing empires make far better allies than declining ones! Largely speaking, Russia needed Germany and Germany needed Russia. Russia needed Germany's industry and army to protect herself for the next 50 years prior to becoming totally self defensible and reliant, while Germany would likewise need her afterwords a similar protection against an ever more American west and also the resources. Hell, I would bet favouring a Russian immigration trend of German emmigrants over a north American one could have helped both likewise as well, assuming somehow this was promoted over the latter. Austria was a decent ally for Germany, certainly reliable and good for positioning but.. she had all the same faults as Germany suffered except with added baggages on top of it all. This made Germany have to favour an over aggressive foreign policy that *needed* war sooner rather than later, or else risk only further losing their industrial edge to the surrounding eastern and western economies.

I compared Bismarck's B/I speech with Lincoln's G/A address to find there are similarities in how both Lincoln and Bismarck wanted national unity, but the tone of the speech is quite different. I would argue that Lincoln had remorse whereas Bismarck was a blood-thirsty tyrant. Both speeches along with national events in the U.S. show that citizens can only be united when they want to be and no leader can force them together. I think Lincoln was a tyrant with a heart while Bismarck lacked one.
