I remember when I was young, my parents still told me not to play too late at night. But as I get older, I don't know when China's security will become better and better. How should I say this? 🤔Cameras do make you safer and track criminals after the fact, faster apprehension of the culprit. In NYC, we have cameras in the metro, Times Square, etc. but some people still do the crimes regardless. Sigh...😮‍💨 Just this week, a guy set a homeless woman on fire in the metro. 😢 So, I think cameras definitely help, but it's not just because of them that crimes in China are so much lesser than certain other countries. I think it's the people and gov't working together, maybe.

I had a similiar experience, it was 2009, I rented the bicycles to cyling along the West Lake in Hangzhou. I parked my bicycles beside a tree and I carelessly left my Sony Camera inside the front baskat of the bicycles then walked into a small park. 10 minutes later, when I back, a youth who wore a volunteer jacket stood beside my bicycles, he told me that I left over my camera in the basket, he asked me to take good care on the camera because it is expensive. I am oversea Chinese, I am pretty sure that he didn't know I am foreigner thus gave me a special care. Then there was no camera along the lake bank, if somebody took the camera, the police can't trace the thief for me.

I once left my keys in right at the subway station entrance, we went by our day as normal, and on our way back we were like “-where is the key, you had the key. -No you.” Surprise, they e-bike had had the key for like 12 hours in 😂😂😂😂😂😂 found it were we left it. Travelling in China nowadays feels super safe to me, I dare say almost like in Japan. Sad to say but I feel safer travelling in China than in my own country in SE Asia. I don’t worry about pickpockets or thieves when I carry/sling my bag on my back, unlike in Europe where I have to carry my bag on my front like an idiot and constantly check on the zips etc. In fact for one of my trips to China this year, i was in a crowded park & there was a brown paper bag left on one of the sitting areas where people were just enjoying their coffees. It was left there for so long. Because I was sitting quite close to it, when I stood up & leave, someone actually called me out and asked if that was my bag which I had forgotten. And when I said no, everyone was like back minding their own business. So you be your own judge as to which culture works.

as 50 yrs old chinese, i wanna say a few words. there are a few reasons: 1. cashless, usually people dont take cash with them, so there is no point to pick pocket or rob people, especially rob,which is a very serious crime in china. 2. cameras. 3. most people have some kind of job and can make money to survive. so there are much less homeless. if the economy goes south, things may change. 4. no serious drug problems. china gov is very hash on the drugs. 5. asian people are usually not that aggressive on the whole.

I was surprised to see ppl in Shenzhen leaving their belonging into the e-scooter at the parking on of metro stations on the of road. Safety helmets, raincoats, … Even through the nights. No problem af all. Impossible even in Taiwan: locked up all.
