That water area you were asking about is part of the area, where the Oulujoki (Oulu river) meets the sea. Oulu is the most northern of the old seaside cities in finland and it used to be one of the most importand tar (for sail ships) producers in europe. The little stairs are likely for maintanance use but people also go swimming from there sometimes (not recomended tho...).

The place you were asking from "What is this, I'm sure this is water." That's correct. What you are pointing at there is the Baltic sea. Gulf of bothnia. Oulu is build right next to the sea and used to be a very busy tar city and harbor before forming to what it is now. It's a great summer city and my hometown. :)

The small stairs are probably for maintenance/water rescue purpose. If you feel like trying it out on your next visit, there's a public beach in Oulu (near the city center) which has winter maintenance, meaning that you can go ice swimming at any given time! Be warned though, you can't access the locker rooms without an electronic key, which is kind of expensive because it's sold as a seasonal pass (30€/year)

Severe thunderstorm destroyed the roof of that hotel few summers ago. It was intense. Oulu is actually rather big city for Finland (4th biggest in the country). It has a very big IT sector with thousands of employees. It has over 200 000 people(I guess more than all of Lapland). The downtown area is small but it's spread out all over the place. University campus(on of the largest in Finland) is some 6-7kilometers from the downtown. Winter these Finnish cities are pretty dead, but if you visit summer it's full of people and activity like music festivals and such.

If you really want to get those old European vibes, you need to take one of those big boats to Stockholm or Tallinn. They have city districts straight from the medieval times. Turku should have been like that in Finland, but it burned to the ground too many times, so it's just some scattered genuinely old buildings. While Helsinki is decently sized on the Nordic scale, it was only founded in 1550, so you won't find anything medieval there, although it has lots of a bit younger, beautiful buildings. Oulu is from 1605, so it's even younger, in fact barely older than New York City. Plus Oulu was a tiny place until fairly recently; at the end of the 19th century Oulu only had some 15,000 people, which automatically means most of the building are very new. Still, I recall you saying you want to travel all over Europe, so you'll get your dose of the old world eventually.

@herrakaarme
@herrakaarme 2 жыл бұрын
@@anni8456 Yeah, I probably worded it too ambiguously. Helsinki was allowed to grow naturally, which means slowly, until it became the capital rather late, so the building pool didn't grow that fast either. I merely wanted to point out that since it was founded as a town so late, it's more or less impossible for it to have anything from the Middle Ages. If I recall correctly, there were some farms and fisherman huts there already before Helsinki was officially founded, but obviously such wooden structures wouldn't exist anymore. Rauma is a beautiful and interesting town, definitely worth visiting, but it's also a very small town. Porvoo is likewise an old, small town. The atmosphere is different compared to the bigger cities out there.

2:37 That part of the water is called hartaanselka, until 2011 it was the sea, but it became an official river. Not lake, but backwater and the backwater turns into the sea after about half a kilometer.

Just a tip, when saying "oulu", really say the O, as now you kinda say ulu. Finnish doesn't have pronounciation helps as all of the letter are said as they are. A is always the same sound etc.. ALso no feminines or masculines in Finnish, which should make it easier. . Though I know it must be hard! Keep at it, even if the ppl you meet speak decent English, I still think it worth to study the basics of the language. Keep up keepin' up!' I remember your comment of Finland not being an island. While technically correct, there are many practical reasons to think it largely as an island. There are so many lakes, rivers and islands on lakes and sea that you're often somewhat like on an island: close to water and separated by water. But mostly people think about this when they say island in this context: About 90 percent of Finland's and Sweden's exports and imports go by sea. This part of the world is separated from the rest of Europe by the Baltic sea, which connects but also separates us. Since flying has become so inexpensive, people don't always think about how much importance seaways still have in moving goods. And the amount of passenger traffic on ferries between Finland, Estonia, Sweden and Germany is also large. Oulu is also on the seashore, as many other major towns are.

@@Settiis Poor take for sure, but i think more developed is also poor take. Oulu is actually bigger city than Turku, by population and population density. @Settiis
@Settiis 2 жыл бұрын
@@johanneskoskela384 Development is good across Finland infrastructure wise, but southern cities like Turku, Tampere or Helsinki and the smaller cities surrounding them are definitely more developed than northern cities and the difference will be even more drastic in the future due to domestic immigration. Young people want to move to the large cities which drives investments to those areas, so the growing demand is met, which in turn attracts even more people, and so forth.

@@blackcoffeebeans6100 When I moved to Helsinki about 40 years ago, it was already spoiled compared to the more rural areas where I have lived. People are trashy creatures always.

@@blackcoffeebeans6100 If you're saying that the Helsinki Capital area isn't completely spoiled, I agree. But you can't walk in a forest and hope to see no signs of human activity or trash. If nothing else, there is likely to be some traffic notices from a distance. Very little, almost none, of the area is in untouched natural state. There has just been too long and big habitation in the area that some form of agriculture, industry or habitation has effected almost every place. Some effects can n be seen also almost everywhere else since no part of the country has been without any effects. But outside towns and cities there used to be much more places, where you could go and not immediately notice signs of humanity. I had the privilege in my childhood to live in places, where I could experience something like it in only a walking distance from my home. Moving to more city like places was a big disappointment which has stayed with me.

How do you operate day to day without understanding Finnish

I have got the impression that he does know some English..😉 It could explain how a person without knowing Finnish sign language, local Saame language or Finnish might survive. Ps. He seems to be worried about bears. Those don't really care what language you speak. They are very democratic in that way. They also don't care about humans. So there is no real chance that you could take a walk in some residential neighborhood and meet one. Even in places where they exist, you need to take some special effort to see them. Most wild animals prefer to keep some distance from humans, unless they are desperately sick or hungry.

@@blackcoffeebeans6100 Most Finn's can be silent in several languages. The fact that we can doesn't force us to speak.🤔😉

Let's meet up and I teach you how to pronounce it 😅😅😅 Which part of Oulu are you?
@just42tube

At the beginning of the video your second attempt of pronouncing Oulu sounded right. But then you somehow lost it. On purpose perhaps? It isn't Ulu, which unfortunately you seem to prefer to use. It is Ou-lu, two syllables. The first syllable Ou is pronounced the same as you would say in OMG.

the only annoying background noise is the elevator music that you really need not to put in there. sometimes ambient noise is much more desireable. i already know how elevators sound :)

Your pronounciation is only a little off, you keep dropping the 'O' and only saying 'ulu' haha :D. I tell my english speaking friends to say it like they are suprised ("Oh! Lu") but idk if it is any help lmao
