In 1999 I passed my test aged 20. I then drove my Grandparents car for 5 years. In 2004 I bought my first car. A 1986 740 GLE estate for £425. (D795RJW) Silver, manual sunroof, electric front windows. Heated seats and mirrors and electric. Seats and interior in red! Various brittle trims. Everything worked. Upgraded the sunroof and wired a 940 electric sunroof motor and switch and cover. Alloys changed to 240 Virgo alloys and enjoyed the car. Moved to Normandy, France in it and kept it 5 years and renovated a house over there. Was having running issues after 3 hours driving and ended up PX (French registered) it for a brand new Corolla D4D hatch. Ran perfect while waiting for 2 weeks for Toyota. Felt sad to see it go. Didn't like the carb even though had replacement Webber, manual choke. Sold up in France and sold LHD Toyota. Bought a 1989 240 GLT auto estate (F912YOA) with the B230E engine like your 740. Paid £350 in 2009 and sold in 2018 for £500 with 3 months MOT. Covered 234,000 miles 73,000 added by me. and still ran perfect and reliable. Both 740 and 240 needed the passenger side outriggers welding, 240 twice. Charged £50 and £150. In 2016 bought a 1996 Volvo 940 SE LPT Auto estate for £250. P483UWV A neglected unloved example with 4 different makes of tyre. Ran really well and ABS worked as well as everything else, but AC didn't. Not surprising on a cheap car. Over the years replaced cambelt, genuine Volvo and tensioner, waterpump SKF, exhaust and cat, all the cooling hoses and rad. Tyres Goodyear ultra grip 9 winters. Summer Michelin Energy savers. Disks Brembo all round. Half leather to full leather. Got AC working last Summer and I rebuilt the front suspension. Lovely car to work on when needed and reliable. I use it as my work van. Exterior faded a bit but still puts a smile on my face driving it. Covered 210,000 miles. Will need the battery tray area welding at some point. A really usable daily. 740 and 940 instrument clusters are well known to be dodgy. Go on the Volvo Owners Club and you'll get lots of advice.

Welcome aboard! Funnily enough, I’ve been filming some other Volvos this week that have been stashed away for a few years and will be for sale. Hopefully, we’ll upload that particular video next week.

If it is just for fun just leave the small things. I have an old 740 as well. Old Volvo's are great cars and very reliable but their plastics are bad and I mean bad. They are pulverizing all the time.

The speedometer gets the reading from the rear diff might be worthwhile unscrewing that bolt sensor in the diff and cleaning it. It's up quite high so you aren't going to lose any oil in the diff it's actually quite a simple fix if it's the diff sensor

As my partner would testify, I cannot stand things that do not work, so whilst I own a car, it all gets done.

Milage correction really doesn't cost too much just get some clocks and take it to someone. And i reckon you use old mot's to try work out the actual milage and have it actually reading over 430k
@moddenby4525
@moddenby4525 Жыл бұрын
Or thinking about it speedo and milage not working is almost certainly linked im not sure on volvos but on a lot of old cars speed sensor is on the gear box. And because your mileomiter is manual if replacing that does fix it you could probably just take clocks out and change it yourself from behind

It’s possible. A friend sent me a link to this article about it, as he had a similar problem on a 240. www.volvotips.com/index.php/740-760-780/tutorials/how-to-repair-the-740-tripmeter/

A lady towing a horse trailer reversed into me recently. We swapped details and I checked the car when I stopped in a safe place (we were on a country road). She was happy; I couldn’t find a single mark on the bumper 😂

I think you should get the clocks fixed not get a replacement also it could be the contacts give them a clean with contact cleaner and see if that works and the glove box nob is a common issue as my step dad had 2 740s one like yours and a seven seater

Honestly, I don’t know at this point. I’ve got so many projects on the go, I’m finding it hard to commit to anything. That said, the Volvo is going to get more attention than the others, because it’s such a fun feature car, that there is every possibility they will get done. It would make such a difference to the appearance. Thank you for the support. We both appreciate it - Elton
