Hello All! Thanks for the extremely kind words and the questions for our next solar videos, obviously we're diving into an extremely confusing and exciting subject. I'll address a few of the most common comments now and I will take note of the rest for future vids. - Our Site - We have tons more info not covered in the video on our site: www.gonewiththewynns.com/rv-solar-install-guide - 50k subs - This is such a milestone for us and we couldn't be more happy with where we are and where we're heading with our website and YT channel. Thanks for all the kudos. - Our Batteries - As stated in the subject info we still have our lithium battery bank, this install was done 2 days before the battery install. - Tesla Batteries - At this time we've been told it's not an option for RVs, not sure why, but that could change one day. - Series Wiring - There seems to be a lot of questions surrounding Series vs. Parallel wiring. With our exact setup and MPPT charge controller, the "series" wiring was recommended. I'm sure this will be a video. - Tilting - We will film a tilting video - A/C - We will attempt to run our A/C off our battery and solar in the future.

Great video Jason and Nikki! We thought we could answer a popular question about reduced output when the panels are wired in series (due to panels being shaded): When part of the array is shaded, wiring in series will still produce power. All of the panels have diodes to prevent power loss when wired in series. What you would see is the voltage drop from 100 plus volts to 80 volts and this would only be if one panel was completely blacked out (not if shaded by clouds). The batteries are 12 volts and only require 14.7 VDC input to receive a complete charge. Using an MPPT controller and bringing in higher voltages will actually have less effect from shading. Another great reason to use the panels in series is because we raise the voltage while lowering the current to the MPPT controller allowing us to use smaller gauge cables without the loss you would have at a parallel voltage. The MPPT then steps down the voltage from 100 plus volts to 20. The MPPT controller is located next to the batteries so we use the large #4 cable to carry the high current and low voltage to the battery bank. Hope this makes sense and helps out!

Rvwith Tito You make a great case for running in series. My experience comes from camping w/other rv's with solar. We all love to talk and compare. Back 4 years ago we had a chance to compare like systems but wired parallel vs Series. The series system was out performed hands down by " The parallels" in full sun. and when shaded the series almost shut down. Now w/ blocking diodes in panels maybe series has advantages ? What I was trying to say is that if your were to run 55 amps being pushed by 18 volts Through # 10 wire the voltage loss would be crippling. But what I really know is RV solar systems have their complexities and I'm alway's learning. Thanks for your input.

Are your panels 12 or 24 volt? Unless I've misunderstood what I've read on solar the charge controller can take either and convert to 12v from 24v with a corresponding doubling of amps. If correct that would halve the number of panels needed for the same amount of power with less roof space used.

What went into Your decision to wire in series??? If any part of that array is shaded you drastically reduce there output, almost to nothing , Also you don't get nearly the AMPS and AMPS are everything. Also wired in series A # 10 of 20' ( you need a # 4 ) wire from roof to controller results in 4% loss. Now wired in Parallel because of larger current (Amps flowing) the voltage loss would be 20% . Very important to keep any wire run in a solar system under 3% voltage loss. I see this all the time. RV manufactures design systems ( middle of the road) that do not extract maximum energy from solar panels to batteries. Yes, energy will flow to your batteries and might meet all your needs……..But simple changes here might be better. That said, I love your videos and congratulation on 50 thousand subscribed !!!!!
@tazmun9 жыл бұрын
+Craig Marston They say series, but I'm not sure it really is...it could still be in parallel depending on how those plugs are wired. I highly suspect there is an extra set of wires just to carry thru-put built in and each panel just taps into that set of wires. There is a possible flip side of this argument in that higher voltage (as you might gain in series) is more efficient in a longer and even smaller wire then. Neither amps nor volts is a unit of energy but rather Watts is which is arrived at by I x E=W. However the total voltage of a series marraige is a value which I can't see much use for unless you transform it to a lower voltage down the line. However DC voltage won't work in a transformer unless it's pulsating or changed to AC and by the time you convert and transform your losses due to efficiency will kill any gains and leave you at a loss even.
@RVwithTito9 жыл бұрын
+Craig Marston Good points Craig. Here are some additional thoughts. Shading: Some panels have a bypass diode designed to pass the voltage through (bypassing the panel) if the output of the panel drops below a certain level (shading). This is to minimize the one panel's impact on the entire solar array when wired in series. I don't know if these GoPower panels are equipped with this though. It is not mentioned on their spec sheet. Series vs Parallel: I believe those are 160W panels that put out around 18-22 volts. Wired in series (at 18v each) they would send around 108 volts to the controller at a maximum of around 54 amps (8.8 - 9 amps each) under ideal conditions. With #10 awg wire at 20 feet, I calculate the drop at just around 2%. Yes, with #4 gauge wire that would be lower. I try to keep it under 1% and would probably switch to #4 if the run was longer than 20 feet. Now with a PWM controller, what you say is true regarding lost AMPS. However, it looks like they are using an Outback MPPT charge controller that can probably take up to 1000 (or more) volts as input. This results in the 108 incoming volts being converted into extra current to the battery bank (plus an added 20% boost) which means there is no wasted amps. In fact they may get more under optimal conditions. Anyway, those are my thoughts and I hope my numbers are right. I can say that I have a little bit of solar envy and wish I had that much power on my roof. Pretty cool! Jason/Nikki, what is the capacity of your battery bank? (nevermind...just saw your response below 700AH Lithium...cool) And let me join in and also congratulate you on the 50K subs!

I’ve heard from other full timers that they like to point the front of the RV into the noon day sun as opposed to broad side to keep the rig as cool as possible, That positioning would effect the direction of tilt of panels. I've owned travel trailers for about 40 yrs now, they have changed some but not a bunch... A couple of notes- With a limited amount of air volume inside, how do you manage to deal with moisture built up inside the coach especially during the winter? That is really the first question, what I really want to know is how do you deal with those flimsy mounts for tilting the panels during a storm or when you forget, lol....
@gonewiththewynns7 жыл бұрын
+Deserthunter Mike You need to open a ceiling vent and run the fan on exhaust if you're using propane (because it releases water vapor). That's one reason we prefer cooking on our induction burner. Question 2: the tilt arms are pretty sturdy and do fine in normal weather conditions (like a thunderstorm). You should never drive with the panels tilted up though - guessing that would be bad!
@MikeDesertHunterHale7 жыл бұрын
I was just wondering about moisture, we've had several trailers over the years it seems like the most damage is from moisture from just breathing and cooking. The inside of the windows gets covered with ice. If you haven't guessed it we dry camp even in the winter. I miss the trailer manufacturer's not offering storm windows anymore. My last trailer a 30' Terry Taurus had the storm windows, the warmest trailer we ever had... insulated floor, even a heat vent going into the fresh water storage..... I have a couple of older panels on our present trailer that I'm going to change out for the newer panel, also our batteries gave up the ghost last season, I'm going to replace with LiPo's....

Nice work you doing. I have few questions (1) I used a 12 AWG cable for connecting my solar pannel to my charge controller? Can I use that same 12 AWG cable for connecting my charge controller to my 200AH battery? (2) what size circuit breaker in amps can I use on the positive side between my battery (200AH) and my inverter (1500 watt pure sine wave)
@davestennes3058 жыл бұрын
If you've got 12AWG at 12v going from solar to the controller, and 12v going out to batteries, you can use the same wire. On a recent installation I did, if I remember correctly I had 24V at about 50 amps going into the controller, and 12V at 100 amps going out to the batteries - so my wires going to the batteries were thicker. If you're battery bank is 12v, then your current going to a 1500watt inverter would be 125amps. I thinks a 150amp circuit breaker would be sufficient.

I saw 4 batteries so I would imagine that your current set up allows you to power everything except the AC and microwave oven from your battery bank. Is there any other typical item that an RV'er would use that wouldn't use battery/inverter power because of a large power draw?
@bradkw42959 жыл бұрын
+lowell mccormick No problem running a microwave off a setup like this, and can be done with one much smaller. Good to have a PSW inverter instead of a MSW, as microwaves can be finicky. They actually have enough solar to run a small, window AC...length of run depends on batteries. If had LiPO4 batteries, could conceivably run AC quite a bit. Good AGM's would get you 3-4hrs run time at a guesstimate.

Very cool Jason is back! Our Roadtrek has 300 watts of panels flat on top and has been more than enough for a small B-class RV. I would buy a house for your system. What are the coordinates of your location now?
@gonewiththewynns9 жыл бұрын
300watts is perfect for a class b! We are at the Trona Pinnacles and we shot a video on the place that we will put together and launch in a few days!

you could easily fit double the power on that camper,simply instal the panels vertically,this way you run a.c. and charge batteries the same time

You mention electric shock a few times in this video. Of course, no one wants a shock, but if these are 12V panels, I would think the shock would not be that much of a worry. I would not expect 12V to be much of a shock. Am I missing something?

So wait ....a fuse between the panel and controller. And 1 between panels n battery?

you said 50 or 60 amps what voltage is that at 12 volts 24 volts 48 volts 120 volts or more simply put tell me the wattage

Another odd thing was those rivets. As you said those are not ok. The roof has very thin aluminium layer. What's the point to drill big hole and shoot small rivet to it. The rivet can't keep the panel there without glue and then there is that big hole under the rivet...

We just got an RV and am thinking about this type of install. Just curious--How much did it cost $$$

Do you have to climb on top of the RV and manually tilt the panels?
@Gmoyer11Tech9 жыл бұрын
Yes
@aguyandhiscomputer9 жыл бұрын
unless you install motors to lift and adjust them.

Why would you not put it up to 1000 watts with one more solar panel?
@tittiger8 жыл бұрын
I am amazed that you can put 6 panels in series and not go over the voltage limits for the Outback FX80. I guess that is why you check the specs on the panels. :-P That does explain the small wire for a 100W bank.

hello sir..what is the best connection on solar panel..is it series or parallel.....i have 20amps solar charger controller..300watt panel....
@gonewiththewynns7 жыл бұрын
There's no simple answer - there are a lot of variables based on your controller, how many panels, the type of panel, etc. If you're not sure you should contact a solar installer and they can help you.
@Andywmm99 жыл бұрын
Awesome video! This is a lot of electricity. What do you find yourself doing with all of this power?
@gonewiththewynns9 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Miller because we have a residential refrigerator we need this much power to keep it going. Then there is the fact that we work from the RV so we have to power our computers and such while editing.
@OcRefrig7 жыл бұрын
One Computer at Full Load Could Draw 500-750 Watts by itself. 1000 watts is a Decent size Solar system. Livable. You Need 2100 watts just to Start a compressor on a refrigerator minimum. Running load on a standard side by side fridge is 11.2 amps or 1100 watts. so Just when the fridge runs you are actually negative. so 2,000 watts would be a better set up actually.

If you had your choice between your solar power system OR your composting toilet, which would you choose?
@gonewiththewynns9 жыл бұрын
+Nomadic Native That's not a fair choice...both! If money were an issue, I would start off with a really good inverter and plenty of battery power. Then I would add solar and the toilet as funds allowed.
