Granger you need to still have the fire department/fire marshals out to investigate and find the source.
@willholt2254

For sure. Also, not ideal to get a lung full of the bad smoke...it's no fire pit you're inhaling. 1. Could be state law for you (unsure, but is here in NC) to report a fire and it be investigated 2. Insurance purposes if that is a factor 3. Bourbon Moth Woodworking channel has a really cool experiment on this very cause

Granger the first thing you need to do is purchase fire extinguishers to be on every level and corner of the barn. Fire alarm system needs to be put in even before the construction is completed. God brought you out to look at the barn not by chance. It was a divine appointment. Seeing this and hearing the concern/fear in your voice took me back to when our home caught on fire and we almost lost my younger sister who was 16 at the time. She gets up at 5 AM to be at school by 6 AM for marching band practice. So by 5 PM in the evening she was tired when the fire happened. Our family home caught fire one evening. The kitchen/dining room area hallway to the back family room walls and ceiling were 1 inch pine and lacquered. The home was over 50 years old. Our youngest sister was home while our parents were visiting me at the hospital one hour away. She put grease on the stove to cook french fries and left the plastic handle, metal spoon in the pot of grease and went to the great room and sat down and fell asleep. Our two small dogs jumped on her and woke her up and the house was thick with smoke. She went next-door to the neighbors and told them and they thought it would be something they could put out. The entire kitchen was engulfed in flames and they called the volunteer fire department and they put the fire out. It was so hot that it warped, the refrigerator and freezer. The fire fighter said another 2 to 3 minutes we would’ve lost our entire home as it has just gotten into the duct system. The firefighters told us that the naughty wood pine that was lacquered was a fire waiting to happen. Lacquer is an accelerant for wood, especially old wood. Kudos to the Valparaiso Florida volunteer fire fighters as they cleaned it up before they left. We were out of our home for three months. We are very blessed that God watched over our youngest sister and two dogs. The lacquered knotty pine was removed from the rest of the walls in our home.

God sent you out there. I'm sure of it. Thank God no one was injured. It could have been a lot worse. The barn could have completely burned down. At least it can be repaired. God was definitely with you. Like your son said, you could've been on tour. You have a sensitive sense of smell. They say never put oiled based, shellacked, stained etc rags into your washer. It can set your washer on fire too and burn your home down. Like Granger said, just throw them out. It's a good lesson to learn.

I've been a woodworker for 20+ years and always spread out my rags and lay them flat on a non-combustible surface (like concrete) until they turn hard. Do this outside. Then you can throw them out. I also have a metal paint can filled with water halfway for rags inside, always seal the lid. On every can of pretty much any oil based stain, varnish, lacquer, poly, paint thinner, warns that they can spontaneously combust if not properly disposed. People never read it. Linseed oil is one of the worst offenders.....it's a great sealer for wood but when it evaporates on a rag after use, it heats up quickly. You can feel the heat coming from the rag.....bundled up and squished rags make this worse. Glad you caught this in time and saved some incredible head and heart aches. On a side note, I would reuse that burned wood. It turns out beautiful if you know how to prep it. Use a wire brush along the grain to remove to char, this exposes the sapwood and gives the wood some amazing texture. You can then stain or poly it. I've created many art pieces using this technique (called Shou Sugi Ban). You probably don't want it back on the wall but you could make a cool picture frame or another art piece out of it.

I caught a fire burning in our garage. I smelled wood burning and just thought someone was having a campfire. Then I began to smell an electrical fire smell which prompted me to start sniffing out the source near walls in my kitchen. That’s when I opened the door in the kitchen that leads to our garage and there it was. Luckily we have a spigot and a hose in our garage and I put it out quickly. We were so lucky as we store many accelerants in our garage. The cause? An air purifier and a static charge that managed to ignite a desk that my granddaughter’s car seat was sitting on that then burnt the car seat which melted and then began to drip to the concrete floor and burnt a patch of that. Also nearby was cardboard boxes with a plastic storage bin sat on top of them that caught fire and melted as well. That is where I intervened. Crazy!

OMG! I am so thankful for this lesson.. I work with things like this sometimes and never would I dream that a chemical reaction could happen in the disposal process and a fire start from nothing. Wow! energy is energy but wow...Thanks for the lesson!

As someone who worked in the industry of sales for paint products I used to remind every customer of this possibility/risk. I've also seen this type of thing happen when I worked in a factory and coworkers unaware of the risks. As you said mistakes happen and hopefully people are more aware now from watching this video to prevent it happening to them if at all possible. Glad it didn't go worse and everyone's OK not severely hurt or anything like that. Hopefully it won't be too bad of a clean up and pray for safety for the rest of the build

Wow so much to be thankful here! Thankful you were home because if you would have been gone the situation without a doubt would of been worse. Also being in TX you are so right when you spoke about the way it may have spread. So thankful you listened when God spoke to you to go outside! So thankful nobody was inside working. Praise everyone is safe and the damage can be repaired!

I’m sorry you guys suffered damage to your beautiful barn. I was planning on redoing my Grandmother’s dresser and I had no idea. This video probably saved my apartment complex! I keep a trash bag in the corner of my patio next to a 52 year old fence. (Apartments built in 71’) I might have left soiled rags in it from staining. Or perhaps tossed them into the dumpster. That would have been awful too! Thanks for sharing! I know now!

Granger, you may not agree but I perceive that the enemy is real mad you have decided to follow the Lord and do ministry. But, the Word says NO WEAPON! No scheme! Job 5:12
