Today we are going for a hike! Before that, I have unfinished business to settle. Isabelle and I are gonna ride on one of the best slab trails in Nelson! We have been working on slabs in back in Squamish, and we might have weird techniques on slabs...

I think the chicken wing position is letting you get your torso closing to your stem = more weight on front tire = more braking traction for the same amount of finger strength/lever pull. It forces you to come down/forward instead of back. Funny about the porcupines at the Kokanee Glacier parking, just read about them, had never heard of that before, them biting brake lines and tires!

Yuka, You maybe should try Hope V4 brakes. They have bite point and throw adjustments without tools. You can set the bite point further in to the pull and really get the feel you want.

for some older brakes they are designed for 2 fingers , I have some old formulas which have so long levers that you have to 2 finger otherwise it's more impractical

dont worry about the brakes. However you have to use them to do it right. Whats right for one might not be right for another. I would NOT use my front brakes only down something that steep...AND i wouldnt even go down those hills you did.You were killing it. Crazy!!

I'm a pretty strong guy and I always have two fingers ready on brakes, gives you way more control, don't listen to anyone who says jut use one finger that's a bad technique as you can easily knock one finger off going downhill as you clip a tree...one finger ready and two fingers to take control always. Also decreases forearm pump on DH.

I’m thinking if your able to use 2 fingers on the lever then the lever itself may be too close to your grip. The closer to the end of the lever your finger is at the more mechanical leverage you have for the brake. So if your not getting the power and your actually able to fit two fingers on the lever then that to me says you have the lever too close to the grip so when your 1 finger braking your 1 finger is too centered in the lever rather than being at the end where the hook is. Just something to think about.

:-) , I commented on Eric's video that you need to raise your elbows Yuka to gain strength to control the front of the bike and here you are doing it , awesome , I am not claiming I influenced your riding as I know the time fame is way out for that to be true , just happy for you that you are getting your technique right and being more in control and safer on the bike ;-) .

You teach well... very memorable lesson with chicken wings. I will have to try it next time I roll something. I definitely favor my back brake, so I am also trying to get used to more front brake. But wow, I don't know if I can ever get used to ONLY front brake in those rolling situations.

I've followed your channel since your first videos and the progression has been inspiring with your totally authentic presentation. The "wings" thing is a big learning step and it's great you've brought it to life in this video. So many ways of describing technique. For me, I don't think about my elbows; I think about my head. If my head is low, my shoulders are low and my elbows are bent. Fear always makes us want to push our heads away from danger - the phrase of "throwing ourselves into situations head first" is about acting without fear. Mountain biking needs you to be in the right "head first" place on your bike which is contrary to how normal life teaches us. When we face our fear with good technique.... it isn't scary. When we react to fear and abandon technique (arms straight) it is proper scary and reinforces our fear. How can we progress if we try to do hard, scary things with bad technique? Brake levers and single finger braking isn't about strength. It is about leverage. When you use two fingers (unless you have a residual injury), you've moved your strongest index finger to a position where it has less leverage - you have less braking strength. If you're finding yourself reverting to two finger braking there may be something wrong with your cockpit setup or it may be another thing related to position on the bike. Your grips should have even contact all across the palms of your hands. If you have your "wings in", the outside edge of you palm tends to lift away from the grips. Wings out, you will have full palm contact with the grips. You need your brakes to be easy and ready to pull from that position. For small hands definitely work on the reach adjustment and also pay close attention to the amount you reach inwards on the bars. If, in critical terrain or when you get tired, your hands creep in from full width on the grips it is another indicator your brake lever position isn't correct. Can't say I see any of that happening in this video though. Keep up the good (and very entertaining) work!
