Glad I could help you out with some slab technique Ryan :). You nailed it! A few things to consider when you're riding slabs but they are so satisfying when you role them smooth. If anyone wants to learn how to ride these amazing features or explore our trail network be sure to get in touch with Ride BC. We'll set you up with a ride of a lifetime! Check us out at www.ridebc.ca or contact me at james@ridebc.ca. Cheers!

With all the work that the front brakes do on a slab, do you have to have a really good set or can you still be safe with entry level?
@mtbboy19935 жыл бұрын
dual piston brakes is a must, so no single piston brakes, your hands will be abused, and need to use whole hand to brake enough. if having mechanical brakes dual piston is what you need. if hydraulic they are mostly dual piston or quad piston, but hope had 6 piston brakes, I saw they came back on the racing scene, but overkill for most I guess. you need proper rotors that can handle it, so floating rotors is not a bad idea, and bigger rotors, not tiny rotors. use metallic or semi metallic pads, cus resin pads will wear fast, it might last few weeks, but metallic and semi metallic last for months. Shame many kids have to use single piston brakes, and can barely brake. but you don't need a carbon lever and titanium hardware, to brake, what matters is to have a proper brake not the top model, so no leaking, the brake has to be stiff enough, have enough adjustment to get it to fit you and have enough leverage, which on some brakes like mine won't work as great, cus adjusting the reach inwards makes it so you can't get to full power, so that's why additional adjustment is needed, budget hydraulic brakes usually don't have that, but for me it works ok, cus I don't have small hands and short fingers, so I can get perfect lever position with M6000 brakes, but for you I advice to get the more expensive brakes, cus you can adjust the reach of the lever without effecting the actuation point of the brake, and actually be able to lock up the brakes. I think it's a shame that all of these features are not on all models of brakes as these features are must have features, I can get away with it cus they fit me perfectly, but for you they won't.

Get rid of that Sram combo, I don't know for sure if its the pads or the rotor, some claim it's the pads, some that it's the rotor, maybe both, but sure is not great, I use Hope Floating Rotors they stay cooler, can have smaller rotors, and lighter setup, not that really makes a big difference, but they wear much slower than one piece rotors. I haven't tried Sram pads or rotors. but maybe the shape of the holes are contributing to the noise. the hope rotors are almost silent, unless wet or contaminated., only subtle friction sound from pads against the rotor, but when riding fast all you hear is the tyres, the dirt, roots and your won breath. have you tried other brake setups or pads or rotors? Sram seems to be known for their screaming, howling, squeaking, brakes.
@TheLoamRanger5 жыл бұрын
My blue Evolink that I rode all last year had Hopes with the two piece rotors. They emit a much, much worse sound, in my opinion. They have a very high pitch squeal unlike any other brake and it’s incredibly loud on camera. Most other Hope riders didn’t even notice it until I pointed it out. It’s unbearable! Even Hope’s pro riders have the same noise, so unfortunately it wasn’t just a setup issue (I tried everything). So far, there have been two people who haven’t had the noise. McTrail Rider and yourself. You got a lucky set!
@mtbboy19935 жыл бұрын
@@TheLoamRanger I got several rotors, I got 3 wheel sets, none of them do it. I used Shimano finned metallic pads, I even bend the pads. I use M6000 brakes. the only times I got high noise from the hope rotors is when the brakes were leaking and when they were wet, if the pads are glazed, due to contamination they will make a horrible noise, all will no matter the disk, pads, or brakes, no matter the combo, this happen to me, so I had to swap the rear brake, I think mine was leaking and getting mineral oil on the pads and disk, and I also had big air bubble in the master cylinder and, spongy inconsistent braking, I of course cleaned the rotor, sanded it, and after installing the new brake, bed it in, with new pads, the same great silence and brake feel was back. I haven't tried Hope's pads or brakes, only the rotors. maybe the brakes don't get to a good temperature, mine stay in good temp, and give great bite. mine don't get too hot, and are rarely cold.
