Tip: Get a hitch lock. When you leave the trailer without a hitch lock, anyone who has a truck with a hitch can hook up to that trailer and its gone. I have been RVing in a 26' trailer for over 20 years and you will not regret spending $50.00 on a nice hitch lock.

When she says brand new, she's referring to 1998. What she means by brand new is actually 1998. Her definition of brand new is 1998. By referring to brand new, she specifically means the year 1998. When she uses the term brand new, she's talking about the year 1998. What she's trying to say is that 1998 is considered brand new to her. When she says brand new, she's talking about the recentness of 1998. Her idea of brand new corresponds to the year 1998. By brand new, she means the relatively modern era of 1998. In my experience, if you ever run a 7.3L diesel out of fuel/air in the line, just take the lid off the fuel bowl and cycle the key until it fills up, put the cap back on and it should start up no problem😅 coming from a diesel technician

Something worth mentioning regarding your truck. I don't know what years were affected, but some of the diesel 7.3 trucks had a plastic pickup tube that would break off near the bottom of the tank and the symptoms would be exactly as what happened to you, minus the water, obviously. Typically these trucks you could not run under a quarter of a tank when they got older, it wasn't a design flaw with the size of the tank, it was the plastic pickup tube broke off.

This is a good truck, the water was most likely the major culprit and the low fuel with air just made it apparent. You dont have to keep half a tank all the time, should be fine with a quarter tank. That truck will run for a very long time just needs good regular maintenance and make sure whoever you have work on it specializes in diesels. You may want to look at running synthetic oil too. We did just to help with wear and tear. We also use OEM filters and such. We tow with ours too.

If you ran out of fuel at 1/4 tank, your fuel tank pickup foot most likely broke off. Your water in fuel light would have most likely come on if there was enough water in the fuel. If you lift the bed up about a foot on the drivers side, you can easily pull the 2 sending units and replace the pickup feet on the sending units. It's easier than dropping both tanks.

This truck you'll got is great. There are 8 thing besides water that a long journey with a diesel shouldn't be without. 1. Booster box 2. WD-40 3. Air Compressor 4. 1-gallon extra oil 5. 1/2-gallon extra brake fluid 6. 1-qt power stering fluid 7. Diesel fuel additive is 2 types Cetane booster and Anti-Gel

About the Diesel Fuel additives: Cetane helps fuel burn Easier and cleaner. The USA distributed diesel fuel has among the lowest in the world (so far as my research many moons ago.) I only buy Motorcraft Cetane Booster for my old Super Duty! When price shopping it's been the best value per volume that I could find and it's staying with the home company! Cleaner burn/Better Mileage! Anti-Gel is helpful year round. This is because of water dispersants. Eack brand has thier own ingredients blend of concoctions to do the same thing. I use Howes mostly.

Vin Diesel did the voice of the Giant for the Iron Giant movie. "You stay I go" Change your fuel filter often. You should look for a real pasty shop and try one, they are awesome and filling. Escanaba used to have one of the best shops for pastys, it was an house turned into a little restaurant. Any vehicle can breakdown, if the vehicle had not been driven a lot and you are now driving it a lot things will pop up. I am not a big ford fan but the truck should be good you will have some things that have aged is all. Stay safe and healthy.

That said we live just 2 miles from our mechanic and I am a former outboard motor mechanic who put himself through school working at a marina. It's all about the diagnostics. Anyone who says newer would be better hasn't experienced an ECU failing or simply had to replace one of those new LED or HID assemblies. Stopped to help a semi truck gravel hauler in Arizona. He had a quarter tank for fuel before starting up an 8% grade. He had the same problem as y'all. You are correct: never let a diesel go below 1/2 tank in hilly country or below 3/8 tank before filling. Recommend you carry a spare 10 gallons of diesel in case you get low and need to add some to get to the next fill up. That's what we do.

I love your truck! What a great opportunity to travel the country in a vintage Ford. For the sake of all the truckers and professional drivers watching, you are driving a diesel now, not a gasoline engine. When you say you ran short on gas we instantly assume you weren't able to fart, because you are driving a diesel, and there is no gas in your truck. Try to get used to saying FUEL, especially if you ever have anyone else fuel your truck, they won't fill it with gas. Your truck and trailer is a truly magnificent-looking rig. It is really great to see good folks towing a trailer that is less than the GVWR of their truck. I would totally drive that baby across the country!

I think you guys are doing a great job! All of us old timers have gone through the exact same kinds of difficulties. FYI. My Dad had a number of diesel trucks. He found that some of these country gas stations had very dirty diesel (water mostly). He added some in-line fuel filters made for filtering out water. The water collects in a see through container in the engine compartment. Occasionally you twist a valve and drain the water. No more truck stopping in the middle of no where. Very simple to do!

Alot of people install a fuel sump kit on these older trucks to combat this issue so you don't gotta worry about parking on a incline or driving a steep hill will my truck make it or start if shut off, it draws fuel from the bottom bottom of the tank an does wonders for this issue giving you use on of almost all of the fuel tank vs only 3/4, it's not expensive just find someone you know or a subscriber that can help install it because a shop may take you for 3x the kit price in labor. Kits run around 120$-180$ Just look up FASS fuel sump kit for a good starter place

@krickette5569

YES! I drive a diesel truck/RAM and we have this same valve. One of the first things we did was learn how to drain the water out through that valve. Also the Diesel Kleen fuel additive. We keep a bottle of it in the truck at all times and every time we fill up, we add a bottle. The reason Diesel's have problems with water in the fuel is because the engines produce water when hot fuel from the injectors is returned to the fuel tank; this produces water from condensation, which settles under the fuel. We bought our truck to pull a cattle trailer and a flat bed to help us out on the farm and we baby it more than we do anything else. It's irritating.

There should be baffles inside the tank to prevent the fuel sloshing round too much. Theoretically, you should be able to drive on any terrain or gradient, and not have such a problem. Your fuel tank would be way lower than half full when your fuel warning light comes on, which is when you would normally fill up. If there was water in the tank, then that may have caused you to break down.
@cliffordkinnear9705
@cliffordkinnear9705 Жыл бұрын
Their F250 has two fuel tanks. The RV weight pushes the rear of the truck down at an angle a few degrees. If they are using the rear tank and it gets to a 1/4 tank the pump may suck up air instead of fuel. They should use the rear/aft tank first then switch to the fwd/front tank, that would avoid any possible fuel pump cavitation in the rear tank.

I couldn't help but laugh when I heard, "Put the hood down. I don't ever want to see it up again". It's a diesel y'all. The hood needs to come up every time you stop for fuel to check the oil. So glad everything seems to be ready to roll. Stay safe and enjoy!!!

It being a diesel I'd keep a spare fuel filter in the truck at all times, if it feels like you're losing horsepower that is probably the culprit.

Gelling problems are typically caused by the effects of temperature on paraffin, a component of diesel fuel. Paraffin waxes are combustible, adding power when burned in the engine. However, when temperatures drop, diesel will start to solidify.

If you are going to camp a few times a year, vintage is a great option, if you’re going to travel across America, then vintage is NOT for you, you can believe us, or you can see the reality of your situation from the side of the road. “This isn’t even that old” it’s more than 30 years old, it’s old. I love your channel, I hate to be critical, but this has become adamantly obvious to everyone but you guys, sorry and good luck.

Why are you driving an old truck??? You guys ADMIT you know nothing about mechanics and you have time and time again bought old cars and RVs. That is your mistake, it has nothing to do with your Luck. Old stuff constantly needs to be worked on. That is not a bad thing, they can be fun to work on if you know what you are doing. If you have to call a mechanic every time you should not be doing it. You need to go get a brand spanking new pickup that can tow and then you might still make your schedule.

@@jamiel264 You may be right but based on views and what the average youtuber can make I think they could have afforded a lease. I also think they spent new car money fixing everything on the original rig, then another few thousand on the little red car, etc. Old cars can be very expensive too if you don't know how to do the work yourself. I personally do a lot of my work myself but as I get older I am fine with allowing more and more of it to be done by qualified mechanics, but that also means owning a newer car/truck makes more sense (cost wise).
@Theendlessadventure

But what a great way to learn about old vehicles, right?? Obviously we'd prefer not to break down, but we learn so much with every experience. For us, it's been worth it to be able to have vehicles we absolutely love.
@orlandoteixeira4446
@orlandoteixeira4446 Жыл бұрын
@@Theendlessadventure I agree to a point. When you want to learn about old vehicles that is great, but they can't be your primary car if you "have" to get somewhere. Also, to learn about them I would suggest you do all the work yourself, with the help of qualified folks, rather then just dropping them off for weeks at a mechanic. That is actually gold content on youtube if you check it out (fixing old cars on video). I am not sure how learning works now, I am over 50 and I learned by trial and error and friends when I was young. My point is while I understand your love of older cars/trucks and I think wanting to learn is awesome you cannot have that vehicle be your ride or die, cause more often then not you will be dead....on the side of a road....with no tools and weeks before you can get into a mechanic because you don't know how to fix (or even understand) what is broken.

If you have a "bad fuel problem" on a new diesel it's a $10,000 fix. Had it happen to my 2019 F-250. When Ford has to pull the cab off the chassis its bad news.
