The Revolutionary calendar brought a lot of fun for genealogist researchers, because parents in the 1790s started giving their children names from the new calendar and so you can sometimes come across some people named Radish, Lettuce and so on.

In Iran, we use solar hijri calendar. It starts on the March equinox and has 12 months. First six months have 31 days, then the following 5 months have 30 days and last month has 29 days except for every four or five years which has 30 days. In our calendar every 3 months fit in a season and new year starts with spring (northern hemisphere) which is beautiful and symbolic.This calendar has an interesting history. Thank you Joe for your informative videos and happy new year to all.

Vikash Verma Yes. Our current calendar starts when prophet Mohammad migrated from one major city to another city in 622 A.D. that’s why it’s called hijri which refers to migration. In 1976, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi changed the origin of the calendar to the beginning of Cyrus the Great's reign as the first year. Overnight, the year changed from 1355 to 2535. The change lasted until the revolution in 1979, at which time the calendar reverted to Solar Hijri. There is also a Jalali calendar which our current calendar is based on. Also there are some other ancient calendars in Iran’s history.

Joe, I was so glad to see you did a calendar video. I have been annoying my family with my idea for a calendar for several years now... It's simple 13 -28 day months, with an extra day at the end of the year. I was excited to see that the world calendar also employed this idea. It doesn't get a name like Mon - I'd call it Smithers day after myself but I'd be open to ideas... We'd also have to name a new month and figure out where to stick it, Probably in the middle. The nice thing is that every year and month start with a Monday. Likewise every year and month would end on a Sunday... It would save businesses money and really simplify life on so many levels... Anyway Love the videos, and OLF!

My favorite calendar fun fact is that the leap day used to be accomplished by making February 24th last 48 hours, rather than adding February 29th. This was called the bissextile, because it was a repeating of the sixth day before March (we'd call it the fifth day before March today, but the Romans counted their dates inclusively). I was hoping you'd mention this, but I guess there's a limit to how much information you can fit into one video.

Wow, I have actually never heard of that knuckle trick . . . that's way easier than going "30 days have September, April, June, and November. All the rest have 31, except February, which has 28, until the leap year makes it 29." in my head every time I have to figure out how many days are in a particular month. That's how they taught it in my school, as sort of a nursery rhyme, and to this day I have to use it to figure out which month has which number of days. Though I usually only have to do the first part to figure it out, it's still pretty embarrassing.

The month april wasn't named "mensis apru" for Aphrodite but "mensis aprilis". You missed one important point in our recent calendars as to why it has been messed up and that is that we do not keep track of a year with the calendar, but we try to keep the Vernal Equinox on or near March 21. That is why the Zodiac signs no longer align with their original calendar dates. If we were keeping track of how long it takes the Earth to go around the Sun, the Zodiac would match their original calendar dates and the Equinox would be in February somewhere. That is why they dropped 10 days from the calendar in 1752. Also, they moved the calendar to start in January instead of March, that is why Ben Franklin was born on January 6, 1705, which is now January 17, 1706.
@ffggddss
@ffggddss 5 жыл бұрын
And George Washington was born on Feb 11, 1731/2, Old Style, which is now Feb. 22, 1732, New Style. The 1752 change from Julian (O.S.) to Gregorian (N.S.) took place in Britain and its colonies & possesions (thus also in the American Colonies). Because it was done after another Gregorian exception year (1700), it was by then, 11 days dropped from the calendar, not 10. By the time Russia made the change, in the early 20th century, it was 13 days. Fred
@JoeDeglman
@JoeDeglman 5 жыл бұрын
Okay, for some reason I always had 10 stuck in my Head. It was Pope Gregory who dropped 10 days and adjusted their leap years after that, but England and the colonies had not done so until there were 11 days to drop. Thus the 11 day birthdate jump. I stand corrected.

If I could remake the calendar I'd go with 13 months of 28 days each, with an extra New Years Day at the end and a Leap 366th as needed. The idea behind it being that If Jan 1 is a Tuesday, Feb 1 is also a Tuesday, every 1st is a Tuesday. The 365th day would still be a day of the week so consecutive years wouldn't be equal, but a consistent month length would standardize a lot of membership type things. You'd also get to freak people out by occasionally having 13 Friday the 13ths in a single year!

Being alone sucks but so do people. I personally recommend dogs. You're still alone but you somehow kinda have company anyway, just enough to stave off depression and replace it at least partly with irritation and/or exasperation.

Fascinating, I had always thought that September on didn't line up with their obvious number because Julius and Augustus just added two months for themselves (thinking themselves important enough for that, I suppose). I didn't know the truth was subtler - the disorganized winter became two months at the start and Julius and Augustus later just renamed two other months.

And then you have the US with it´s weird marking on dates.... mm/dd/yyyy 12/31/2018.... the 12th day of the 31st month??? dd/mm/yyyy or 31/12/2018 is what most of the world uses.

Actually, in the Julian calendar, March 25 (lady day) was the official designation of new year, although January 1 was also recognized unofficially. For example, George Washington's birth date was written Feb. 11, 1731/2 in recognition of these two conventions. When the Gregorian calendar was adopted in England in 1752, Jan. 1 became the officially recognized date for new years day. Washington's birth date then became Feb. 22, 1732.
