Our Car Broke Down In A Remote Town!

What happens when your car or RV breaks down in a place without the normal supply of parts and repair facilities? We had our fuel pump go out in a small, remote town in southern Utah and I almost ended up with no transportation back to our camp trailer, where Linda was waiting for me, while all our food and equipment was in the car, which was stuck in the shop. There we're no rental cars available and a replacement part was 3 days away, but the mechanic was an electrical wizard and he got us back on the road. Thank you Lord!

I had to drop my tank 30 some miles from anywhere a couple years back. Siphon 30 gallons fuel. I had just filled up for a week in the forest hiking and fishing. I'll tell you the story sometime. Also blew out a couple sparkplugs miles from anywhere but I had the repair kit with me. The best thing you can have with you is mechanical know how and a decent set of tools. Get yourselves back on the road and try to stay out of trouble!

Don't forget your fuel pump relay, it's under the hood driver side right by the front window. There are two of the same relays so if your fuel pump relay goes out you can take the other relay out and it will plug into where your fuel pump relay is.

My history with GM vehicles included many fuel pump replacements, a devil of a job. Then I realized that the major cause of early fuel pump failure was the inline fuel filter, located on the frame rail. I change the fuel filters on my vehicles now every year. Have not replaced a pump since.

I might suggest getting an OBDII diagnostic scanner... Plugs into the port under the dash on the left side and has a bluetooth or WiFi interface to an app on your phone (some are only Android compatible). Some of the basic ones are pretty cheap. Might help diagnose problems you could run into on an older car (OBDII existed back to 1996 or so).
@jjm5714
@jjm5714 3 жыл бұрын
I used to do this for a living. I still do it for a living helping my students with their cars. For around 35 to $50 you can get a cheap fuel pressure gauge and actually test your fuel pressure. if they don't stock the fuel pump it may be because you have a flex fuel instead of a standard fuel system. Flex fuel will have a yellow gas cap it's known as e85 systems. You're right the throttle position sensor should not fix a fuel problem. You have an electronic throttle pedal which send your input request to the computer. the computer actuates the motor on the throttle body and the throttle position sensors there's two of them relay their position to the computer. Both sensors give readings they may match each other or they may be ascending and descending and overlap at a given point. There's two different TPS logics used by car manufacturers. The computer that has two points of reference for exactly the throttle position so that it can maintain a safe engine speed. You should also have a cheap $50 pocket scanner which will give you a code which will give you a clue of what the computer saw. Remember computers are limited they're using artificial intelligence such as sensors instead of eyeballs. You may be dealing with cause and effect so not always a code is the problem but it may be the result of what the computer saw.
@gonagain
@gonagain 3 жыл бұрын
That's right. The code may just lead you to the system that has the problem and not to the actual module itself. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Joseph!

Only install a Delco fuel pump in a GM product. If you try and save money by installing a "Will Fit" it may not even start the first time. Fuel pump? As a retired Rural US Mail carrier I have smacked the fuel tank with the side of a hammer many times over the years to get one more last start to get me home to swap cars and finish the route. I cut a fuel pump access door in the trunk of 3 mail cars over the years and resealed the holes with butyl tape a 6 self tapping screws and a piece of sheet metal. Today I carry a spare pump in my truck now that I'm retired when I go boondocking on deer hunts. I also carry a proven (used) ECM MODULE and have my cables and deep cell batteries (for the camper) in the event of No spark issues. The reason your new TPS fixed the problem had to do with a failing pump that was overheating. Once it cooled off it would restart but eventually whatever caused it to overheat reared its head and started the process all over again. My last pump failure wasn't a failure to proceed but a "I can't get over 40 mph" issue. I tested the pressure and it only had 8 lbs of line pressure. Everyone online says you can't start a fue.inj'd engine with less than 15lbs of line pressure. Well I have proven a Chevy Big Block 454 will pull a trailer 40 mph on 8 lbs !

Hi Bill! When the mechanic pointed out that the connectors didn't connect, I thought I was sunk. I couldn't call Linda back at camp (no cell signal) and it was too far to walk. No rental cars in town... I was worried. I’ve just watched a vid posted by Jim Holmes on one of his trips in our outback. I’ve been to most places in the vid, but it is a very good example of our inland regions. And they encountered a rare event out there - RAIN! That is one thing that I never experienced out there, 😂. True story. They stop at a “lookout” located on what is called a ‘jump up’ - arise of land in the middle of nowhere, 😂. Not many hills and no mountains out there. Here s the link for your perusal, if it is inappropriate, please delete this comment. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKbPnKluarGLgrM Cheers guys.

Well at least there wasn't 2 feet of snow on the ground and you could still drive it at least enough to get it out to cicilization LOL ( where were you when I needed a new steering knuckle and spindle to fit about a 1952 willy's wagon LOL, shoulda had one of them in your pocket for me LOL) funny you should put this video out when I have a project going for making up my new going to the way off woods buggy, I'm in the process of DE- computerizing an old 1988 ford (I'm a ford guy) f150 extended cab short bed, I'm getting rid of EVERYTHING computer and smog related and extra crap under the hood that makes working on it a pain in the a-- related, it will be running a simple as dirt 2 barrel(I actually have 2 of them so one is going into storage in the truck just in case) carb off of an old 1973 torino I scrapped out along with a stock 2 barrel cast iron intake manifold off of the 351 windsor from the 73 torino (the engine in the truck is also a 351 windsor), it will have 3 fuel pumps (the one in each fuel tank plus the high pressure one on the frame rail so all 3 would have to quit to leave you stranded), I will be using a GM HEI. type distributor that is dirt simple and very easily repaired because there is basically only a few parts that can go bad to make it quit working (they sell these as a drop in option at places like summit racing), the module, the in cap coil, rotor and cap itself (but I will be keeping in the truck another entire ready to go distributor and plug wires so I will have another complete ignition system to go, why not they are actually fairly cheap so I bought 2 while I was at it), I'm also stripping the truck of every single thing that isn't needed to make it function, along with stripping the interior of carpet and all that crap so that when you get into with muddy shoes from out playing around you can simply just hose it out, then it's getting a 4 inch lift and 33x12.50x15 Milestar Patogonia mud tires (already have those waiting to go on it along with the lift kit), and I have a 12,000 pound winch going on each end (already have those and the new heavy duty bumpers I made waiting to go on it), I have a few other things I'll be doing to the truck but that's the bulk of it, I have my 2001 f150 and my 2011 Toyota RAV 4 and my 2000 Caravan, my 2001 f150 that I've had since nearly new and now has right at 106,000 miles on it hasn't skipped a beat in the 95,000 miles I've put on it and is just now starting to need a clutch and I just did the breaks on it for the second go round (it's a manual trans so it's easy on breaks and I am easy on clutches ) but I kid you not that truck still runs like a top and has never had the plugs replaced or literly nothing done to it other than oil changes and the cruise controll canceling switch ($20) and had to replace the idler arm (about $175 installed by someone else and included an alignment), that truck has been just wonderfull and the little 4.6 triton in it gets right around 20 mpg out on the highway if you hold it at 65mph or less, and with the 5 speed it aint no dog neither it will actually flat moove because it will put the speedo right on 100mph without any real problem or needing a mile to do it, but it like my other cars are all computer controlled nightmares if they quit you in the middle of nowhere, there is enough to go wrong on a dirt simple car let alone all the computer crap so I just don't trust them, I want dirt simple and easy so some bailing wire and duct tape will most likely at least get you back to civilization, so I'm basiclly building up something relating to what my old willy's was (a vehicle I actually really wish I still had), a going to the woods buggy, but if I get out in the middle of nowhere and I break anoth steering knuckle I'm never going to leave home and go to the woods again LOL, I just hope I can get back to that project soon because right now I'm so stinking busy trying to get my new garage/shop building wired for electric (doing it myself) along with my other little shed for the same, becuase in about a week and a half the concrete guys are going to be puoring the concrete slab in the building along with some walkway and other cement work, and I still have open projects at my other place, so to say the least I'm up to my neck in projects, I just hope I can get away for a bit of hunting season this fall, So I don't feel sorry for you breaking down at least you get to be out goofing off LOL, take care my friend....Jeff

Jeff, I like the way you're doing the build on the Ford to make it simple and reliable and easy to maintain. One of my daughters and I rebuilt the engine on her first car (a 1980s Nissan) and it took one full day to label all the emission control wires and hoses so I can relate to getting rid of the electronics! At least the new cars don't have a bird's nest like that anymore. I hope you get your shop done in time to enjoy some summer adventures.

Valid question. Your referring to the fuel pump? Because they're over $200 each and they usually last about 100,000 miles so one extra is enough. Replacing the throttle position sensor is very easy, but the fuel pump isn't.
@arnoldseay9118
@arnoldseay9118 4 жыл бұрын
Fuel pumps seem to be a problem with GM products. Probably other cars too. The important thing is keep the fuel tank more than 1/4 full because the pump is cooled by the fuel. Also important is change the fuel filter often. I replaced my fuel pump with a Carter pump because so many people had problems with the Goodwrench pump but the electrical connector had to be changed to match the fuel pump. The other advantage is the Carter pump was about 1/3 the price. I’m not advertising Carter but I never had a problem again.
@gonagain
@gonagain 4 жыл бұрын
I'll remember that about the Carter because I intend to buy a spare. My "Empty" is always the 1/2 full mark.
@arnoldseay9118
@arnoldseay9118 4 жыл бұрын
Gonagain if your fuel tank reads half full when it’s empty I suspect it was the wrong fuel pump for your vehicle since the float is part of the fuel pump. I bought mine at Schucks Orielly but any larger auto parts store should stock that fuel pump. Mine came with the wiring harness but I had to cut the plug off my old fuel pump and wire it onto the new pump.
@gonagain
@gonagain 4 жыл бұрын
That's what needed to be down to the new pump that I supplied to the mechanic. No, when I said 1/2 full was my empty I meant that I never let it get lower than that. As you probably know, these pumps are cooled by being immersed and it's not good to let the fuel level get too low. I'll be cutting a hole in the floor so that the tank doesn't need to be dropped in the future! I'll video that so you'll see how it goes. Should be some interesting language...

Don't you be dissing Toyota. You should get a Toyota Tundra! Or a Sequoia. No problems for 20 years. :) Why do they put the fuel pump in the tsnks now?
@gonagain
@gonagain 4 жыл бұрын
Oh, I'm not dissing Toyota, those are great vehicles! The fuel pumps for modern, fuel injected cars put out high pressure at around 60psi, unlike the old ones that mounted on the engine at 4-5psi, so they put them in the tank to let the fuel keep them cool and wet lubed. That's why you shouldn't let your fuel level go below a half a tank if possible. I just wish there was a trap door located above the pump so that the tank wouldn't need to be dropped.
