We had only just collected our Defender after 90 days apart when we had a failure of the rear differential.
Fortunately we were able to perform a field repair then limp to the amazing Land Rover Worx in Gordon's Bay South Africa.
As always when things go wrong on our journey we are exposed to the kindness and generosity of the people we meet.
This is a technical episode as we repair and service our Defender.
If enjoy our videos and would like to support to the work we do in creating them we'd love to have you join the team by becoming a patreon and ensuring the videos and journey continue.

Join us as we travel the world overland, exploring the cultures and traditions of all the countries we visit.
In our Land Rover Defender camper which is our full time home we will take you rock climbing, hiking and exploring across all the continents on this planet.

When a vehicle is as travelled and as old as yours, regardless of what make it is, it is going to have wear and tear. Especially when it has done some quite extreme off-roading on more than one continent and being shipped countless times. The only vehicle anyone should ever get, is one that is suitable for the tasks intended and one that feels right for the purchaser/owner. No make of vehicle is infallible and all have their issues and ALL will suffer from wear and tear. I'm glad that you got your Land Rover fixed without too much bother and gave it a good service at the same time. I wish you continued happy and safe travels!

Now that is the most sensible and intelligent comment I've read in a long time. Thank you for that great insight. I have owned many different makes and models of 4x4 over the past 24 years and all of them have been driven hard and required regular maintenance and had issues. It's absolutely normal. In fact it was our Toyota 80 Series of ten years that gave us the most issues of any vehicle we've owned 😉

Consider swapping that allen bolt back out for the right flanged bolt when possible , the allen bolt only has small area under the head and could come loose, maybe drop the prop and check it after some miles.

Hear hear. The Land Rover community is something special and I am so honoured and happy to be a part of that. My father in-law was a Toyota man (Land Cruiser all the way), giving me grieve about driving a Defender. But he admitted that the Series and Defender owners were a special community, something Toyota never had and probably never will.

My first time ever in a Landover also involved a broken drive shaft to the rear div. South lilongwe national park in Zambia, I hitched a ride with a 80yr old German lady that travelled solo in the area since her husband passed away the year before. So this motorcyclist was lying on his back tying up the shaft with some random material with Lions roaring around in the not to far off distance. What a great experience that was! Got out great on front wheels drive. Wish you wonderful travels in Africa! Oh, it's newtons, not kilo newtons for the drain plug 😉

That was awesome, enjoyed the video. Hope you have a wonderful time and enjoy it here in my home country. Just want to clear up a thing or two, the sump plug torque couldn't of been 23 kilo Newton, that is 2.3 tons. 23 Newton meter is more like it, that is 2.3 kg pressure on a 1 meter lever 😉. Maybe I missed it, the only thing that could of caused that bolt on the diff pinion to snap like that is that it was over tighten. The bolt did seem to be on the slightly short side (not that bad though) but won't cause it to snap, it would cause the thread to strip out. Looking forward to watch your next video.

If your mechanic thinks it's normal for the bronze bushing to turn on the stub he's wrong. That bush should be an interference fit on the stub axle, you'll find it will have a hairline crack letting it rotate . The end float on the cv is set with shims under the drive flange cap, if the end float is too large the cv will foul the inside of the swivel housing when the wheels are on lock, if it's too tight you will wear the bronze Bush, the end float will need checking if the drive flange or other parts are changed. I'd suggest watching some of the Britanica restorations videos on YT for maintenence tips and tutorials.

Wondering if it would have been different had you just set the parking brake and put the T case in neutral would it have made a difference? I would think that chocking all 4 wheels would keep it from moving. But, I can see how being in a shipping containers on a wave pitching ship could be a roungh ride! I have manual lockout hubs on all axle hubs of my Extreme 4X4, and can disconnect my entire drivetrain so I can flat tow it like a 4 wheel trailer and the differentials never even turn with all 4 corners dialedl out. Making self recovery a lot easier at times. With your luck, maybe I need to build you a fat tire creeper so you can get under the LR in the dirt!

@Eastbound

Everything you claim about Landrover family also applies to the Landcruiser family. I have my '93 Troopy for 22 years now and travelled 60K in Africa (NL to RSA and back) with zero break downs other than broken leafsprings and in the total 22 years I haven't had as much trouble with the car as you guys in a few weeks. We travelled in Africa together with LR's as well. Allmost every evening they put their coveralls on to repair what broke during the day while we watched and were sipping our Gin Tonic's. I totally understand your love for the car but when to go to really remote places in Africa like traversing the Sahara or visit lake Turkana, you need to have a very reliable vehicle. If you loose confidence, it will hold you back and you won't leave the "beaten track" anymore. Seen it happen to often! Happy Travels and take care..
