Hi Andrew-I have done your experiment in reverse (with my own outright purchases).Ran many Volvos for years and ended up in a V90 PHEV with careful driving 50 miles range quite possible and all weekends are electric-worked it off a 3 pin for 12 months did 30K miles averaged 127mpg..swopped to a Taycan CT 4S 240 miles in summer 200 winter-home charger essential but a quick pitstop for fast-ish charging-you dont often get power as advertised-sorts you on a long journey.I wouldnt go back to ICE for work.....but I have a JCW MINI for fun!!

Went light; swapped a very good Alpina XD3 for a 5-door Up! GTI and a 250bhp Alpine A110: small, very light, great power to weight ratios, great fun.

I recently got rid of my VW electric UP which was a company car. I did 11,000 miles in it without a home charger and my nearest charger was 10 miles away. Probably the most painful 11,000 miles 😅. EVs are still for the people who can charge at home.

Great podcast Gents. This topic is such a relevant one for everyone, with lots of those with a company car a few years into their EV experience. I started with a BMW i3s, and the range anxiety was greatest in the run up to delivery! It's still a pain to have to wait on 50KW chargers if your journey is not on a primary route even with a larger range iX3 now. As Dan said, the convenience of charging at home and having a warmed (or cooled) car to step into each morning is fabulous.

Same here. Got an i4 e40 and have driven to Italy, Spain and to the Czech Republic several times now. I do 25'000 miles a year and charge mostly at home, but when I travel further, I use the Ionity network exclusively and it works just fine (at around €0.45/kWh). You never find yourself charging for longer than 15-20' at a time, which gives my car an additional 200 miles of range. That's another 3h of driving and at that point I'll want a wee break, a coffee and check my emails anyway. BTW: Got nothing against ICE cars (still have an M2 Comp, manual) but as a daily, it makes no sense anymore for me. So much more comfort, in every way. I agree with Dan however, for the weekend/fun drive, I still prefer a manual ICE car.

I wish the statement of 911's being invisible was true! Sadly jealous and/or inconsiderate types everywhere, my 'crappy old 996' has been egged and used as a parking detector, is going to cost £2k to put right next year before sale.... Love the podcast chaps, great listening whilst busy working :)

For people with access to home charging and driving mainly short distances, EVs make sense. For the rest of us, not so much... at least not until things change drastically, with solid improvements in real world (not claimed) range, much faster charging times, and far more public charging availability.

I disagree and agree with Andrew's point here. I live in Switzerland and have driven to Italy, Spain and to the Czech Republic several times now in my EV. I do 25'000 miles a year and charge mostly at home, but when I travel further, I use the Ionity network exclusively and it works just fine (at around €0.45/kWh). I have never charged for longer than 15-20' at a time, which gives my car an additional 200 miles of range. That's another 3h of driving and totally fine for me. I'll want a wee break, a coffee and check my emails anyway. In addition to that, it's simply much cheaper to run... On average it's €4.00 per 100 kms, which is amazing for a car with >300hp, air suspension and all creature comforts. Oh, and the first service will be due at around 50'000 miles. Probably just brake fluids and a few filters. No oil, no brake discs or pads and other stuff an ICE car will regularly need.

Th one thing missing is that an EV is Twice the Price, Twice the Weight and only after4-5 Years is it Carbon neutral , but by 10 Years Yorkshire Battery probably 60% of its Original life meaning your Mileage is Probably Halved! You also need a Driveway to charge up and generally the Middle to Lower Class don't have them. I won't be Buying One!
@patrickf2386
@patrickf2386 Ай бұрын
@@markwalton8644 You are entirely misinformed! EV's are neither twice as heavy, nor are they carbon neutral after 4-5 years only. It's somewhere between 30-50k miles, depending on battery size. And battery life is somewhere between 150-250k miles (for Lithium) and over 500k for the newer LFP ones.

@markwalton8644 Ай бұрын
@patrickf2386 4-5 Years at an Average of let's say 12k a year over 4 Years Is 48k. Most Batteries are down to 80% at this point. So let's say the Battery started at 250miles, then the maximum mileage is only 200miles after 5 Years of Motoring. New Batteries are an unknown quantity. Yes they will last longer and don't use chemicals which are as bad but they consume more Electricity to Produce which Negates the Environmental factor. China will continue to use Coal Fired Powerstations to Produce them!! Meaning they are an Extra 15% Carbon. Until we Pull out of China and Produce with Renewable Resources rhen Battery Power is no better than Petrol powered Cars
@patrickf2386
@patrickf2386 Ай бұрын

I’m lucky to have access to 3 cars. A VW eUp for around town and commute to work, which is great fun hustling along country roads at modest speeds, and a hoot deploying all 82 bhp and instant torque away from roundabouts …. well up to 40 mph that is. Share a BMW iX3 for longer journeys and find charging network much improved in past 12 months. You definitely need home charging to make this work. And for the weekend … 718 Boxster GTS 4.0. Pretty much all bases covered.

good question; a friend got himself a swift sport - 1.4 turbo, 140 hp, ~1050 kgs of weight; he loves it.(edit. with a software and some springs, it can become quite the backroad little weapon)

I went through this recently whilst looking for a runabout. UP GTI was top of my list - Nice car but a little subdued. I've had a 2019 Fiesta ST and 2018 Cooper S and didn't want to go back. Ended up with an Abarth 595 and it's hilarious, but if I had to daily it I might have preferred the UP.

I've done 50k miles in my Tesla 3 without installing a charger. I just use the 13Amp granny cable charger that came with the car. Gives me around 9 miles of charge an hour. 8 mile commute, car normally sits between 20% and 80% charge. Slow but cheap. Car is like a really fast microwave, no personality but does everything it needs to quietly and comforatably. Bought it for company car tax purposes, but will replace with B7 RS4 when the time comes.

So your commute is shorter than mine and I cycle. Is this the only circumstances a model 3 makes sense?? My cycle ride is free, better for the planet and my wallet and my health. Just food for thought, for me EV's don't satisfy the car enthusiast nor the environmentalist in me. God speed tho, enjoy your cars :))

It makes sense. A 911 turbo most times on the road you cannot use the performance. As someone that has owned fast cars and bikes there is nothing more frustrating than only being able to use a fraction of the power basically all the time. A standard 911 is still a very fast car but one you can use more of the time

From your feedback on EV's, it cements my point that there is no need for very expensive EV's... Small cheap run around EV's have a place for town driving, something like the BMW i3 for instance. There is really no point of very heavy £100k plus EV cars IMHO, those that lose 60% of their value in 2 years!!

As someone with a lot of ICE cars I've always been pretty hostile to EVs: heavy, expensive, too many systems/"driver aids", indicative of the growing restriction on the motorist etc, and I still think govt mandated pressures on people to switch are predictably stupid and short termist. However, a compelling lease deal has got me in to an i7, and existing alongside Petrol (and the odd diesel) in the "accumulation" I find the i7 fits pretty seemlessly. Home charging is key (I went for Anderson because it looks nicer and the cable is hidden), and for most journeys if you're starting with a full "tank" you've got enough capacity - it'll do 250 to 300 miles on a full charge from what I've experienced so far, depending on conditions and how you drive. As you chaps covered, in most cases a brief stop can get you a 20% boost (I stopped the other day, around 8 minutes, charged at around 200kw/h, which made a material difference and bought me some flexibility). The car itself is extremely impressive in many ways, the only really notable and fundamental weakness is just how insanely heavy it is. If I only had one car and did longer journeys I wouldn't go EV, but for 90% of what I do it's surprising how completely unproblematic it is.

It would be NICE to actually hear some engines for a while without the hyperbole. I'm too old and stupid to invent it myself but PLEASE is there an app or a way of muting commentators? I live in a bus in nz so hopping on a jet to go be there is sadly way beyond my means. Ahem. Sorry. Thank you.
