Hi Dan/Andrew, when you’re doing a long segment like this, perhaps you could put up a picture of each generation on the tv between you both whilst you’re speaking?

I've owned a 930 3.3, an X50 993TT and have driven most of the others. I'm not as keen on the latest, hyperfast automatics, but what a lineage. The 993 remains the most complete performance car I've ever owned. It was incredible.

My old man had a 964 (or 965?) 3.3 Turbo back in the early 2000s, I loved that car, great looks, air cooled, what a car - that's my pick.

My favourite car magazine article ever was the twin test between the 993turbo and the f355.
@ZondaF3553 ай бұрын
I agree here! That article was ans still is magical. 993s and 355s are still magical yet I don't feel the same or even close to 992 296 GTB. The magic just isn't the same
@jameswillard13 ай бұрын
@@ZondaF355have you driven a 296? I have a 992 GT3 and a 993 Turbo and am not a Ferrari fan whatsoever but that car is epic by any standards.

It would be great if you could talk more about Porsches. It is only every episode lately.

Jesus, for years I’ve aimed for a Turbo S(Money no object GT2). To hear it’s not the fun one is a real eye opener. Great podcast guys 👏🏽

997.2 Turbo S is the prefect blend; performance, size, reliability, rarity and fun.

I have absolutely no issue with the discussion about 911s. But, you guys are great at rational, informed conversation about interesting cars. Porsches are excellent cars, but they are not interesting.

People need to appreciate how fast a 996 Turbo was at the time. In an era when the Carrera came with an n/a engine with 300 or 320 hp and you could get a Turbo with 444 hp that is a huge delta. So while a Subaru STi or Evo could give a regular 996 a run for its money both in a straight line and on a twisty road you had a Turbo trim with almost 40% more power and even more of a torque delta. This is unlike today where all 911s that aren't GT3s are basically a quite similar formula just depends on how much of it you want to pay for.

The 993 turbo s had 430 bhp, same as the power pack for the regular 993 turbo.
@benzinapaul74163 ай бұрын
The 964 (965) Turbo 3.3 and 3.6 were very different cars, I remember the 3.6 was panned at the time as being to hard, too edgy whereas the 3.3 964 was almost the ultimate 930 5 Speed and to my eyes the 964 Turbo looks fantastic, much better than the narrow bodied regular Carreras
@phillsmith92553 ай бұрын
I think the current 992 sport classic is the closest you'll get to the original 911 turbo, rear wheel drive, manual with a detuned turbo s engine.

I'd be tempted to gat a 991.2 T or 992 T and take it to Litchfield for an upgrade.

I once almost bought a 991 turbo s. Everything looked good, was about to the seal the deal. Asked the seller to rev it up at the parking lot just so i know how it sounded like. He revved it, I was horrified of the sound which sounded worse than my $5000 daily beater. Ran and bought a carrera for around the same money. I never got the point of a turbo..had 981 2.7 3.4, 718 4.0, various versions of 991.1 3.8, 991.2 3.0 carreras, gts, gt3. gt3rs etc....never a turbo. Doesnt look or sound as good (turbo side inlets break up the sleek fat hips and side profile, the spoilers are semi aggressive, the front end looks sleepy), why would anyone need more power on the street? I cant remember the last time I redlined a carrera, only the RS because you need to chase that sound. Perhaps would try a targa in the future for the sake of looks over performance, but still have yet to find a reason for a turbo s
@paulgarrad15813 ай бұрын
You were about to buy one, all looked good, but you didn't like the sound. Then you state they're pointless and don't look good. Seems very contradictory.

The 992 Turbo S was initially fitted with the Sports suspension as standard with the 'helper' springs, but now that's optional. Which suspension setup was installed in the test against the Artura and Vantage?

Grumpy man time. You spent the entire time saying it's not meant to be the most engaging 911 it's the luxury fastest point to point car then finished with let's hope it's more engaging. In my head if you only can have one fast car and you need to take your kids to school in it then go to work in the snow you get a turbo s. If you have the funds to have an all weather car and a fun weekend car then you get a turbo s and a manual gt3 touring in green with silver wheels
@EvoraGT4303 ай бұрын
Or if you want really engaging, get a Lotus Elise/Evora, Caterham or Aerial Atom/Nomad. Porsches are nowhere near in terms of engagement.

up until 997, turbo was a nice car to have; after that, it became an overpowered dragster for those with fragile egoes and small...yeeap. If you are a true enthusiast and have the means for any new 911, the turbo should never be on your list.
