It's worth having breakdown cover - I was driving a Focus diesel up the M5 last year when the turbo died (avoid the 1.6l Focus turbo diesels). I only had local recovery, which only covers up to 10 miles away from home, with the RAC - it cost me £145 to get it towed 45 miles back. But they got to me in about 30 minutes. The "proper" AA and RAC vans have a towing dolly stowed in the back (it's a really clever arrangement), so it is possible for them to tow you back without having to call out a relay truck - they only usually do this if your car is too big, or 4wd, etc. It seems you were unlucky with the wait, etc., but glad you could laugh about it.

I've just bought a focus 1.6 turbo diesel, but i spoke to a courier who is running one that's done 335k so there's good and bad I suppose. Also I can fix most things if they go wrong, but in general all cars made in the last 10 years or so weren't made to last. When older cars would run for 20 years plus, a lot now are throw away before they reach 15 years old.

Mowersandstuff I don't know if they've "fixed" the problem with more recent versions, but they (with the French, Peugeot if I recall, engines) have a known problem where excess carbon build up clogs the filter in the turbo oil supply pipe, killing the turbo. At a minimum, you have to replace the turbo (£250+ reconditioned) and the feed and return oil pipes (something like £125 - the turbo reconditioners will not warranty the turbo without these, you cannot simply clean them), doing an engine engine flush, and an oil change. Some also say you should drop the sump and manually clean inside as well. All prices are plus labour, etc. It may be caused by diesel injector seals, so these are a recommended change. At the minimum, it's recommended to do an oil and filter change every 5000 miles on these. The focus I drove ('05 model) had a recon turbo, pipes, and oil change done, it was sold and the last I heard the new owner was having problems with the turbo around 3 months later.

The one I've just bought is a 06 131k all seems ok, I just hope I've bought a good un. If anything went wrong I would repair it myself or cut my loses, I'll just see how it goes and thanks for the advice, did you have any warning before your turbo went?.
