Suie Jung Thompson moved to Aotearoa from China as a young child. She now has mokopuna who are fluent speakers of te reo Māori and stand strong in their culture.
As part of our dual whakapapa series looking at Māori with two minority cultural identities, Ohinga spoke to Maia and Zen Te Hira about the impact of their nan on their upbringing.
We always knew we had Chinese whakapapa, and we lived both Māori and Chinese customs.”
This is part of our reo Māori series, Ohinga, created by Mahi Tahi with funding from Te Māngai Pāho. Stay tuned for a new episode every week.

Good job! 👍 Gonna get a tiny bit political, but the grandma truly understands the importance of indigenous language and culture! Something the CCP doesn't give a rats ass about 😂
