This talk by author, activist, teacher and dissident Chris Hedges at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, NY is about his new book, “Our Class: Trauma and Transformation in an American Prison,” released on October 19, 2021 by publisher Simon & Schuster.
Hedges has taught courses in drama, literature, philosophy, and history since 2013 in the college degree program offered by Rutgers University at East Jersey State Prison and other New Jersey prisons. In his first class at East Jersey State Prison, where students read and discussed plays by Amiri Baraka and August Wilson, among others, his class set out to write a play of their own. In writing the play, Caged, which would run for a month in 2018 to sold-out audiences at The Passage Theatre in Trenton, New Jersey, and later be published, students gave words to the grief and suffering they and their families have endured, as well as to their hopes and dreams. The class’s artistic and personal discovery, as well as transformation, is chronicled in heart-breaking detail in Our Class. This book gives a human face and a voice to those our society too often demonizes and abandons. It exposes the terrible crucible and injustice of America’s penal system and the struggle by those trapped within its embrace to live lives of dignity, meaning, and purpose.
Recorded at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, NY on June 28, 2021.

I have watch Chris for years and believe in his honest anger at the injustices of this world and his courage to stand up to them and try to bring them forwrd for all to see. What a wonderful insightful speech. Most memorable are ; the prisons are full of poets; prisons are plantations; and of course the 14 year old boy, his best student, trumped up charge, spending all day in the hold, a system hoping no-one would witness their compounding of a lie, and one man awaits to witness it. Well done Chris for being there. I was with you in spirit. 👍

What this video shows me is we are a throw away society, we ball up and throw away human being as easily as Kleenex after cleaning our noses. All the wasted human potential in those prisons locked up. It truly saddens me and also angers me. But also renews my faith in mankind in the altruism that exist in the human spirit shown by these men and women who are in the most dire of human condition's, imprisonment. God bless you Mr Hedges and all the nameless faceless human beings who are imprisoned.

Chris is a true model of a man that has seen the brutality of many things. This topic, a for profit judicial system which incentives other poor and working class folks to lock up other poor, oppressed and working class, addicted I too have been through . Sentenced to 3 & a half years at the age of 18. A child. It took me years to recognize how traumatic it was. They pencil whip you.. I was in fact charged w/ false imprisonment . I was innocent.. If you claim to be a Christian, or if you are truly seeking genuine change. "You can not be luke warm" on this issue . If your a Cop, an activist or a inmate PLEASE recognize we all must work to STOP this for profit judicial system. I'm begging to see we are all human. Forget politics. This is the 100th or so time I've turned to this brave man's words looking for strength to carry on. I've turned to this lecture before and each time forget, at the end he speaks of Haiti; my heart's first home. There I have the honour of being allowed to return and continue my efforts in teaching children how to grow food. Though the men who watch over me are called gangsters for 8 yrs I've watched them maintain a relative peace in the area they still hold. Their leader has the heart of a lion and the mind of a diplomat. I know he is hope for Haiti.

Where the hell is Chris Hedges now? ... Why hasn't he publicly commented on the trucker's convoy? ... He's always been skeptical that something like this could happen - and now he's incognito ... He was once an a fearless journalist ... he has spoken on the importance of grass roots activism many times ... He has consistently encouraged us to resist solely for its own sake ... In a 2020 interview, he said he told indigenous pipeline protesters to "park your cars in their path, remove the engines and walk away" (paraphrasing)... The coverage given to the convoy by his employer - RT, has also been minimal and superficial ... He has also chosen not to publicly comment on the WEF and the book THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION ... Also, after a 2014 speech he was asked to comment on 9/11 and blew it off by saying "Bush was probably just asleep at the wheel" ... And I've never heard him even mention Dick Cheney ... he's mentioned Liz Cheney, but not her father ... I once admired him but now I despise him for deserting us at a most critical moment in human history ... He's no longer on my list of fearless progressive journalists ... In no particular order: - Glenn Greenwald - Aaron Mate - Max Blumenthal - Abby Martin - Ben Norton - Jimmy The list goes on, but Chris is no longer on it!

that was painful to listen to. I spent 50 days in a county jail, relatively cushy to what's talked about here and that was really disturbing. One of my cell mates was really cool and the look on his face when he was told he was being transfered to a jail he'd been in before, the stories of saran wrap placed on the walls to commit suicide with, and then the other cell mate who was transferred to another unit and committed suicided by falling headfirst from the top tier. It goes on and, I learned to respect the food you have or are given and not waste it.

He's the only man of god I've ever listened to who did not try to manipulate me in some fashion. Which is crazy, because there are soooo many "men of god" who do not serve god. If there really is a god, there is only one way for us to serve him/her/it, and that's by serving the poor-Chris serves the poor, and our MSM makes him suffer for it.

That sounds as if the poor will always be with us. Should the poor be simply served, or should they be strengthened, and what is the responsibility of the poor to themselves and society? I haven't watched the video yet. Does Hedges cover these questions?
@marygard4608
@marygard4608 2 жыл бұрын
@@siriuslyspeaking9720 I truly am sorry for being glib, but finding ways for the poor to serve whom? I'm guessing you see people in need as oweing a debt to those who serve them. As a theologian, Chris sees the poor as Jesus Christ in disguise. I am an atheist, and not afraid to say it. But I think Chris is onto something. You, I think, are not.
@siriuslyspeaking9720
@siriuslyspeaking9720 2 жыл бұрын
@@marygard4608 I'm posing the question of whether the "poor" are convinced that they need to be served'? That they have no personal agency, to do anything for themselves or to contribute to society, and thus serve others - not just be served. Poor is relative, in this world of widespread disparities. The poor in the wealthiest nations today don't live at the same standard as the poor in other countries, and we are talking about poor people in a very wealthy country. Has Hedges really stumbled onto something, or is he just expressing centuries or millennium old, rhetoric that humanity has yet to put into actions.

Speaking as a devout/passionate atheist, I don't understand why spell 'god' in the lower case. Sometimes, they do that when referring to the native world's Old Religions' deities in plural, as 'gods,' which is also contemptuous and stupid, but why refer to a single deity with the lower case, I don't understand.
