Award winning journalist Chris Hedges speaks with Renovatio editor-in-chief Hamza Yusuf on the deadly sin of wrath and the underlying dark forces of American society today.
THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS, A SPECIAL RENOVATIO SERIES HOSTED BY HAMZA YUSUF
Hamza Yusuf converses with scholars, leaders, and writers to explore one of religion's most enduring conceptual frameworks, the Seven Deadly Sins. These compelling conversations shed light on how the sins manifest themselves within us, illustrate their devastating consequences on our culture, and elucidate their corresponding virtues for all of us who struggle with sin.

Never encountered Hamza Yusuf before but have long been an admirer of Hedges. Really enjoyed this conversation between two highly knowlegeable, wise and compassionate scholars. This kind of content should be compulsory listening for all politicians. Though, on second thought, I doubt many of them would understand any of it.

This is such an insightful conversation. I love the part where Chris Hedges mentions how jobs in the modern age can hinder self actualization and that leads to anger and self loathing. Especially bc your job is such a massive part of your identity. Stands in contrast to those living in poorer countries who seemingly don’t have much from a materialistic perspective but also aren’t consistently compromising internal values (via corp jobs) to live.

Thank you for providing the bridge, the language to express ourselves. Almost all in society have never been exposed to this, and the inability to express our wrath and rage is easily turned by insidious forces to the wrong ends. If you're working two or three jobs, or if you have no job and a family to keep, how do you find the time and stable calm mental state to read, discuss, develop and make any sense of the self and of events that are all pervasive in the modern world?

There is an emptiness in the lives of so many in the western culture because they have lost or never gained that spiritual well which you discussed. I think conversations like these are important because people, especially the educated type that fancies themselves "rational," tend to dismiss the works of theologians as being just brainwashing non-sense, and that's not true at all. Many great thinkers have developed their ideas through the prism of religion. Yes, even in the catholic church!

All poverty is relative: relative to the prevailing costs of living and material requirements and norms of the society, and relative in class terms, because rich and poor are correlative terms. To say that poor people have no reason to be angry because they aren't all that poor is a very privileged position, and it ignores the class relationship of exploitation and market transaction redistribution of income which produces poverty, and the snobbery and police and cultural discrimination which follows. It also ignores 56 consecutive decades of stagnant real wages under the neoliberal regime of austerity policies, market liberalisation and destruction of union rights. And of course the huge losses of freedom that results from inability to pay, debt and financial desperation in a capitalist economy, both freedom to and freedom from. A few years ago I got into skinhead punk music (Oi! music by name, with the exclamation mark), and what I learned was that it carries two messages - ugly national and racial pride, and working class pride, with bands tending to divide into one or the other. Which tells me that adolescent boys get into this subculture because they need encouragement and support in world full of humiliations due to their family's class condition and low income. In cultures where working class pride used to be fostered by the organised labour movement and socialist politics giving a place of high honour and political responsibility to the working class, now almost no-one tells that to working class kids, except the skinheads. The discrimination begins at school and with how better-off people look at them in the street and avoid talking to them or acknowledging them as they pass, and everything in popular culture venerates the middle class and wealthy as more cultured, more intelligent, more attractive and so on. Only the skinheads are telling young working class boys that they have power, and they do matter, and are worth something, and not in spite of their class background, but because of it. So there is reason for anger among poor people, because they are victims of injustice, structurally and personally, with the ultimate violence which is routinely ignored being the infliction of poverty in the first place.

I don't think Chris is as myopic as the other guy. Granted he is going along with the video game canard ect. But he also hit on something the other guy breezed by to make the case for religion. Saying religion is the panacea is ridiculous really considering the murder, rape, exploitation, violence ect. Ask Gladwell and humanity is far better off than in the time of the good old days. It's a human condition that seems to be reduced by whatever relative prosperity humans create for themselves. That is purpose, voice and a desire to overcome adversity which is work. I think Chris was coming back around to this throughout the conversation.
