Goof alert! The third name in the list of editors of the Long Form volume is Sekhar Mukherjee , not Sekhar Kumar! I corrected myself during recording but still ended up using the wrong ‘take’ somehow! That’s what you get for editing late at night...My apologies.
@DiptarupGhoshDastidar4 жыл бұрын
Ahh its great to see the Longform Anthology here!! I am very closely related with and follow the works of all the editors (although I am not personally acquainted with Shekhar Mukherjee). Excellent artists all of them! No words for Junji Ito! _/\_ There were so many things I wanted to write almost at the end of each of your videos so far, but I refrained lest I end up spamming! Ha ha! And I'm sure you've talked about those plenty in a lot of the other comments too!

Have you read Raymond Briggs' Ethel and Ernest? That's where I first read (and loved) him and background reading suggested that most of his other work was for children. I seem to have made the same mistake in think of these other works as I earlier have with James Kochalka. Will have to get my hands on Gentleman Jim and When the Wind Blows ASAP then.
@ftloc5 жыл бұрын
Arunava Banerjee Ethel and Ernest is a lovely work! I read it from a library many years ago, and my memory jogged by these videos, I ordered a used copy a few weeks ago. It should be here soon! Actually I think I will also seek out Briggs’ Snowman and other kids’ work now that Thriftbooks has made most of them available secondhand!

I am jealous of your beautiful hardcover ditions of USAGI YOJIMBO! I try to buy the Carl Barks Duck hardcover in the slipcase editions myself. It's not a big price difference here in Canada, but it is kind of harder to follow the series that way. I think I saw one volume featured in two different slipcases with a different second volume in each...
@ftloc5 жыл бұрын
Rangersly Yes! Basically you need to avoid the Christmas or other ‘celebratory’ slipcases and only get the ones that put them together chronologically, the ones with the circular images. Not all of them come to India, unfortunately, and the ones that do are exorbitantly priced for some reason, probably import duties on list price with 0 discount. I’m glad I was able to get all the Peanuts hardcover volumes in slipcases, but that’s not going to happen for Barks 😔

Great stuff as usual. That Long Form volume caught my eye. I've always been interested in checking out the Indian indie comics scene but never knew where to start so I might have to pick it up.

That kabuki volume I have as well, but it was skewed when they formatted it to Library Edition, which actually ruins the readability for the story. A perfect circle is important to the theme and iconography of the story, so destroying the circle is just destroying the story. So I have the original hardcover of Circle of Blood and the Library Edition. That said, I recommend collecting all the rest of the Library Editions of Kabuki because there is no skew issues and they are fantastic printings.
@ftloc4 жыл бұрын
Yes that's exactly what's been recommended by others as well, and I also hear there are omnibuses that correct that circle problem in the first LE. I hope to be able to find the other LEs soon, but chances are slim, I fear! 😔

Looks like I'd have an awful lot to catch up to if I really decided to delve into this kind of work on a concerted level. What are some of your preferred/favorite/most highly-regarded (etc) non-comic/non-comic-related readings? What else is an influence on your thinking, your philosophies and so on in the literary or visual art realms that are separate from your interests in the graphics/comics media?
@ftloc3 жыл бұрын
Oh that's a powerfully loaded question - I've addressed bits of it in some of my Q&A videos, but I love prose fiction (although I don't read much of it these days) , particularly the works of Nabokov, Dostoevsky, Coetzee, Toni Morrison, a couple of Salman Rushdie books, Garcia Marquez, Kurt Vonnegut, but also classic favourites like Jane Austen...actually I guess I select favourite books/stories more than favourite authors at most times and find gems in many bibliographies. I also love movies, where my favourites would include Dr Strangelove, Blade Runner, In the Mood for Love, Fantastic Mr Fox, Taste of Cherry, Tampopo, All The President's Men... You know what? This is too difficult 😝
@RSEFX3 жыл бұрын
@@ftloc Yes, I guess that was kind of an insanely big question to ask. But I do very much appreciate some insight into what you find of interest, reading-wise, outside of the graphic-novels/comics realm. Your wide range of interests and suggestions in the latter has opened up a major realm of creativity for me to explore, at least to the extent possible. After a long long career in film in which I had so little time for anything but work and more or less scientific/technical matters, I am now having some welcome time for exploring these other realms on a wider basis. Thank you for this!.

Welcome to the channel, and thanks so much for the kind words! In some ways, *all* our videos are about the best comics ever (or at least our favourites/ greatest loves) because it would certainly be a lifelong effort to highlight them all. Still, we have made a handful of Top 10s as you may have seen, and plan on keeping on making such lists by genre or some other parameter, so hopefully that will work for you too. Quite simply, the "greatest 'graphic novels' " is way way too wide for me without making it into more manageable categories first! 😀

I have these Donald and Unce Scroodge stories by Carl Barks and Don Rossa in Greek, in a comic series that was being published here but seeing your video I suddently want to get them in their original language (I'm sure there would be a lot of jokes lost in translation). How does the volume counting go? They start from the Don Rossa ones and continue counting with the Carl Barks? I got confused!
@ftloc4 жыл бұрын
Although the Rosa stories came a couple of decades after the Barks stories, Barks wrote for many more years so his volumes are still being published (two a year from Fantagraphics) wheras the Rosa volumes are all done. So you can pick up all ten Rosa volumes in chronological order. There are many Barks books out already and five or six more to go I believe!
