Our Dark Past Is YOUR Present: Berkeley Scholar Warns Black Students

On Sept. 15, 2023, the 60th anniversary of the white terrorist attack that snatched the lives of four black Birmingham, Ala., adolescent girls, I, an African diaspora scholar in the UC Berkeley's Department of African American Studies, felt compelled to put aside my remarks on VéVé Clark scholar Isabella Volz-Broughton's groundbreaking podcast on the unknown black history of People’s Park at a Black Studies Collaboratory (BSC) symposium.
Seeing frightening resonances between this horrific date and today's swift rise in white supremacist attacks, not only on black people, but also on their history and culture, I instead delivered a warning. My remarks were preceded by Ms. Volz-Broughton (4:56) and followed by assistant professor Micah Khater (5:10).

My mother was friends with them and was in class that day. She always speaks of how they survived the 60s in BOMBINGHAM. That's what the local blacks in Birmingham called it because she said they lived in a war zone that bombs were heard out in black neighborhoods when the sun went down. A man in the town I used to live in was all bit executed by the police, he was being chased, got into an accident, his wife was in three pieces head and upper torso lahing in the road, legs and hips still in the passenger seat. The man was trying to get out of the car to check on his poor wife, and the cop shot him right in the neck, he too died, but it took 2 weeks. It didnt make the news though, because he and his wife were white. Thesse things happen to white people too, but no one cares. @@crystalsthefutureempressI think you’re confusing the warning that, “if you think it’s bad now it can get much worse” with the fact that we have always had it worse in comparison to our fair-skinned counterparts. There’s no need to attack someone trying to warn you about the possible consequences of not voting. Progress has been slow and somewhat inadequate considering the overt oppression just in the 20th century. But the point of the warning is not to give up because progress isn’t fast, or sufficient enough for your liking. Because if we give up now they’ll start rolling back all the gains that took half a century to achieve. A key point in the speech we just watch mentioned his generation taking their foot off the gas and losing ground. There has never been an easier time for black Americans to use the system to make change, we just need to educate our youth in how to use the system to our advantage.

As Gen X, “the Lost Generation,” I remember having conversations about the ball being dropped with my mom who grew up middle class in LI,NY, was pro Black to the point that she was the youngest on the board for the 1st Black History class in her hs Huntington, NY! My mom had every Black weekly & mthly periodical, which my sisters & I wasn’t allowed to throw away. So honestly I grew up with a false sense of security bc I didn’t realize we were that hated until after hs when I saw a popular Jamaican actor who was in Roots say that gov’t tells immigrants not to socialize with Black Americans! This still continues Everything that’s going on today just takes me back to my memory of Black journalists, activists & officials such as Jesse Jackson, Gil Noble & Julian Bond etc… discussing the direction Blacks were being stirred in by the gov’t due to lack of local leadership & support, to continue weakening the Black power dynamics during Reagan/Bush era! By the time I got to hs, sports & arts were being stripped away across the country & Planned Parenthood (to slow down non white birth rates) & the “classroom to prison pipeline” became ominous! As students some of our conversations became more about police harassment, private prisons springing up around the country & how the police were told to get as many Blacks, especially males as possible for fingerprints along with local news stations consistently depicting Blacks as criminals while Black & Brown Americans continue to be targeted, disproportionately represented, discriminated against & disenfranchised! As of today, I can honestly say that not much has changed other than we now have our rts less rights than I was born with & that’s SHAME ON AMERICA for not dealing with its biggest threat to society!

The Movement had not reaped the positive outcomes that it should have reaped. In that speech, Dr. King referenced the campaign as one of [Coming To Get Our Check]…..Dr. King was assassinated before he could lead that campaign. BUT in his memory those members who were truly committed to Dr. King and the Movement could have led the campaign…..Gone to Washington, DC and fight for what Dr. King believed needed to be fought for! They were silent……There was no Campaign to continue the fight for what Dr. King understood was needed!

Professor Lee, you speak the complete, unvarnished truth about our country. It is a truth that many Americans (in particular, those who presently constitute the majority of the population - i.e. Caucasian Americans) are unwilling to face up to. That is, the reality of the history of the ongoing racial oppression and violence that has been played out against African Americans in the U.S. for generations. Only by facing up to this truth and actively striving together in a constructive, determined and purposeful manner "to form a More Perfect Union," can we, in our millions, save the U.S. from succumbing to GOP fascism/white supremacy on November 5th, 2024. I feel your heart Brother! I, too, was active in the 60's and early 70's. In my opinion other cultures wealthy subsidized the those who were putting themselves on the line to fight injustice. As our communities fractured during the push for integration ipoer Middle class and we'll ofcBlacks distanced themselves from the everyday struggles of the masses. Bottom line, borrowing from "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka" government jobs and jobs period help to shutter the movement. Without a source of income in America, you won't last long. My first child was born in 1975. Laid off from a decent job, I had to wash dishes to survive. No one cared that myself and others were on the front lines since high school battling injustice and force integration of our outstanding black schools. Thanks for reminding us....I'm going back to the library... 1st stop at the University of Texas Austin!!

⁠Those who were members of the Civil Rights Movement lead by Dr King dropped the ball after Dr. King was assassinated. There is evidence that the next campaign of the Movement was to go to Washington, DC and finally demand reparations…..economic foundation for Black Americans which were long overdue. In Dr. King’s last interview, he spoke of his concerns regarding the continued negative treatment and devaluing of Black Americans. The Movement had not reaped the positive outcomes that it should have reaped. Later in a video of him speaking to a group, Dr. King spoke of the next campaign for the Movement as being the Campaign regarding Black Americans finally getting the economic foundation that was long over due. In that speech, Dr. King referenced the campaign as one of [Coming To Get Our Check]…..Dr. King was assassinated before he could lead that campaign. BUT in his memory those members who were truly committed to Dr. King and the Movement could have led the campaign…..Gone to Washington, DC and fight for what Dr. King believed needed to be fought for! They were silent……There was no Campaign to continue the fight for what Dr. King understood was needed!

Yeah, things are getting pretty tough out there. The allies we rely on don't seem as committed to self-correction and self-awareness as they claim to be, which is kind of funny. It's scary to see where this country and the wider Western world are heading. Our community needs to protect ourselves, but we need to do it in a modern way, similar to how immigrants adapt when they come to this country.
