18-month-old Opal Sandy was born completely deaf due to a condition called auditory neuropathy. But after taking part in a pioneering gene therapy trial, Opal became the first person in the world to trial a groundbreaking medical treatment, which successfully resulted in her being able to hear for the first time. Opal joins us alongside her parents Jo and James, and her five-year-old sister Nora, to tell us more about this miracle marvel.

Not everyone is gonna be super happy their kid will be limited in life( Yes limited) I'm not saying they should be but a lot of people when they talk you might say I'm deaf and want to write things down they'll say nvm and walk away. Jobs will be harder. Dater harder. Having a hearing family that does learn ASL cause they see you a few times a year is gonna be a disconnect. So no. It's not as awesome as you make it to be. You wouldn't be happy for your kid never being able to talk.

“Suffering from deafness?” You could have phrased that a lot less offensively. I take it you’ve never been around deaf culture, but they’ll be the first to tell you they aren’t suffering.

My daughter has deafness / hearing impairment and we never say “she suffers from deafness “. When I was working as a therapist 30+ years ago, we usually wrote reports / research articles “this child suffers from …. disability“ . After so many years, we never use this term “suffering “ anymore!!!

Were ear cilia regenerated? Or not? I have severe tinnitus and Hyperacusis, and I am housebound due to it. Desperately need a cure.

If they could do this for their youngest daughter and it has worked , they should do it for the oldest daughter too.

There's a possibility that she may not be eligible. Sometimes gene therapy cannot be given for older children due to antibodies if its viral vector based

Everyone should be taught BSL At schools and nurseries it would bd far more inclusive for deaf people, i know the basics because my niece is deaf, so going forward i was able to communicate to some of my customers when i was at work.

Its not a miracle. A miracle would be if she started hearing all on her own. This is due to the hard work of many people.

So hold her back in life is better???? its better she learn to hear now vs " oh ytou're 18 now and never had to talk so now if you WANT to talk its never gonna sound like you've always talked" LET PEOPLE HELP THEIR KID!!! no one would delay a wheelchair or medication because " they might not like that later" Being disablitied isn't fun. No is happy their kid is born blind or born without arms because they always wanted their kid that way or see it as a great thing! Some how this is( and I get it) but hearing as a child it better vs waiting until you are far older. ) dating, friends, career, family will be hard. No one learns ASL if you see them a few times a year.

There's nothing wrong with being Deaf. It's a shame their daughter has been denied access to Deaf culture.
