Hi guys. To stop condensation take the roof liner off and insulate with marine insulation, repeat for walls. Also, please wear an airtight filter mask. Mould infections in lungs are extremely difficult to eradicate. Love your vlogs.

That’s the problem. It is not humidity but the fact that boats don’t have insulation. That causes condensation due to the dew point and mould.

People don't realize how dangerous mold can be. There are thousands of types of mold . And scientist only knows little bits about more common types. And treating mold in your lungs is a nightmare that you don't want to live through. It can also cause you to have mental health issues and hallucinations and cause you to go insane . People really need to take mold problems seriously and take proper precautions to avoid breathing it in their lungs. Bc once it is in your lungs it has the perfect environment to reproduce and grow and you can't get it back out once it's in there . Mold can be very deadly .

Yeah, this was actually kinda scary to watch. No masks, no ventilation, putting your faces into enclosed pockets after you've already been disturbing the mold inside... However long that initial cleaning took, it also sent spores all through the cabin that entire time. And accepting that what we get to see is only edited snippets of a long, laborious job, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if your lightheadedness later in the day was actually the result of breathing in much more intense concentrations of mold, possibly for hours, and had nothing to do with the ozone cleaner... It just got the blame because we all tend to ascribe consequences to the most recent thing we did. Anyway that Ozone cleaner is a stop-gap at best. Spores are going to find their way back before long, and until the conditions in those cavities are changed, they'll keep making happy homes in there... In a building/DIY context we'd use mold repelling interior paints for rooms susceptible to mold and mildew growth. I'm not sure what the options are in a marine context, but the long term solution is to make those hidden spaces a hostile environment for mold, as much as you're able.

Guys, there are mold bomb foggers that will kill the mold anywhere the air can reach....and you wouldn't have to disassemble the boat. Products have been around for a long time now. I also use a negative ion generator (Ozone machine to some) - I run it for about 2 hours each month - but the 3 P's rule alpplies - while the machine is on no plants, pets or people in the area being treated. It can harm the repsiratory system! Air out the space for about 30 minutes before re-entering it. Works like a champ. You can even use some small fans blowing into cabinet spaces to aid coverage penetration. Then I see you have a machine already lol...

From a former building inspector - Mold is mold. The color is irrelevant. The idea that black mold is worse is a media driven myth. Those who are sensitive to mold (not everybody) can be sensitive to any color. To remedy a mold problem, first remove moisture. Realize you two exhale more than a pint of moisture a day just breathing. Your dehumidifier is a great first step. Then insulate your hull so any remaining moisture does not condense there and invite more mold. Or return to the tropics never to sail in colder climates again.

Tips for the penniless: 1. Use baking soda as a paste on mold FIRST(adds oxygen kills mold) 2. Wipe/wash away with vinegar water. 3. A sep bucket with really hot water to rinse out the rag before placing the rag back in the vinegar water. ∆ | No point in clearing mold if the rag is being consistently being dunked in the "clean cleaning" solution. Mold will just spread to other areas. The cleaning water won't be clean it'll just be smearing it. Don't believe me? Take a black light to the cabinets that were just cleaned. Cleaning and permanently getting rid of mold is a specialty of mine. Cars and tents should crack a window to allow heat to escape to avoid condensation. My daughter's house went underwater with the floods in Queensland a few years back and she wound up living there for almost 2 years with mould that would not quit, while she found another house. She borrowed my IQAir HealthPro 250 and it is not a plug for their units but a plug for any good quality air purifier. It made a huge difference in making it livable and no mould reactions as it had been filtered out. I would suggest something like that while you go through the process and as for every other comment use a mask. The ozone machine yes but you need to clean the air quickly as you just stir it up all the time during this process.

Sailing Uma’s Dan & Kikka gave you good advice, ventilation and the use of a whole house dehumidifier running 24/7 draining someplace that will not fill up. This will prevent condensation forming from the moisture that is in the air from your breathing, bathing, cooking, and of course from the humidity in the air. Definitely wear masks whilst cleaning! Cover everything with plastic before cleaning. Use 10:1 water to bleach or vinegar in a sprayer to clean with. Let it soak in for 5-minutes before wiping up with microfiber wipes. If you are planning on going up into higher latitudes, you should insulate the hull and the overhead. Dan & Kikka glued foam tiles onto the hull. Also, run a whole house HEPA with UV to filter the air. Thanks for the Ozone Generator tip! Good luck with the rest of the boat.

You need to insulate your boat with armaflex so you don't get condensation when you heat up your boat during winter and cold before next time you come to cold places, I have a big sailboat that is insulated with armaflex now! Before i insulate i have same problem, now is notning dehumidifies for half an hour a day and it is completely dry! insulation makes my little Dieselheater 5kw my boat 25 degrees even if it is minus 10 outside and is only running 50%, is 100L diesel/month.. Armaflex is expensive, sailboat likes yours it would probably cost about 3000 dollars, but you can use EVA foam, is maybe 500 dollers and 200 dollers for glued! but it has to be glued on, it's quite a lot of work because all surfaces have to be glued 100%, otherwise condensation can form between the layers of insulation! And you need some window covering for all windows that are on the deck, or you can replace the glass with thicker double-glazed windows but agian is cost a lot so a cheap window covering is fine (: Thanks for good video and Fair Winds and Following Seas, maybe we'll see each other out in the big world, I'll be sailing around the world in a few years. What I would suggest is ventilating under the mattress by putting a slat system laid on the boards or using the Froli system. Some people use a mesh fabric designed to allow ventilation but these are a bit limited. We used a slat system sold for this purpose that cam with its own mounts so it just fitted on the boards with the mattress on the slats. Worked really well and stopped moisture under the mattress!

Suggestion: As I watched your video I noticed that there is a small air gap between the fiberglass and the backside of the cabinets that extends from the bow to the stern of the boat. Mold territory. I would get the smallest (power wise) "Dehumidifier" like the one you have and do some creative installing. Mount the dehumidifier at one end of the boat and make a duct (hose) that connects directly to the dehumidifier and forces the "dehumidified" air from the unit into the cavity between the wall and fiberglass. At the other end of the boat drill a 3" hole and insert a grill to let the dry air exhaust from behind the cabinets. It does not have to be a lot of CFM to circulate the dry air through the small passage way. I would install small fan (5 VDC computer fan) at far end of the boat to exhaust the dry air from behind the cabinets. Adding the 2nd fan would insure that the air was sucked all the way through the small opening. Wire the system so it only works while the Solar panels are generating electricity, or your generator is running or on shore power. Just a thought. To test just put a hygrometer by the exhaust fan to see how much moisture is being removed. Should make you feel better and a lot less work in the future.

Caution using a Ozone (O3) generator on a boat. In my generation the smell of your sheets hanging on the clothesline is the O3 that is trapped in the cloth while the sheets are exposed during drying on the clothesline. High concentration of Ozone has a high propensity to break down glue, adhesives, epoxy etc. Doesn't work out well on a boat long term. Keep in mind that OGs are often used to strip off wallpaper and other simular coatings and adhesives. Also, consider OGs are used to kill bed bugs in hotels in heavy concentration and should be used as a last resort. O3 in moderation is ok to breath, as it exists in our atmosphere. However, high concentrations of O3 can damage the lining of the lungs simular to high concentrations of ammonia. You guys are on the right track, manage the moisture with a dehumidifier, and you can use an anti-fungal coating in prone areas to deter mold, as well as promote airflow. Constant airflow (circulation) will deter mold development, as mold prefers trapped areas of moisture. Lastly, check under your mattress. That is also a well-known area because there is nowhere for the trapped moisture to escape. ❤

11:46 too bad you didn’t notice there was a 3/8 adapter for the drill to use with the sockets in that big kit you had live and learn we’ve all been there. I just love that you guys are tackling this.

you will need to insulate the deckhead and the hull to prevent a repeat of this problem. Good Luck with a solution, it will make a huge difference to your personal health.

The ventilation in these boats is so bad. You can add ventilation, and it will help. Dehumidifier is also a great addition, it really helps. Meaco is a good brand for dehumidifier. Mine takes like over a liter of water from the air in 24h when it is cold out.

What a difference you two are accomplishing, congrates to you both. Everyone who owns a boat,rv, are growing mold. Even if you don't use them. Condensation is in the air everywhere. Some places are worse than others. Circulation is a must.

"Home Zone". Too good to be true. We learned about this in the Exumas from friends. I forget the exact spelling, but it works. Kills all bugs, mold, nasties... you put some crystals in a dish in every room when you leave the boat (unfortunately, you have to leave the boat for a while). When you come back, most of the dishes are empty and there is nothing living on your boat. Nothing. We had crazy ants from a yard in Florida and it killed them all dead. It is a wonder.

I had mold in my boat, and after I cleaned it, I sprayed it down with an anti mild product ( can’t remember the brand now) but the mold never came back. It was so worth it
