@@elisabethcamariajacobs8587 You hit the nail on the head. These are highly intelligent working dogs and need animal companions to release energy if homebound. We brought in a large dog so that they could romp safely and they both ended up being great companions and very alert to their environment,

I thought most owners these days used harnesses for better control and comfort for the animal. It seems archaic to have a loop around a dogs neck which can cause damage to their wind pipe when pulled upon.
@mumblesbadly7708
@mumblesbadly7708 4 ай бұрын
@@Skaterbun “Seems” is the operative word. But then again, most dog owners have no clue how to train their dogs, or communicate with them using a lead and a training collar. So they get fooled into thinking a harness gives them more humane control over their dog. P.S. Watch some of the Dog Daddy’s videos on how he trains some of the most unruly dogs, as well as how well trained his own dogs are, and you will see that a collar around the neck is not “archaic”.
@Skaterbun
@Skaterbun 4 ай бұрын
@@mumblesbadly7708 yeah so if an owner has no idea how to train a dog using the collar and lead method the dog will suffer more badly as a result. I always see badly trained dogs pulling the owners forwards and bouncing around when they see another dog, even to the extent where they look like they are choking themselves, coughing and slobbering to get to their goal, in their heads it doesn’t even compute.

I don't know if that'd work with fabulous diva queens like Tilly. She's more focused on getting attention than even getting treats! So, hand feeding her might just prime her to be permanently hand fed (no bowl, no floor even) from here on out. Otherwise, it's a good idea for most food-centric dogs. I just know our little rescue Shih Tzu got cancer (we thought she was going to die in weeks, she lived for more than a year), so as soon as we left the vet we were hand feeding her, I gave her half of my tuna sushi cause she was sad and dopey from the anesthetic, so she learnt "Ah, ha! I just have to wait and these people will give me whatever I want". She was right! We literally had a buffet for her, set out with 2-3 of her favorite meals (tinned tuna, wet food, various baby foods - she had to eat soft stuff as the tumor was in her upper stomach/throat). And then when she wouldn't eat, I'd bring it to her in bed! Anyways, she was a sassy queen and I didn't mind doting on her.

I'm not a master dog trainer, but I will guarantee you 100% she will eat when she's hungry. For a dog that won't eat do the following: put bowl with food down. Give the dog 15-20 mins. Then lift the bowl up. Try again 12 hrs later. Same routine. If the dog is healthy (not sick) they WILL eat eventually. 24 or even 48 hrs is fine....dog actually do NOT need to eat every day. We deduced that someone who loved her and spoiled her died & the family couldn't be bothered with her. They got her groomed and cruelly turned her loose! We discovered that she was happily accustomed to heavy machinery, so we figured the owner of a construction company would take his little blind sweetie to work~ and she was so cute that the guys would share their lunches with her! No dog food for Her, No Sir!! We had her for 6-1/2 more years, and were the Biggest Goops over that cute, plucky little diva!!! ❤❤❤

I love this dog, she is a St. Bernhard, too big and too clever for this family. 1. There should be a food bowl and a separate water bowl. 2. Water bowl should be there always and always full with fresh water and 5 sizes bigger than this one. 3. Food bowl should be bigger and higher up, so that she doesn't have to bend down all the way to the floor. See where she originally comes from. Her brain needs to be stimulated. Drive away with the car slowly and let her run after you for a while. She is very clever. She eats pellets from the floor, but decent proper food from the bowl. Like we don't eats sweets from a plate. We eat proper food from a plate.

Big dogs age faster than small dogs so take that into consideration as well. Her joints are no longer able to support her well maybe because arthritis is setting in as she ages. And the feeding bowl for food is too small for a dog with that size. Our chihuahuas use that size as feeding bowls so their heads have ample space to move as they eat their food. Same with their water bowls--as big as the ones for this St. Bernard.

I have recently taken in a 7yo dog that has always refused to drink indoors, until last years very hot summer & I refused to keep getting up at night to let him out, I took him to the water bowl and just kept putting drops of water on his nose. It only took 2/3 nights for him to cave, he now drinks from the water bowl indoors & out doors. I took the Sam’s approach as this gentleman when teaching him to eat. After a year of patience, I now have a happy healthy dog who understands he’s a dog, not a prima Donna .. he’s also 3 kg lighter.

Every single saint Bernard I've ever known has been like this. An absolute nightmare and overly spoiled. My any had one that refused to eat his food unless it had scrambled eggs in it. Its always 1,000% caused by the owners. Don't spoil your pets or they begin to act like complete aholes. They're animals they'll always push things as far as they can

First time seeing this "trainer" please tell me this is some kind of satire? This so called "Diva" was just scared of the bowls for some reason, (sound, maybe something happened once when she was eating from them etc) that was pretty obvious (even though, I agree that the owners didn't go about it well either, trying to get your dog to eat that way will have the opposite effect for sure). As for jumping into the car, This dogbreed is so heavy, she shouldn't be jumping up and down that high anyway, if you don't want her in pain at a later age. The whole kibble trick was bs, just the step/ramp would have solved her issue. The dog was very willing to work with the people, and only refused when she couldn't perform what was asked of her. When the dog doesn't listen.... ask yourself, are you really listening to the dog? (It's usually very clear why, when you're willing to have a good look at yourself.)

Absolutely correct. The dog clearly wanted the food, but had a problem with the bowl. Get her a bigger bowl, and raise it off the floor. Give her a step into the car. Basic common sense, and knowledge of the breed, need to kick in here. She's a really good, clever, and sweet dog, who's trying to help her owners.

Just give her a plate instead of a bowl. Some animals do not appreciate the feeling of metal against their whiskers

And once again this shows how arogant dog some dog owners are. Not understanding their dogs needs and thinking it will just conform to your life. More money than sense clearly

funny thing is that a lot of people these days recommend scatter feeding as opposed to being in a bowl because it makes the dog eat slower and mentally stimulates them.

Maybe dogs are not so smart. If my horse doesn't want to eat from the bowl, he knocks it over. It cannot be very comfortable for such a large - headed dog to eat from such a relatively small bowl?

Is it uncomfortable eating that low for her? Raising the bowl? A wider shallower bowl? And clear as crystal why she didn’t want to get in the car. She weighs a ton and it’s a lot to get that to jump that high. I bet she did it and bumped a leg or something years earlier and it hurt her.

This dog doesnt seem like needing more food in the first place. If you have more than enough, you are picky. They should start to feed her smaller meals and on certain times. Problem solved. Food is there, you will get hungry at some point.

Tackle the food but she misses the meal after 5 minutes. She gets the next meal on schedule. Skipping one and it’s all better.

Actually, I would take the dog to a vet. Her breathing is indicating she's struggling a bit. Enlarged hearts are normal for this breed. Then I would take training the people first, to train their dog. She needs training chain collar with 6' leash. In USA we have Am. Kennel Assoc that provides lists of trainers to learn how to be the alpha. Take those classes. And the owners need to take training seriously. This is no joke. Signed a St. Bernard owner.

Why did Graeme bring the bowl back again and again? Once in a blue moon my dog doesn't want to eat. I take the bowl away almost instantly and he misses a meal. So what? Next day he will eat again. It is actually quite healthy for them to miss a meal now and then. But to be honest: if I were a dog I wouldn't eat this awful dry food either.

I've had to do this with my dog with his food, take it away but he doesn't bother so he doesn't get his food. Did I feel bad ,no but I played up to him but a dog will never go hungry or just starve themselves unless they are unwell. Getting in the car isn't a problem but I have to slow my dog down because he used to try and drag me to my car and force himself in. Patience and being consistent and he doesn't get what he wants unless he gives me the right behaviours.
