After years of planning, we have finally installed our underground rainwater harvesting system, thanks to our friends Steve and Debbie. Jonathan designed a system that would allow us to harvest rainwater to use for watering my garden as well as for emergency use.
We installed two separate tanks that would capture 95 percent of the water that would normally just have to be diverted away from our home. This rainwater catchment system will help our family be more self-reliant and have a backup supply of water for emergencies.
You can learn more about storing and filtering water for emergencies at TheProvidentPrepper.org.

Given the current global situation, I think it would be wise to install a way to divert your rainwater from those tanks. In case of some nuclear or chemical event it would be a shame if the water you collected in these tanks would become unusable because of an influx of contaminated rainwater. In addition to that you could install a first flush diverter, that diverts the start of your rainwater runoff that contains the most debris, dust, leaves that normally collect on your roof (I listened more to this video than that I watched so I did not notice it if you did install that.)

Seriously? It would be FAR easier for the powers that be to "contaminate/poison" our municipal water supplies than to concoct some sort of acid rain to universally contaminate rainwater everywhere...and "get" the relatively few who are harvesting rain water.
@JonathanBJones
@JonathanBJones 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jelle...yes, since I have the Fernco couplers on each downspout, I can quickly pull that apart and cap the pipe to the tank and drain the water from the downspouts out into the yard. As for the first flush, I gave this a lot of thought and decided not to do a first flush diverter. At first I had a more complicated system with more plumbing and the first flush, but then decided to keep the system as simple as possible. Water runs in by gravity. When the tank is full, the water runs by gravity into Kylene's permaculture swale. When I need the water, I can siphon to many spots, and have a pump that is powered by a solar power station to get it everywhere else. Part of the rationale is that the first flush is not going to get rid of all the contaminants anyway. We have a metal roof and gutter screens so we shouldn't get any leaves or other large stuff. If leaves do get in by some chance, they will float to the top and run out the drain. I will check the screens on the drains once a year, but probably won't find much. I plan to pop open the tank about every 5 years just to check things. I will be surprised if I find even a quarter inch of sediment on the bottom, and the first flush will have missed most of that anyway. Most of the water will be used to irrigation. If we do end up needing to drink some of it, we have the tools and experience to disinfect and filter it. I don't think much will grow in there, but I may lightly dose it with some calcium hypochlorite once in a while. If there is anything there, it will kill it, then the chlorine will dissipate. Bottom line for me was that anything other than the simplest system is just stuff that will end up failing and causing problems. I guess time will tell me if I should have installed one, but for now, I am confident that I made the right call. Thanks for being part of the solution!!

@@JonathanBJones You have to decide on the bases of circumstances and intended usecase what works best for You. You do have the advantage of having 2 tanks. You can always pump water from on tank to the other and then clean the empty tank. I can't remember, but have you thought about installing an old-fashioned simple pump to access the water in case electronics don't work, like after an EMP?

Last year we hooked up one rain barrel to our downspout. This year we added two more barrels to that first one connecting them with pvc pipe. In addition, we added another rain barrel to a second downspout. We now have the ability to gather 220 gallons of rain water, not as big a deal as your cool system, but it helps in our little corner of the world.

Fantastic! Harvesting rainwater is crucial. However. I think you missed something very important. I didn’t see first flush diverters on the downpipes. They divert the first bit of rainwater that picks up dirt and dust and debris that’s on the roof away from the tanks so what you end up storing is good, clean water from a freshly washed roof. I would think right now when the potential for a certain kind of fallout is higher than usual a first flush diverter would be absolutely critical. They’re not expensive and won’t mess with the trenching so will be easy to add. If you do add them, please do a follow up video showing people how to do it, and also mention that they can put in a diverter and then collect the water in ibc totes or barrels etc so that everyone can see that they can harvest some rainwater even if they can’t afford to have massive tanks underground.

Great system. I collect water in the 275 gallon totes. I also installed a "first flush" system. It is only about 5 feet of 4 inch PVC pipe that, when full of water, over flows into a 1 1/2 inch pipe to the holding tank. I put a "threaded cap" on the end so that it can be removed between rains to flush leaves out of the pipe.

Congratulations on this dream! I haven't seen this problem discussed on any of your other videos. I hope you can answer my question. You have multiple buckets filled with food. Regardless whether it's flour, wheat berries or sugar, my question is the same. You have a gamma seal on the buckets which are currently in use and the regular storage lids on the stored buckets with back up supplies. When you finish the food in the current use bucket do you: 1) transfer the gamma seal lid to the next bucket in rotation or 2) pour the next bucket in rotation into the now empty bucket with the gamma seal? If you choose #1, how do you avoid damaging the ring when removing it? If you choose #2, how do you pour flour or sugar without making a mess since there aren't funnels for buckets? There's no way I want to spill food near my food storage and draw "things" to it.

Question (not related): Will storing sugar in soda bottles without oxygen absorbers be safe if containers are protected from rodents? Do you recommend placing desiccants in with the sugar? You don't use oxygen absorbers with sugar. It will become hard as bricks.
@JonathanBJones
@JonathanBJones 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Karen...soda bottles are definitely not my favorite, but they do work well. We have not done sugar in them, but it should work well. I probably wouldn't use a desiccant here, since our climate is quite dry and the product should be very dry. But in humid climates, I would likely do that since the product has been exposed to some moisture and if you are packaging in a humid environment, you will get a minor amount of moisture in the process that could cause the sugar to clump and get hard. As for the air...these bottles are very tight, and the air infiltration rate is very slow, but there is some small amount. They are tight enough to protect against insects, and the food oxidation will be very minimal. You also have some issue with light, but if kept in a box or other dark place, that is not a problem. They are not a 30 year storage container in my opinion, but they do well, and if they are free and help get the job done, I like the outcome. Thanks for being part of the solution!

What is your plan for getting the water out of those tanks?
@JonathanBJones
@JonathanBJones 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott...to some extent we will be able to siphon water to where we need it. For the other places I will be using 12 volt pumps run with a solar power station. Great question! Keep making progress!

How can this be drinking water? The roof would give you dirty water. Also how do you get it out of the tank?
@JonathanBJones
@JonathanBJones 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Kathryn...for the most part, this will be irrigation water. If we do need to drink it, we have the supplies and experience to disinfect and filter it. As for getting it out, we will be able to siphon the water to many places, and we will use 12 volt pumps powered by a solar power station for any other areas we need to get it to. Great questions...thanks for being part of the solution!

First flush diverters?
@JonathanBJones
@JonathanBJones 2 жыл бұрын
Hey friend...I gave this a lot of thought and decided not to do a first flush diverter. At first I had a more complicated system with more plumbing and the first flush, but then decided to keep the system as simple as possible. Water runs in by gravity. When the tank is full, the water runs by gravity into Kylene's permaculture swail. If there is anything there it will kill it, then the chlorine will dissipate. Bottom line for me was that anything other than the simplest system is just stuff that will end up failing and causing problems. Thanks for being part of the solution!!

Yeah...some states completely ban rainwater harvesting...others, mostly eastern states encourage it. We have the ability to harvest rain with strict limitations, which I pushed all the way to the max. Thanks for your comments!

Thanks but sadly in Northern Nevada it's Illegal to save or store rain water! It's insane up here! Check the laws in your state...And consider moving if your natural human rights are questioned! No joke I am leaving in 2 years 👍😎!!

I have been seeing those posts about illegal to save water so I have looked it up. I am surprised how many states have restrictions. There is a website the breaks down each state. Lucky my state it is legal and encouraged to harvest water. We get a lot of rain but in the summer when it get drier I use the rain barrels to water the garden. Al Cook if I was you, I would move. Stay safe.

110 gallon limit...in COLO...
@JonathanBJones
@JonathanBJones 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Al...yes, western states water law is generally prior appropriation doctrine, which means even if water falls on your property, it is not yours without a permit, and in most areas in our state, water is "fully appropriated", which means you can no longer get a permit...you can buy one from someone else, but otherwise you have no option. Fortunately, our legislature created an exception such that we can have either 2 above ground container totaling not more than 200 gallons, or underground storage totaling not more than 2500 gallons. I opted to maximize our underground storage. Every state is different...some completely disallow (apparently like Nevada and I think Arizona), others especially in the east encourage it to minimize the runoff from individual properties. Thanks for being part of the solution!

I’d love to harvest rainwater but unfortunately we have an asphalt shingle roof 😐
@sandraintexas6959
@sandraintexas6959 2 жыл бұрын
You should look into this further. I know that asphalt roofing material made after the year 2000 don't have the toxic materials that older roofs have. For an asphalt roof, you definitely need a first flush system, meaning that the initial water and gunk on the roof get flushed out and away from your storage tank.

Hey Carrie...I have shared your concern, but I agree with Sandra in Texas. I think it is still viable, especially for irrigation purposes. Last information that I read indicated that it is safe to harvest off almost any roof. Metal is definitely better, but check out the possibilities and decide your comfort level. Keep doing great things!

Now Barbara...You're okay...with all the good you do, this minor indiscretion will be overlooked. And yes, the sand is used on the base to easily level the tanks, then used on all sides to prevent sharp rocks from being close enough to the tank to potentially puncture it, although these tanks are robust enough it is not a huge concern, especially since these areas will only have light foot traffic. Thanks for your friendship and for being part of the solution!
