Don’t just vote. Talk and persuade within your people who don’t align with u 100% , educate and explain. Learn why they think the way they do so u can know how to tackle it. Volunteering in campaigns is a good start to gain & continue the skills that help u in these difficult conversations. Start in local elections, congressional and state seats. I’m not telling y’all it works all time 100%, but it start having an impact on people and gets the gears going. I definitely I’m still trying because theres other elections but I’m definitely not wasting time with ppl who are not open to have these conversations and don’t have the flexibility to question their beliefs.

being a young black woman, one who attends howard university (kamala’s alma mater), myself and my peers were so disheartened with the election results, but not surprised. there’s a saying that black people (especially women) have to work twice as hard to be seen as half as good, and that statement is a testament to this very situation. there is so much more work this country needs to do, but hopefully overtime it will be better. there is so much i can say regarding this, but all i can say is i am so proud of my alumna. in 107 days, she instilled hope to millions of people, united communities. she gave little girls of colors hope that there are no limits to what they can do. so thank you madam vp from a black girl from cali. to those hurt, devastated, feeling all negative emotions about this, I leave behind kamala’s power words from her concession speech: “only when it is dark enough can you see the stars”

Becky, that was Missouri (my home state) that passed abortion/minimum wage/sick leave! So many people here are Republicans in name only and if you actually talk to them, all they actually want is support for the working class. It's hard to grapple with.
@tdc51781Ай бұрын
I’m Missouri adjacent - I live in the STL DMZ. The thing is Missouri has shown voters that their elected officials will consistently ignore them. So yeah, they passed abortion and minimum wage - but you can’t be serious about that and your ticket still elects Hawley, Parsons, Schmitt, Wagner, ect. and be serious about enshrining those rights. Ultimately those voters made the decision that they put whatever it is that made them vote for those candidates above any of the people those amendments would have helped.

@ I’ve lived on the Missouri side of St. Louis almost my entire life, and the only other place I’ve lived is Springfield so you’re not telling me anything I don’t already know. Religion is a major factor in why they vote Republican, as well as it being what is familiar and comfortable. But shifting mindset is easier than shifting values and Missourians have proven that their values are more progressive than they get credit for. That’s why I still have a sliver of hope for my state.

I left the US about 15 years ago for Europe. I'm type 1 diabetic and insulin was simply too expensive to be affordable, and I was going to die going to the hospital so much and having ambulances called when I'd have seizures in public. And no, the Walmart insulin didn't work for me. So I've never known a United States that was livable Lost my left eye at 23 to diabetic retinopathy because I didn't have vision insurance and couldn't pay $30k out of pocket for the surgery to save it. So yeah, I definitely feel for the people that will be affected by health policies being messed with by Trump, but it's never exactly been good in the States. Everyone in Europe thinks our lack of universal healthcare is insane, and they're correct. But yeah, on election night results started coming in at midnight Copenhagen time, and I stayed up until about 3. Went to sleep very scared. People had been telling me not to worry about it for months, but seeing the way people were so lukewarm about Harris had me worried. I tried so hard to hold onto hope but I definitely wasn't surprised when I woke up and Harris conceded. I spent a couple days just sad. Couldn't get out of bed. Yeah, I don't live there anymore but a lot of people I love do. I don't want anyone to suffer, and Trump is going to affect the entire world in a bad way. But the first thing they try to kill is hope. They want us too sad to fight back, just like Becky pointed out. They also want to kill community - the rise in racism, misogyny, xenophobia etc. is evidence of that. They want us at each other's throats because if we're hating immigrants for eating pretend pets then we're not focusing on Trump being a felon, apparently? Still not sure how a guy in debt up to his eyeballs and with every business he's tried failing miserably is seen as better for the economy but I guess him telling people nice things is better than Harris' new homebuyer tactic. I really don't know. I'm still upset but I have a big Ukrainian friend group and even if things look bleak I'm still going to be there for them, and for everyone who needs it. I'm going to love harder and do more in defiance of their side's extreme contempt for the most basic tenets of humanity. Sorry for rambling but yeah. Thanks for this. You're all wonderful and everyone in the US, we'll get through this. We don't have any other choice but to make it as good as we can. Show them we're better just by being decent.

in re: states that voted red but simultaneously voted for liberal policies-i think it just came down to the fact that, like matt mentioned briefly at the start, the dem campaign was very poorly run. it not only ostracized pro-palestine voters, but it later pivoted to appeal to lite republicans, and was (and has always been) overly reliant on being “the lesser evil.” it’s clear people Want liberal policies and rights, but can’t trust a candidate who won’t listen to those who are actually marginalized (i’ll personally never forget the “i’m speaking” comment). this is most apparent in michigan, a pivotal swing state where harris lost, but rep. rashida tlaib-who has been a vocal critic of both the trump and biden admins and is the only palestinian member of congress-won her district by nearly 70%. also, not to be more of a debbie downer, but most (if not all) of the new ~diverse~ people elected to congress that becky mentioned are funded by aipac 🙃🙃🙃

I know one day we will see a female president of the United States. Tim Walz gave me so much hope too, that maybe more conversations would be had regarding neurodivergent protection laws. But I am sad and angry for this country. There's a lot I want to say but I want to thank you all for talking about the election. It made me feel less alone.

There wasn’t much talk about young men and specially young colored men who mostly voted for trump. I don’t think the question is why did they vote for trump but more so why they didn’t vote for Kamala. Being a middle aged man of color, I felt like the Democratic Party alienated this age/demographic group. We have made strides for women’s rights, trans rights and (most) people of color and I’m on board and support all of these things but like Matt said, people are struggling economically and they don’t have the capacity to focus on other people’s problems. Young colored men (blacks and Latinos) are struggling mentally, economically and that wasn’t spoken about much from the Democratic Party and that’s why I think one of the reasons why trump won

I am deeply saddened and worried for our future based on the outcome of this election. And I wanted to share that the reason Supreme Court justices don’t have term limits is to hopefully make it so those justices don’t have to worry about losing their job and therefore having to appeal to whoever is in political power and therefore will be more objective in their decision making. This has historically been practiced by both the politicians in power and the justices appointed but in modern politics, justices have been chosen more along party lines than their ability to remain objective and unbiased across their career.

I am now convinced that morality is but a social construct. In my country, we hired the son of an ousted dictator, with recorded involvement in those atrocities. Over a perfectly capable candidate. Not just the better candidate, but universally the best choice. My hope was shattered. I cried while driving for days. Why would i fight for the right of a country that doesnt want it?? Yep. Im a totally different person from before this.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and talking everything through with friends definitely helps us work through issues that can be hard to deal with. I just encourage anyone that feels the same way you all do to try to find someone that doesn't think like you too hear them out. Trump won the popular vote so I hope we can agree that not all 76 million people that voted for him are the enemy and bringing in the next holocaust like was alluded to in the beginning. There are a lot of people that felt marginalized, like their lives were being negatively impacted progressive thought, rising prices on everything from groceries to homes and wanted to do something about it.

I don’t know how bad these next 4 years are going to get, but we should all remember this: No matter how hard and hopeless it gets, do not lose hope in yourself and what you believe in. Do not let the hate, pain, suffering, and darkness in this world numb your heart. Remember that surviving/living in a world and society that does not value your true self and disrespects your very existence is one of the biggest forms of resistance in itself. If we fall, we will get back up no matter how long it takes and keep fighting so that EVERYBODY can be free to have a better future for themselves and for the future generations. In the meantime, take time to reflect, grieve, heal, love, educate and please don’t lose your faith in fighting for a better future for everyone. Remember that in the darkest and loneliest of times, we must muster up the confidence, courage and strength in ourselves and others to be the light.🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵

I remember going into work in 2016, right after he was first elected. I worked at Kmart and I walked in and we had our morning meeting and we were all crying. My boss told us that it would be alright, it was only four years. Only four years and we would get another shot.

Since I rambled too much in my other comment and didn't say it - this disabled person who managed to escape thanks you. I feel seen. It feels like most people have forgotten his outright mockery of a disabled journalist and all the other horrible things he's done. Sending so much love to everyone from Denmark, we'll get through this even if it's by the skin of our teeth.

5:10 in Arizona we passed Prop 139 which added abortion access protection in our state constitution. We also defeated a prop that would have lowered the minimum wage for tipped workers. This prop was actually put on the ballot by our Republican legislature in an effort to bypass our Democratic Governor who has vetoed more bills in her first 2 years than any other in our States history.

I live in a blue city in a red state and it has been tough ever since. I have never felt the way that I did when I woke up the day after. I have lost my filter as well as my “i’m uncomfortable let’s just get this conversation over with smile” for ignorant people and it is kind of refreshing. I have never been more upset with people. I have been focusing on silver linings.

26:25 I think the design of public bathrooms/shower rooms in mind is also important for this discussion. What Becky and Matt were talking about here seems to be public bathrooms/shower rooms where you have a single toilet/shower in the whole room and is clearly intended for a single occupant at a time. In which case, assigning it as a non-gendered bathroom would be feasible. However, there are also public bathroom / shower room designs where in 1 room, you have several stalls and is meant for more than 1 person at a time to be in the same room. In this case, I can see where the safety concerns of people are coming from and it doesn't seem to be as easy as just make everything non-gendered. Also, in general, home bathrooms are shared with people we know / are familiar with. A lot of people probably won't be comfortable with a ramdom stranger going up to their homes to use the bathroom in their house. Whereas, in public restrooms, we regularly share it with people we haven't met before and will probably never meet again.

While disappointed, I wasn't utterly devastated. I had hopes but looking over everything I already knew he'd win majority so I had been processing for a long while even before the election. I'm just taking life as it comes and that's all I can fully control. VOTE and support the ones and groups I need to get the seats to represent what I want and believe.

Thank you guys for talking about this. People around me are not as emotional and it helps to know I'm not the only one who feels so scared and disgusted. I'm a med student in my gynecology rotation now and when we were doing sonographies of female babies.... I couldn't help but think "wow 72 million voted to take away your fundamental rights." I cried about it that night. It's just so incredibly disheartening

Just to let y'all know same-sex marriage IS constitutionally protected in Vegas (Nevada as a whole) question 2 was on our ballot to remove the ban for same-sex marriage from the constitution and it passed in 2020. I was and still am proud of being able to vote for that before moving out of state in 2021.

5:49 I can imagine what happened here, without knowing how many voted for Trump this time vs last time, is that people aligned with more progressive policies voted *for* those policies but not for Kamala. As much as I hate Trump and everything he represents, I understand people's frustration and mistrust for Kamala and the democratic party in general. Not only are they proudly founding a genocide, they're also pandering more to "moderate conservatives" instead of really pushing for meaningful change.

@1HannahsАй бұрын
I'm white, the majority of my family is. What I don't understand, is they seem to actually value their whiteness. Wtf?! I remind them all the time that humans are all the same and they could have been born exactly like the people they judge. I just don't understand how people can vote for their benefits when it comes at the cost of others. All this to say, despite being white, it all comes down to empathy and compassion. Those with it can put themselves in anyone's shoes, but those without will only care about themselves. 😔 i am also queer and disabled so I have a little more insight than my family, but still. I'm tired of white people thinking they are better than others just for the luck of the draw on who they were born as. 🤨

I don't live in the US. Hearing Becky say that the US claims to have the best healthcare and the best everything is so true and I feel one of the main issues. Opening your horizons to the many countries that outperform the US consistently on all possible measurements and what laws and policies these countries have implemented throughout the years to get to these high levels of life expectancy, education, health, happiness, etc. would be a much more productive mindset than the 'US number 1 country in everything'. You don't have to be the one to figure everything out alone. Socialism doesn't have to be a bad thing. Taking care of your citizens and free healthcare makes everyone thrive, not just the rich. These things have been shown again and again in so many other countries. Anyways, I'm so sorry for you guys, whenever rights are taken away from women and minorities anywhere we all cry!
