You shared how you flip your beds for the fall and that the raised beds don't have as much life in them. A new thing I learned this year to help raised beds keep life in them is to leave the plants roots in the raised beds [will help keep the dirt in there too]. Just cut the plant at the base and let all the life eat and decompose the roots for you. Hope this helps.

Autumn & winter have taken on a new gardening life for me this past year, once I discovered that I could easily grow lettuce & arugula, green onions & garlic. For this fall, I've also bought radish, carrot, bok choy & leek seeds, preparing to plant them out this weekend. I've been surprised at how much more flavor there is in the homegrown garlic, and at how the green onions (scallions) matured into small red onions when I left them in the ground!

In NC too and I’m actually so excited for fall! This summer was sooo brutal in the garden, I wasn’t very successful with a lot of my edible plants, so many got overrun with pests like hornworms and squash vine borers 🤬but I love leafy greens, so I am definitely excited to try to get my kales, Swiss chards, lettuces, radishes, bunching onions, and some perennial flowers I’m hoping to get established for next spring. I love a fresh kale Caesar salad, especially with a variety of types, different textures. Going to do my best to protect the greens this time with all the insect netting and companion planting herbs like thyme to keep the naughty bugs away!

The best way to debug Broccoli is put your Broccoli in cold salt water. First get the salt to dissolve into a tiny bit of hot water and then add ice or cold water and all the bugs will detach to float to the top. Also rehydrates the Broccoli and makes it nice and crisp ;)

Just got into cover crops trying to establish new areas. Realized you can just buy beans and spice seeds at the grocery store and deer food plot seeds at the farm and feed store if you can’t easily find bulk seeds locally. You just need to make sure of planting times. About kale, I’ve heard that less insects like red cabbage, so I’m wondering if it could be something to do with the anthocyanins in your red Russian kale. Love that variety too.
