Hi Heba, The spicy shrimp sounds wonderful. I've never seen a born on the island seafood platter like this before..Wow Maceo spice shop food looks so yum. Nothing like spicing up a meal. 🥰 xo At Willie G's, you were eating at the birds restaurant..lol

When we saw that platter we had to get it and been getting ever since lol. Love to eat seafood like that. And Maceo was a hidden gem. So glad we decided to try it. And now Mr Maceo has us for life now. He really is a genuine man. Those birds know where the food are lol. Thank you Robin! 🥰❤️

@@HebaS For sure, they know where the good food is and they can grab a fast bite flying by your table. lol This reminded me of the open restaurants in Hawaii. It's so strange, I've been on this Island for decades, and never bothered to eat at most of the restaurants here. For example, I want to explore Tokyo, and try ramen everyday there, but just now I've heard of this placed called Suki Poke by the sea in galveston, and they seem to serve Japanese ramen, and other Japanese foods, and now I'm thinking of not going to japan....but the food part was only 50% of the reason to go, the other 50% was to simple travel...move about in a world and culture different from what I'm used to, and see how k navigate through it. I'm too comfortable here in Galveston...in the U.S., and want a challenge if you will.

I need to try that ramen place. We just came back from Europe and it was wonderful. Travel is good for the soul. To see, smell and taste the different cultures. It really is fun and hope you can do. It’s like a whole other world out there and it’s wonderful. Thank you and have a wonderful week 🥰☺️

Heba you pass my hometown when your going to Galveston, Texas City. Well I was born in Galveston so I’m officially BOI-(born on the island)…Oh yeah we always stop at the Buckey’s in Seguin when we are heading to Texas City. I always have to pickup some Peppered Beef Jerky to ship to my grandson and a couple of BBQ sandwich’s for the road and their house fried potatoe chips, yum yum. Galveston does have some great seafood restaurants, that’s what I miss the most, the fresh seafood we could buy in Seabrook to cook at home. Didn’t know how good we had it till we moved to the Hill Country. That Cajun Greek I’ve never tried now I’ll have to go when I head that way in November, my daughter is flying in so I can take her to her Neurologist follow up appointment. What Condo would you recommend staying at? You made me crave seafood now.❤️❤️

Oh wow. A born on the island girl. I’m sure the Hill country has great food. But love Galveston. And yes you have to try Cajun Greek. And it depends on where to stay. Our condo has a minimum of 6 nights. But the Galvestonian is good. And the hotel galvez I heard is nice. And San Louis is nice too. Love going in the fall and winter. I want to go back lol

I use to eat at Star Drugstore when I worked at Levy’s. And back then when you walked through the doors it was like walking back in time. They served cokes in the funnel shaped paper cups inside a metal cup holder. Also had paper straws. The only seating was around the preparation area. When I needed sone cough drops, I had to go to the back where the pharmacists were. I asked for my cough drops, and this elderly man got up on a ladder and took them out of a drawer. The whole back wall had drawers, made of metal. The lady time I was in there, was very disappointed. Someone had it filled with junk. It was never the same. I have no idea what it looks like now. It would be interesting to see it. Don’t know if any water affected the place during Ike. Anyway, just thought I’d throw that in. It was an awesome place. Will never forget it.

"Galveston was one of the richest cities in the country"....under the Maceo family (Balinese room, Gambling, alcohol during prohibition). The Maceo family and the Fertita family are intertwined and deep rooted in the history of Galveston. I believe Ronnie Maceo told us that he is the oldest living Maceo...he's super nice and hoot to talk to! Also, you mentioned Willie Gs..have you tried Fisherman's Wharf? Sit outside there as well and you can also sit right next to the Elissa, the 1877 Tall sailing ship!
@HebaS3 жыл бұрын
Ronnie is a hoot! Been there several times after the video and we talk. Such a nice man. Very personable. But that is great history. Thanks for letting us know. The name I hear all the is Moody but not Maceo. Didn’t know they were associated with the Balinese room. What a time to live then. Yes we have been there several times to Fisherman’s Wharf and it’s good. But the last time was like 10 years ago. And it’s nice seeing the sailing ship there. Also see the big yacht that the guy who owns most of the restaurants there next to it. Lol.

Howdy Bourbon, from a 4th generation BOI (Born On the Island). When historians say Galveston was one of the richest cities in the country and the Strand was the Wall Street of the Southwest, they are talking about the days before the 1900 storm, which pre-dates the Maceo family's businesses here. Galveston was the world's larges cotton port at one time and was Texas's only major port before Houston was even a city. Galveston had, at one time, more millionaires per square mile than any other city in the country because of cotton. The HUGE "Cruise Terminal #1 is an old cotton warehouse that is about 4 city blocks long. It was but one of many. The millionaires of the day were the Moody's, the Sealy's, and the Kempner's, to name a few. Cotton, banking, shipping, and sugar came long before the Balinese, the Hollywood, or the Turf. I met Ronnie Maceo and his father back about 1976 when they had a place called the Turf, across from the Grand Opera House on Postoffice St. My boss, a steamship agent, took me thee and said I had to try a muffelata and drink a beer for lunch one day. I have been eating them ever since. Best with a Shiner Bock in my not so humble opinion. Sadly, Ronnie Maceo passed away a couple of years ago and Galveston is diminished.
@Grynslvr218 күн бұрын
@@HebaS Sadly Ronnie Maceo passed away in 2022 and with him goes a ton of Island personality. The Moody's were a banking, cotton, and shipping family in the 1800's when Galveston was the world's larges cotton port. The Maceo's came after the 1900 storm and operated several dinner clubs, and gambling establishments. The Balinese Room was still a great restaurant back in the mid 1970's when I first went there for dinner and a play. The Maceo's had also operated the Hollywood and the Turf. The new Turf was where I met Ronnie in about 1976 or so when he was notorious for having to chase the downtown bums and drunks away from the Turf's front door with a broom, to allow customers access. He was one of the people who helped revitalize downtown Galveston. BTW, the family still runs the Spice Company and I had a muffelatta from there (best with a Shiner Boch) last week. Great stuff.

Thank you for sharing your favorite places in Galveston! I am planning a return trip in early October and that is how I found your channel. :) You are both fantastic together. I enjoyed your friendly, down-to-Earth approach. I will definitely try many of your suggestions. I want to also say that I have greatly enjoyed your other travel vlogs, too. After this video I checked your channel (because I just knew I would like what you had to share). Imagine my joy and surprise that you did the Italy trip….easily one of my favorite countries to visit. It has been so many years since I have been there and watching your videos transported me back and inspired the aspiration to travel to the Amalfi coastal area (bucket list!). Pompeii has changed since I was there last. There wasn’t as many tourist barriers. And the food….*groan*….there is nothing like true coastal Italian food. You both nailed it in your descriptions: fresh, al dente, etc. And the gelato…..sigh. Yes, nothing like real Italian. (I am getting carried away!) I hope to see more of your trips, even the weekend getaways are wonderful! Thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts. (Yep, Egypt is on the bucket list, too; but especially the Red Sea resorts like you shared!) Heba, thank you for sharing your story about your family and how you became a KZbinr during you Q&A. My heart goes out to you and I wish you and yours abundant blessings. Now, I really must go….I have more Heba videos to check out! :)

We agree with your picks, but you should try Mercadito Y Taqueria! The best food at this grocery store! After finding this gem, we ate there 2 times the last 3 days of our trip and every time since! Breakfast at America's Kitchen is great! Pancakes are awesome!

Thank you! We will definitely try them the next time we go. Especially for those pancakes. Thank you! Enjoy your weekend ☺️

We love Galveston! Thank you so much for sharing this video, now we have some great new places to try out. We travel in our RV so we do a lot of our own cooking but sometimes we like to eat out. This review gave us some great choices that fit our diet. Again, thank you so much for sharing!

Overall pretty solid suggestions. But to add to that, y'all have to try: - Benno's - Gypsy Joynt - Penney's - Mama Teresa's Flying Pizza _ Mr. Taco - Nollan's food truck park (I'm sure there's a couple I'm forgetting)!
@HebaS2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Actually we’ve tried Benno’s many times and it’s good but haven’t been in a while. And just tried Gypsy Joint last month when we went They moved to a new location off 61sr and had their pizza. It’s so good. And my husband had one of their burgers. Delicious too. The new place doesn’t look very Gypsy though. But haven’t tried the others you suggested. But will definitely try them when we go back in a couple of months. Thank you so much! Oh and you remember any more please let us know. Thanks! 😊

Love the video. We live in Oklahoma City but make it to Galveston several times a year. (We buy the year long parking on the sea wall- when we started doing that we decided it’s official we go too much!) You hit most of our favorite spots. Don’t understand why Gaido’s never makes these kinds of lists though. We went to Galveston 3 weeks ago just because my wife wanted to eat there.
@HebaS Жыл бұрын
Lol yea when you go that much like us that is a better deal lol. I know, Gaidos is good but not my favorite unfortunately. That’s ok. Everyone has their favorites. Last time we’ve tried is was 10 years ago and haven’t been back. But I hear ya wanting to go just to eat. We’ve done that last year. Drove one day to eat at Sunflower Cafe lol. Thank you so much! Enjoy!

We just left Galveston for a little week Vaca before all the tourists hit. I love the place but it's absolutely ridiculous at how expensive they have gotten for food. I mean I understand making money but man.....it's out of control.
@HebaS2 жыл бұрын
I can only imagine how expensive it got since last year. Every where prices has gone up. Being on the beach with drinks and snacks is good enough for me now until inflation goes down. Glad you had a good time there.

Hello love your video, hey we are heading to Galveston this summer but don’t know where to stay or what area , where do you recommend?
@HebaS Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!! We prefer the east end. And depending on price you can check out the Galvestonian. I believe there is a 2-3 night minimum. Next to that is the Palisade Palms. That has a 6 night minimum. Both at condos. And are directly on the beach. There are nice hotels like the St Luis. I heard they have a nice pool. Hotel Galvez. Hilton. Holiday Inn. And those are in the Seawall. Have to walk across the street to the beach. We are not familiar with the west end of the island but it’s far from town. I hope this helps! If you have anymore questions please don’t hesitate to ask. Have fun!!

BOI is born on the island. I remember the seaview cafe manuals marios on 61st. Hills seawall cafe. Boulevard drive in gaidos and the Golden Greek. Star cafe is still there. The strand isn’t the strand I grew up with. My grandpas business was at 1919 strand farmers Marine was next door on one side and the dry dock cafe was on the other. Best pancakes I ever had. Steves cafe across the street on the corner. Best &1.00 lunch ever. Cafeteria style servings.

Manuel’s was home of crab stuffed flounder. We delivered produce to all the restaurants in Galveston and all the grocery stores. Back before Krogers A&P and the corporate grocery chains ran the private stores out of business.
