Jesus said, “Unless you believe I AM HE, you will die in your sins” and “Before Abraham was born, I AM” and “No man comes to the Father but by Me.” Jesus was the only perfect Person who walked the earth. Had He not been fully God and fully man, He could not and would not have the power to save, nor could He have risen from the dead. “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it up in three days.” He was speaking of His body. The word Believe from greek has been translated very poorly thus many don't know the actual meaning...original greek word is pisteuo which means to trust within a personal relationship, to fully commit. This is a biblical meaning of belief..it's more than a mere belief, more than just attending church and knowing in your mind...God says, whosoever fully commits in this relationship, will have eternal life...this totally gives a new meaning to this verse..think about it, why James said, Faith without works is dead..it points back to this verse..its a relationship so, so it's gotta be worked out on both sides..Devil and his angels believe and tremble. But they rebelled and don't want to commit..if you just simply believe without committing, submitting, abiding in Christ, then there is no promise of eternal life.

One important thing about John 3:16 that the Christian world doesn’t put emphasis on is on the person WHO actually said these words(of John 3:16) and that was Christ himself telling Nicodemus how much his Father love the world( us) that He gave the World me. John 3:16, Was NOT Jesus speaking it was John himself. Jesus never referred to Himself as the only begotten Son. Jesus referred to Himself as the Son of Man. John 3:16 and after are John's words not Jesus. These are Jesus last words in John 3. John 3:13-15 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven-(the Son of Man). 14Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so (the Son of Man) must be lifted up, 15that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”

Jesus begin speaking after Nicodemus ask the question in verse 9. Also in John chapter 9 Jesus ask the blind man that was healed does he believe on the Son of God as he was speaking of someone else but revealed that he is the Son of God Notice: John 9:35-38 “Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? [36] He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? [37] And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. [38] And he said, Lord, I believe. This is not an accurate translation of John 3:16. God did not give His "only Son".....He gave His only begotten Son. God has many adopted sons according to scriptures...but only one begotten Son.

This is a great Bible verse written to believers. It is not how anyone preached the Good News to unbelievers. It is a beautiful verse that should not be preached to unbelievers. do not throw your Pearls to swine. As much as I love this verse it is irksome when taken out of context. Just a side note the Gospel of Matthew and John are addressed to believers. Luke and Mark are the best Gospels to present to unbelievers. Continue believing faithful to the end. Believe in the one time action of God's provision. God deals with his problem by providing his own solution. How to deal with his rebellious children.

The Gospel, John 3:16 is the heart and soul of Salvation, and God made it simple enough for even a child or atheist to understand and be saved. Strange how many religious preachers can’t simply believe and understand The Gospel. For (GOD) so Loved the World that HE Gave (sacrificed) His one and only SON (Jesus CHRIST), that everyone who (BELIEVES in HIM) shall not perish, but (Be Saved) and have eternal life. GOD Saves us-When we BELIEVE-HE Gave us-HIS SON Jesus-as a Sacrifice-to cover our sins....PERIOD! Imo, the church wastes time and souls by trying to help God save the lost, by adding their controlling religious words and opinions on how to be saved, which lead to confusion and division. The only Repenting needed is to Repent of our (Unbelief in the Gospel). The man on the cross only said, remember me when you get into your Kingdom, (Believing Jesus as his Savior). Then Jesus told him, “today you will be with Me in paradise.” On the cross, Jesus (fulfilled the Gospel), by Saving the man who Believed in Him as Savior! When it says “so loved” in John 3:16. It is not saying “God loved the world So much” In this verse the word “so” is an adverb as some of you know. The adverb “So” modifies in which way God loved “the world” Look back to John 3:14-15 to see in which way God loved the world. And it’s not even “world” as we know it. But it is “Kosmos” an orderly arrangement.

Love this verse & thanks for the explanation of it in more detail. Yet by definition 'Eternal Life' is the exact opposite to 'Perish' is it not? Dictionary.com definition Perish, to die or be destroyed through violence, privation, etc.: to perish in an earthquake. Otherwise the lost would be given eternal life too, only not in heaven but in torment.
