Our favourite gouges for wood carving.
In this vide we share out favourite wood carving gouges. Over the years we have been fortunate enough to grow a wide selection of wood carving chisels and gouges. Some of these gouges have become essential to the wood carving we do on a daily basis. In this video we share the number sweep and width of each gouge that we regards as our very best.
We also share some thoughts to help anyone who is looking to buy a new set of wood carving gouges, or if you are looking to add new wood carving gouges to your collection.

Thanks for this interesting video. I have A lot of gouges, mainly bought here in Canada. Most of the old chisels we found here were made in UK : Ibbotson, Melhuish, Sorby, Spear & Jackson, Preston, Mathieson, Herring bros, Buck bros, Ward & Payne, Howarth, Butcher, Taylor, Woodcock, Addis, Marples, Tiranti, Sorby, Dodge, etc. My prefer go to gouge is a Addis no 4/ 18mm.

Hi Stephane, Great to hear from you. That is quite an impressive list of companies there. Shame to think that many of them no longer exist. The Addis you describe is nearly the same dimensions as the one we regard as one of our favourite gouges too. Fantastic to work with, shame that the are so rare today. Thanks again for getting in touch and supporting our KZbin channel. All the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop. 👍👍

A year or so ago I purchased a 12 piece carving chisel set. I was thinking at the time I would try my hand at carving. I did not know about your channel at the time. They were not expensive so I will not be out much if they do not work out. I have not honed them or used them yet. The widest one is 1/2 inch across. They are of different shapes on the ends and one curves up at the end. I assume it is for bowl carving.I had also bought sharpening stones of 2 different grits...#1000 and #6000. I also bought a Slip Strop that includes a Flexcut Gold Polishing Compound. I have not attempted to try and use any of these products yet. Am I on the right or wrong track to this new hobby? I enjoy your channel and will keep watching here from the U.S. Take care and a very happy, safe, and healthy 2022 to you and your family!

Hi Michael, great to hear from you as always. Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year. It sounds like you have some useful kit to get going with. Whilst we recommend trying to get hold of vintage gouges, these are few and far between and a collection can be built up in time. From what you have described it certainly sounds like you have the right kit to get you moving in the right direction and as your interest and abilities develop you can always add to what you already have. We always recommend getting started within a reasonable budget. Learn about the wood, the grain and carving techniques can be done with reasonably priced gouges and chisels. Learning how to sharpen is another skill that will be essential as you develop what you are doing. Feel free to contact us whenever you have any questions or confront and issues. Thanks again for supporting our KZbin channel. Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year. All the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop. 👍👍
