In October of 2010, I lost my oldest brother. In October of last year, I got into a pretty bad car accident where I was rear ended at 50mph at a stop light, but walked away basically unscathed. On Friday, I was listening to this episode & got into another car accident, again rear-ended at 50mph, while the car in front of me was turning onto another road (my luck is immaculate, obviously). I was listening as you guys were discussing what your gravestones might look like & burial practices you might be interested in, and you guys were entering into your discussion on legacy, etc, and I came very close to being killed or permanently injured because of a person who may have been drunk and nearly pushed me into an oncoming truck. I was able to get control of my car back, & walked away from it with some whiplash, some serious back pain, and a hefty bruise from the steering wheel, but otherwise okay. But these themes from this episode have stuck in my head since the accident. I was listening to you two talk about death and legacy, and thinking about my last car accident and the goals I had for myself when it happened. It was more than a little surreal to have this happen two years in a row, and I’m going to have a fairly difficult time getting back in a car again after this. I guess the point of my comment is to say, I’m familiar with death and accidents and even if you’re young, you don’t know how long you’ll be here. I think after this accident I’m going to sit down and write down some goals for myself & my life, & write down the things I’d like to happen with me when I die. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong time to take the time to write these things down. If you change your mind later on, just change what you wrote down. Celebrate and love yourself enough to think about the person you want people to remember when they see your headstone or your ashes or whatever else. Take your goals seriously while you’re here. You’re worth that much. I’m feeling very thankful to be here today, even more thankful than I was in my previous accident. Thank you both for being here to comfort me through the accident I had & for being open in talking about death and legacy and the goals you have for yourselves. As oddly and almost eerily timed as it was for me to hear this conversation between you both, it motivated and inspired me.

I’ve been working on my family tree for some time now, and I have to say that gravestones are awesome. Finding an ancestor’s gravestone - usually on the internet - it thrills and humbles me. The gravestone is for people that come afterwards, not the decedent. They’re a link to the past for future generations.

I think it's pretty cool that there is a cemetery that holds events. That's very Victorian of them. I think that's very cool as long as people are respectful of the headstones I don't see any problem with lounging on the graves. It's very cool that they are using the the area instead of locking the living out. I think all cemeteries should be used as public spaces. That's pretty awesome. BTW I think that planning ahead, preplanning your death plan, and making sure you have a proxy to carry out your wishes.

My great grandmother passed away this past summer at age 96. In her obit, they included a photo from her at age 70 and I think it was a perfect choice. Anyone who she knew that was still living knew her as a grandmother, so it wouldn’t have made sense to have had a photo of her at age 25 in her obit. But, by the time she passed she was extremely frail and had lost most of her hair. But, at 70 she still had a full face, thicker hair, and a warm smile. It was the perfect age to immortalize her at because it really felt like her.

Funeral Director here: so many untrue things lol. In the US, they cannot bury someone in your grave after “so many years”. You can inter more than one person but the family pays for and signs off on that additional right. For cremation; you can choose to have a full service with embalming followed by cremation. Also the cremated remains can be placed in the same type of grave space as traditional burial with a headstone or Roman Column. There are also other options in cemeteries including niches, boulders, private estates, and so much more.

*Rhett* : "You can call it selfishness, but directing some actual attention to yourself, learning how to love yourself so that you then can actually become a better citizen and love people better, and be less selfish and less self absorbed." There's not a single person alive that doesn't take from something else in order to keep on living. We're all selfish. We have to be in order to exist. I despise those who class selfishness as a bad thing. You cannot exist without selfishness. Food/Water, when consuming either of those things, you are automatically the cause for, either the death of organisms boiled in the water, or the food that's been killed in order for you to eat it, be it plant-life or cattle.

For anyone wondering, mausoleum drawers are not that expensive & are significantly better for the environment. My mom & dad are both entombed at an outdoor mausoleum side by side with a few aunties, uncles & cousins. Our whole Catholic family makes up much of a wall near the fountain by a tree. It's lovely. And no, you cannot open the people drawers that would break laws & violate sanctity.

I’m 21 years old and the thought of getting older scares me. I see people I went to high school with getting married and having kids, putting down payments on houses. My parents getting older and not being able to do things they used to do. It’s scary, it’s hard thinking one day they’ll be gone and I’ll be older myself with a house and maybe married with kids. It’s hard letting go of your childhood.

Love this talk. Side note.. I love Rhett's hair and I know he doesn't want to wash it a lot. But just a tip dry shampoo makes it look better.

Before you even mentioned it, I was thinking about Gutless Wonders. THAT's the movie you should make. THAT's the movie I want to see.

I don’t think I’d like to hear the life experiences and learn about two thirty years olds. I like the fact that you guys are how old you are. I think you should continue to play off of that. It works really great for you.

College graduation is only a few weeks away for me. I'm terrified of going out into the "real world", where I'll be paying bills. I've had jobs before, but I have a fear that I'll have to work as close to 24/7 as humanly possible just to be able to afford a place to live. It feels like my life is over because I'll only ever be working. It doesn't seem worth it.

Don't try to approach the owls closely cause you will spook them, I appreciate you doing that. It's nice to hear that you saw one perched though also, I've seen them flying as I work for a park

I know you both have high hopes for possible film and tv projects but I really hope you pursue the novel writing too. I loved Bleak Creak and you guy's could really tell a lot of stories with that medium too.

I agree with you Link, I don't visit graves of relatives that have passed on. I'm being cremated and head stone is up to my five children. I don't want pictures in the paper, no memorial service.

My mom died when I was in high school and I only go to the cemetery when I feel like I’m supposed to, which is holidays and her birthday.

This was an interesting podcast and good reminder. I don’t know my own answer to this. I don’t know if I care enough tbh. Once I’m gone, I have no association to the body. Therefore, I don’t care what happens to it.

I think GMM should start doing more than it has been the past few years, not just all the silly games. While it's fun to watch, I miss things like Mailday, and the ball with all the stuff glued to it, and also just sitting there discussing things or Rhett's conspiracy rants. It needs that variety again. Maybe throw in some skits like the random improv commercials. "Let's Talk About That" has turned into "Let's Play A Game About That" and it gets monotonous.
@threeholePUNCHify3 жыл бұрын
i kind of agree. i really love the games too but like you said i miss the mail and when they used to talk. unfortunately im not sure if their newer fans would like that or it would get as many views
@bucksinsix25913 жыл бұрын
No!! I 100% disagree! I need GMM to be exactly what it is. Mindless, yet entertaining, games that don't require me to think too hard. I watch in the morning while sipping on coffee and eating breakfast while waking up and prepping my mind for the day. If Rhett and Link want to expand to different formats... Fine. I would love to see it, but PLEASE leave GMM alone. It is perfect for what I need it to be.

with the environmental concerns with cremation, in Washington state, there's a funeral home that uses special dirt and microbes to turn your body into soil over the course of a month and then your family can either take all of the soil (it's turns out to be 750 pounds of soil) or take just a small portion and donate the rest to a reforesting program.

I find it interesting that for some of this episode you guys define someone’s peak as someone’s best era in their career. And that’s the time period their picture should come from, as a highschooler I’m curious if this is something that adults generally think, LETS TALK ABOUT IT! 😄❤️
