For sure is not for the faint of heart. I mother any animal (toads, salanders, tadpoles, etc) and my husband found 6 (2 passed already) baby bunnies so dehydrated and thin to where you could see their bones and knew I'd do whatever I could. Never had done it before and ran to buy everything I found to help them. 2 passed next morning and 1 2nd day due to them just being so neglected by the Mom for idk how long and just couldn't get them to thrive. But we have 1 little girl still and she's doing AMAZING! We call her Bun Bun. I'm just scared to let her truly go as a wild bunny again due to not knowing how to fend for herself.

I’m so glad I found your video but wish I would’ve found it yesterday instead of tonight. While watering my garden outback two baby rabbits about 10 days old jumped out of the garden and I could not find its nest or where they even came from. Concerned, I put them in a tub plastic container. I went to the store and picked up some bedding and kitten formula milk with the Kit. I’ve rescued hundreds of Cockatiels when I was a breeder, but I’ve never rescued a baby bunny. Although, I did keep a baby rabbit that was several weeks old and somehow found its way into our garage. When I kept trying to get it outside of the garage every so often it would be back into the garage so I’ve purchased food for it and eventually took that little rabbit out by time it was 11 or 12 weeks and set him free. I called him bunny, Bob. Bob hung around the backyard for the next couple of years and he must’ve found a wife that had babies out back. A few months back, I found a baby rabbit that my cat brought to my back door. I gladly thanked our cat and rescued that baby rabbit for a couple hours and set him free a couple hours later. I just wanted to make sure that there were no injuries and it was safe to release it back into the woods where we live. Now, a few months later, finding these two baby rabbits, and being concerned of not seeing the adult rabbit, presumably the mother, anywhere in sight. I kept them overnight, fed them the formula and I went outside this evening and saw the mother. The craziest thing happened. I found a KZbin video with a baby rabbit crying, that is used for other predator animals for hunters. For the life of me, I never expected to see what happened next. When I tapped on play the baby rabbits mother came running to my feet. She literally ran straight through the backyard and up to my feet no more than a foot away. She kept looking up at me as if I were the babies, wondering, where are my babies. My heart sunk to my stomach and I felt so horrible that I quickly came inside to get the baby rabbits and set them outside so that she could find them. I played the sound again and no sooner than a couple minutes later, a wildcat came right by where I was playing the sound. My heart sun to my stomach, thinking the worst that the cat would take off with these baby bunnies so I brought them back inside and I felt horrible because I know the mama is outside, waiting to feed her babies. How in the world am I going release these babies back outside to their mama when I know that there are feral cats out there that may eat these babies? Do you have any tips or suggestions? I feel so horrible that I didn’t find your video sooner, but will appreciate your response. Thanks so much in advance!

That is a tough one. It sounds like you are doing the right things. I would say what you have been doing is right. They are always best with their own mothers so if you can get them back to the mother that would be best. As long as you can watch from a distance you should be able to see if the mother comes back and also be there to protect them should a cat come up. Even when they old enough for release the worry about predators stays with me. Sadly these beautiful creatures are so vunerable in the world.

I totally relate with this video. My boyfriend ended up finding two ~5 day old orphaned rabbit kits at a desolate construction site a few weeks ago. After the few rescues that specialized in rehabbing rabbit kits in the area told us that they couldn't take them in, we were left with the choice of dropping them off at a "generalist" wildlife rescue (which we were told was not a good idea because the babies would likely be used as food), commuting out of state to find a rehab center that would take them, or taking up the task of rehabbing them ourselves. I can 100% agree that the ANXIETY during the entire process is SO real, especially considering the information on how to properly rehab these little guys is very, very difficult to find and there is a lot of conflicting information out there. I truly think the high mortality rate recorded at wildlife rescues is because caring for them is so time consuming, expensive, and meticulous, and the rabbits are easily stressed if they're handled by a bunch of different people. It took us hours and hours of research the first day to feel even remotely comfortable with the process. I definitely lost sleep over it, but it paid off - they are now three weeks old and thriving and (hopefully) one more week away from release!

I rescued a young cottontail bunny recently in the afternoon and left her with a wildlife rehabilitator that night. I don't know anything about caring for wildlife and felt it was the best decision, however, I got so attached and still have anxiety about how she's doing now. That little baby stole my heart and I have difficulty relaxing. Hoping I can visit her and hear updates.. last I heard she is doing a bit better. Thank you for sharing your experience with us- I was hoping to learn more about caring for wild bunnies and I did. These are adorable and I'm glad to see they were doing better as the video progressed.

I think what you did was the most unselfish thing you could do. These little guys aren't the easiest to rescue. They can get startled and die just from the stress. Hopefully your wildlife rehabilitater will be able to give you occasional updates. I must say when I released these little cuties into the wild I too felt anxiety. I don't know for sure what happened to all of them but at least two or three were making regular visits in the beginning. I still have bunnies visiting the back yard but as they became more wild I wasn't able to tell who was who so I can't say for certain that they are all my bunnies. I like to believe that that they are my bunnies or at least descendants of my bunnies. At least I know I got them to adulthood and that they thrived in the wild for a while, maybe still. Thank you for doing what was best for the little guy!

@@juril001 Thanks so much for your response, and sorry I'm just seeing this now. That's so beautiful- I love that you still have bunnies visiting you! I'm sure they will always remember you and what you did for them. The wildlife rehabilitator didn't really give me updates as much as I tried to get a hold of her, I learned I just wasn't going to get anything from them. But, I heard very recently that the bunny got better though she didn't fully act like the other bunnies (it looked like she had neurological damage when I took her in so there probably wasn't much you could do about it), she was placed with other rescued bunnies and released somewhere safe for them with lots of land and marshes. I'm glad to know that she is better but I wish I could have learned more about the process, and I think that's why I always find myself watching videos like these now. Thanks so much again for sharing your experience and rescuing these cuties! This really warms my heart.

You will do great! With bunnies who haven't opened their eyes you will need to take a warm cotton ball to simulate the stimulation of the mother's grooming tongue on their bellies and ano-genital region in order to release a stream of urine and those pinhead-sized poops. This will avoid bloat if you aren't already aware. Thank you for caring for them.

I called and talked to my vet and was told what to feed and not feed it. I think I might be turning it lose after it gets bigger. Oh and no the cat did not hurt it I was very thankful for that. My miniature black panther has discovered a bunny nest evidentially and has brought three baby bunnies home, one of them I did not get to in time. Two are ok and safe in my 75 gallon aquarium. I think the ones I have are a little older but not by much. My panther is a serious hunter and hell on wheels for any small mammal specially mice which I am more than happy when my panther does them in. My master plan is to take the rabbits down by the creek where there is lots of cover and stuff to munch on. I will make sure the panther is in the house so he won’t follow me. The creek is a ways off from the house and not in his immediate hunting area. They really like celery which has lots of water in it, broccoli is also a hit. I picked up a bag of mixed garden salad too along with way too much rabbit food items. They like fresh cut grass I clip with a pair of scissors nice and long. Thanks for your very informative video. :) Nothing cuter than a baby bunny. :)

When did you know they were ready to be released? Where did you release them? We adopted one last week that I found in the middle of my driveway after the yard guy finished up my neighbors yard. I'm wondering if he got the nest with the mower, or just spooked it while it was out exploring. Regardless, I couldn't find a nest, and haven't seen any others. With the heat, and the predators in the area, I couldn't let him sit there. Since I couldn't find a nest, I opted to do my best (with my kids help) to keep him alive. I've got a cat nearby, and two big dogs of my own - last thing I need is the kids to find the bunny on the door mat when they leave for school in the morning! Ours had his eyes open when we got him, and would fit in the palm of my hand. He has grown considerably, eats plenty of fresh greens from the yard, and plain oats, and I've been feeding him formula at least 1 time a day, usually twice. He's not overly skittish, but definitely wants to burrow or hide when he is startled. I feel like he could probably feed himself the greens, but he definitely still enjoys the formula. When is it safe to release? How did you make that call? For the record, we call him Marshmallow Butt (my boys are 7 and 10, it's hilarious to them!). Thanks for the informative video, and great footage!
@juril0012 жыл бұрын
Sounds like your bunny is about 3 to 4 weeks based on what you said about the formula. You can usually tell by their fur, their ears and their size but it is hard to say without a photo. Wild bunnies usually leave their nests at about 4 weeks but they recommend that you keep them to about 6 weeks to give them the best chance possible. I released my 4 in our backyard and they came back to visit for quite some time. Good call on the formula. That helps get him the nutrition for growth. He will slowly wean himself off of it. Be sure that the week before you release him to start putting him in an outdoor enclosure that is safe from predators so that he can get used to the sounds of nature. Great job setting a fantastic example for your kids and for saving a little life!

Hello, I have 3 baby Cottontails & the mama, ( the babies eyes are still closed) mama runs around free. I leave a bowl of fresh food for her where she otherwise hides during the day and we have put a barrier near the nest to keep my 2 dogs from them, the nest is under my stairs going in/ out of the house. I check on them a few times a day for movement. At what point does the kits (kids get a box and to check if she fed them
@juril0013 жыл бұрын
I would totally leave them alone. You have done great so far. Momma will take care of them. If you are checking on them don't worry if you find them gone one morning. Momma may move them if there is too much activity and the probability goes up if you move them or change the nest at all. Keep in mind Momma rabbits will stay away from the nest all day long and only feed up to twice a day. They do this to keep the babies safe and not draw predators to the nest. This is completely normal.

Thank you so much for caring for them. The first day I rehydrated them with Pedialyte before starting any formula but it sounds like you are already past that step. Another with fresh formula in it.

@@juril001 thank you so much! Mine also had eyes opened already. They are refusing the syringe feeding so I've been leaving 2 shallow dishes, one of water and the other formula. anyone looking for this video or advice should know that baby cotton tails have a 90% mortality rate when they are taken in by humans. Leave them where they were if they aren't injured or keep a close eye on the nest and do your research everywhere else before going to youtube! I'm sorry but you aren't feeding them with the bottle correctly. If you're going to make a video giving advice, you should be absolutely sure that you're doing it correctly. I'm glad they are fine and its great that you helped them but you should feed rabbits that small with an eyedropper or a very skinny syringe with a special nipple on it. If the milk is all over the rabbits face, you're giving it too much. Baby rabbits can breathe in the milk and aspirate, causing lung problems and they wont live through that with all the added stress. And if you try to clean off it's face with warm water, you can't use too much and they have to be in a warm area or they can get cold and go into shock. Also Goat milk mixed with KMR and unsweatened whipping cream is a better formula if you can find it. Also weening them off the milk should be done by slowly mixing more and more water little by little every feeding. Feed them, and leave them alone. Give them space. If you're going to release them, you don't want them to be friendly! you want them to be scared of you and other predators! Overal this is a helpful video, but some of it isn't. Why make a video giving advice that you're not 100% sure of?
@juril001 Жыл бұрын
Exactly... In the first few seconds of the video I explain that someone has taken them from their nest after construction in the area and that I don't recommend disturbing them. In other videos I explain how the mother only comes to the nest only twice a day. What appears to be abandoned rabbits is just momma protecting her babies by trying not to call attention to the nest. Momma is always best for these little ones. If they have to be rescued finding a licensed rescuer is always the best option though at certain times of the year rescuers can be overwhelmed by the number of rabbits in their care and will not take them. In those cases there are many websites that can help you out and seeking multiple sources is important do not rely on KZbin alone.

She found one a little ways from there. I got back from her. Gave it a little water, waited till dark and saw a mother in the field. She was watching a dip with 3 dead and one injured. I removed the dead and tried to keep the injured penned in till I could get the one we found out to her. By the time we got back the injured was gone! Maybe she got it or maybe it drug itself 20 feet to the thicket. I put our in the dip. Curious it was not a nest though. THAN a few hours later I put my dog out and she found another but under the concrete which I suspect was yet another rabbits nest. So now ... Did I put a baby with the wrong mother? How did she get one across 20 feet that quickly or did the injured one go that far? And what to do with the one that belongs in a nest right within reach of a dog that wants to EAT them. These does sure have poor taste where to leave their kits.🐰
@juril0014 ай бұрын
I sometimes question their judgement as well. We had a neighbor bring us an injured Kit from her back yard. The rabbit kept nesting in the fenced backyard with their dog who kept finding and digging up the nests. You did your. Doing the right thing often times leaves us to wonder what happened from that point on. Even with our rescues, that moment of release into the wild is full of doubts and worry. Nature is a hart mistress.

Update on bunnies! Both are right as rain so I took them down by the creek this evening just now. They are happy and healthy as far as I know ready to be on their own no worse for wear. They have their own brier patch far from the house and the cat. With luck they can avoid the foxes, hawks, eagles and badgers that inhabit the neighborhood. We don’t have any large snakes where I live so they have that going for them too. On the other hand I still have Mickey Mouse the cat drug in running around in the living room. I think the cat brought him inside just to play with him having caught him several times now just to let him get away again, weird kitty. 😐

LOL... it sounds like your bunnies may be in for quite the adventures. Sounds a little like Watership down. Ours find our back yard to be fairly safe with lots of hiding spaces though I must say our 95lb German shepherd would love to chase them if we would let her.

Why is it bad to feed more than twice a day in a underweight baby? I currently am on day five with the sole survivor of dogs vs den. He’s maybe two weeks old from what I can guess. Eyes are open. I’m trying to do my best. Feeding goats milk to him. With clover from the yard and alfalfa hay in with him at all time. Maybe I’m not doing him any favors but without littermates he seems to get cold. So I’ve had him on my skin a lot to keep him warm. Especially after feeding. I try to keep the milk warm but it doesn’t take long to cool down. So far so good. At what age is old enough for release?
@juril001 Жыл бұрын
Try if you can to only handle them when feeding and only twice to three times a day. Rabbits can leak toxins into their system from fear, pain, and stress causing Septicemia and sadly causes many of the deaths in young rabbits. Overfeeding is also one of the leading causes of death in baby rabbits. If they are furred out you should not need to keep them warm. The formula cooling down is one of the biggest obstacles that I have had. I usually try to have several syringes in a mug of hot water. When one cools off I will switch to one of the warmer ones rotating them back into the hot water. Usually a bunny will leave the nest at 4 weeks of age but 6 to 8 weeks for a release gives them a better chance out in the wild. Here is a great article that hopefully will assist you in all of your endeavors. I find it helps to have something written down to refer to. mohrs.org/orphaned-cottontail-care/#:~:text=It%20is%20best%20to%20release,bit%20more%20savvy%20and%20nimble. I found two abandoned cottontail babies on the road with no nest near. I’ve been feeding them KMR and whipping cream twice a day. They mostly just sit around all day after eating or cuddle up in a towel. Is that normal? They come out and sit around when it’s feeding time though

The bunny will not die just because you touched it and it does not mean its mother will abandon it. If you think you can get it back to its mother that is your best bet. I have 6 Orphans been taking care of since day 1, mother was killed :(. I have been feeding the same as you did as far as formula. I've read that you should add an probiotic around day 7-10 as they need bacteria in their stomachs , did you do that?
@juril001 Жыл бұрын
You are correct. I have had some rabbits that did well without the probiotics but it is a very good idea to add one. Better safe than sorry. I have had so many rescues and I am trying to remember if this group had them. Normally I will add it if I see anything out of the ordinary, low weight gain, diarrhea, discoloration in their poop.
@MarkDaGardna3 жыл бұрын
Since day one, the rabbits I took in would not take to the bottle. Rather they eat the Alfalfa and drink water and formula from bowls. I am considering releasing them because they seem to be able to forage on their own. What do you think?
@juril0013 жыл бұрын
petkeen.com/how-to-tell-the-age-of-a-wild-rabbit/might help you determine their ages and if they are ready to be on their own. You might want to first get them used to the outdoors in a protected cage or enclosure. Good luck.

What is the exact recipe amounts you used to feed them? My daughter is so upset because she was working excavating a large piece of land and while on the excavator she saw 1 tiny bunny. We believe the others if any, were accidentally killed by the machine because she searched and that was the only one found. She left him on the side of the land that was Undisturbed for a day and went back and he was still there alone and cold. We brought him home. He fed good only 1 time in 24 hrs. We’re extremely concerned. And today is Easter so nothing is open, we’re hoping he’ll survive til tomorrow when we can bring him to a wild life center. Am I making the recipe correctly. I’ve followed a recipe from several sites all saying 2 tbls of formula and 2 tbls of spring water, 1/4 tsp of Bene-bec and 1 tsp of cream, 3 drops bunny vitamins
@juril0013 жыл бұрын
rabbit.org/faq-orphaned-baby-bunnies/ Will have all the info that you need from formula amounts and mixes to rehydrating them. Don't worry about him only feeding once. Their momma only feeds them twice a day and pretty much stays away from them in between feedings. They don't take to formula or an eye dropper right away and the first few days don't eat much at all. The animal rescue person will be able to help. Keep him warm. That is the most important thing.

I have 3 baby bunnies I've had going on day 3. I think they are about 2 weeks old. Their ears aren't up yet. I've been feeding them with a dropper. How much (mLs) did you feed each bunny? You did a great job bunny mama 🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇
@juril0015 жыл бұрын
These are approximate but they were close to what I used getting these guys to release age Newborn to One Week: 2 - 2+1/2 cc/ml each feeding (two feedings per day). 1-2 weeks: 5-7 cc/ml each feeding (two feedings per day). (depending on bunny..may be much LESS if smaller rabbit!) Newborn babies (if eyes closed) all need to be stimulated to urinate and defecate prior to or following feeding until their eyes open. (Except Jackrabbits do not). *See how to below. 2-3 weeks: 7-13 cc/ml each feeding (two feedings). Domestic eyes open at about 10 days of age. Start introducing them to timothy and oat hay, pellets and water (always add fresh greens for wild ones). 3-6 weeks: 13-15 cc/ml each feeding (two feedings-again, may be LESS depending on size of rabbit! A cottontail/brush bunny will take so much less!! Half this at most.) Cottontails wean and release about 3-4 weeks and jackrabbits much later (9+ weeks), whereas domestic rabbits are 6 weeks. 6 weeks-9weeks for Jackrabbits only, continue up to 9 weeks with formula, gradually changing to a dish for the warm formula, replacing the formula after 9 weeks slowly with a a dish of cup-up tiny banana or apple pieces. Good luck with your little ones. Baby bunnies are an emotional roller coaster but so worth it. We see bunnies all the time now in our yard and I can't help but think I had a hand in that.

What is the proper mix for the kitten milk substitute?
@juril001 Жыл бұрын
3 to 1; 1 part formula powder to 3 parts liquid. (I would usually do 1 part cream, 2 part water.) Formula is only good for 72 hours after it is reconstituted or mixed, then the vitamin and minerals will begin to evaporate, so mix small amounts accordingly. You can also add small amounts of probiotics to the formula to aid in digestion.

They were brought to me by a neighbor. Normally I would tell someone to not disturb them in that the mother only feeds them twice a day and leaves them alone the rest of the time. These had been in a construction area, the nest destroyed. The person that picked them up had already had them for over 24 hours when they finally brought them to us. They are always better off with their own mother if there is a choice.

They say that you can release them from anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks. They were about 2 to 2 and 1/2 weeks old in this video. Their eyes were opened when they were brought to us. I have a rescue right now that I plan to keep for the entire 6 weeks because he doesn't have siblings that would give him a better chance.
