Santa Maria Huatulco was celebrating the 486th anniversary of the titling (qualification) of its town.
The history & traditions that are in this area of Oaxaca are incredible & worth celebrating throughout a full week of events & believe us, Huatulquenos know how to do so!
David, a few of our friends & I joined our most trusted tour guide, Lalo Martinez of Treasures of Huatulco, to this year's bull riding / rodeo event.
We learnt about the charros & the intricacies of a jaripeo.
We watched each bull rider perform his own mini ritual of faith, as one never knows when it's his last ride... Although the music was loud & fun, this struck us as quite spiritual.
We listened to Banda 200 La Joya del Puerto - a Puerto Escondido based band of 15 guys who played & danced their hearts out for us. It certainly set the mood & was loved by all, many of whom even danced during the rodeo.
The intermission brought a wonderful male singer who had ridden a number of horses that were exceptionally well trained, who seemed to have danced along to the tunes.
Unfortunately, at this point, our group had decided that although there was great seating for viewing, our bums were slightly square after four hours of a concrete bench & of course that meant, it was taco time!!!
Lalo took us to a fabulous taqueria in Santa Maria Huatulco, where we all enjoyed some awesome tacos, after which we were dropped back off at home.
Thank you again to Lalo at Treasures of Huatulco, we can't wait till our next adventure together!
