Charro & Steed (a Documentary on Mexican Rodeo)

The Mexican Rodeo, or "Charreria" is cultural tradition that beautifully represents the history and heritage of Mexico. In this documentary short film, we take a look at the impact it has as it begins to make its way more and more into the United States.

The culture of the cowboy, has its origin, in the north of the territory of Mexico 🇲🇽 it is necessary to mention that the historical fund is in Chihuahua, Mexico, where the first cowboys emerged, as well as the first original cowboy hats. Cowboy acquired his lifestyle, clothing and work, from the Mexican cowboys who lived in the territory of Texas, in those days, Texas was part of Mexico, before the annexation of the territory to the United States, the US-American Cowboy was born of work of the Mexican cowboys of northern Mexico, who taught it to the US-Americans, the historic US-American cowboy of the late nineteenth century emerged from the cowboy traditions of northern Mexico and became a figure of special importance and legend of US-American Folklore becoming a cultural icon. Although the US-Americans do not admit it out of pride, the cowboy emerged with Mexican origins.

The Cowboy👢🐴 culture has its origin in northern Mexico 🇲🇽 The creators of this art were the Mexicans, (not the US-Americans) the modern Cowboy was born in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, then the Mexicans raised cattle in the current area of Texas, when it was Mexican territory, before the annexation to the United States , the lifestyle, work, clothing, dance, were immediately imitated by the US-Americans, after the annexation of the territory of Texas. California also had skilled men on horseback, according to Richard Henry Dana, who wrote a book about that region in 1840 when it still belonged to Mexico. As described: When they make long trips, they ride one horse until they get tired and grab another, go over the support and bridle and, after running off the animal, take a third and so on until the end of the trip. There are no better cowboys like the Mexicans in the world.

I absolutely loved this documentary very fact based very accurate!! I have an Escaramuza (drill team) in Colorado and I didn’t even know some facts that were stated, so in a way you taught me about my tradition and what I’ve been doing for years! Props to Pedro Torres for being very well educated on this, I think he was the right person for the job on explaining the Charreria. I’d absolutely love to have one of these documentaries be taken in Colorado definitely a life goal! Amazing video put together Matthew for you to have filmed, edited, and narrated. 1000/10

Definitely a touchy subject. In my experience spending time with this particular group, I saw no abuse. Not saying it’s not out there. But these people were very loving and caring towards their animals.

@@MatthewWagnerFilms Initially my only interest was in the clowns and bullfighters that keep the cowboys safe. I thought I'd 'sneak' in to get coverage but really just wanted to get enough footage to be able to show the guys so I could get an interview and gauge their interest. And then I shot my first rodeo and was HOOKED. Good grief, they gave me a full access pass and I was close enough to those bulls going by that I could reach out and touch them. It's no exaggeration to say that my life changed in that moment. To answer your question, right now I shoot the entire event and then produce a 2-3 minute highlight reel for each event (there's several on my channel). I've also used the footage to produce a music video for a little band I play in. I still have plans to do the clown/bullfighter documentary, but right now I'm just enjoying the opportunity to saturate myself in rodeo action, culture, atmosphere. The people are really wonderful. Sidebar, I talked to my friends at the local Mexican restaurant, and they've offered to get me into a local Mexican rodeo event some time soon. One may even come and serve as a translator for me. We'll see what happens.
