David Sylvian is one of my favourite artists, and I have not seen many other reaction channels discover him yet. Sylvian is a class act, such taste and style to everything he does. His career has followed a similar path to 60's icon Scott Walker, starting out in a pop band, then going solo and developing some extremely sophisticated albums, gradually getting more and more avant-garde and into some very challenging waters which did leave me behind, but his earlier albums are SO relaxing and my first choice when wanting to chill.

The whole album Dead Bees On A Cake (1999) is incredible and is arguably one of his best. You both will love his music. Check out Rain Tree Crow (1991) with his former band mates from Japan - Richard Barbieri (Porcupine Tree) Sylvian’s brother Steve Jansen on drums and the incredible Mick Karn on bass. All of these musicians had a huge influence on Steven Wilson. Thx 😊for this great reaction ❤

David Sylvian's masterpiece is the double album 'Gone to Earth'. It is like journeying through incredible landscapes, a haunting beautiful album. Check out 'After The Bullfight', 'Taking the Veil', 'The Boy With a Gun'. He has delved deeply into ambient, atmospheric music as well, his album 'Alchemy' is a stunning, haunting release of ecclectic, experimental atmosoheres Like Peter Gabriel David Byrne and Kate Bush, he is one of those rare artists that can reach into cross-culture influences, combine genres, and expand instrumentation without ever seeming like he is over-reaching. A brilliant artist..
@louise_rose9 ай бұрын
I completely agree, "Gone to Earth" is a beautiful album with a great guest cast ot talented musicians, and "Before the Bullfight" (yes, it's before) is an amazing ten-minute song about human mortality, or coming face to face with an impending loss. Clearly influenced by Pink Floyd, but the influences are completely absorbed. "Silver Moon" is a superb song too, very emotional and again about separation, loss and longing.

David Sylvian, lead singer in hugely influential late 70s / 80s band Japan. Richard Barbieri was their keyboardist, went on to be part of Porcupine Tree. When Japan split, Sylvian started solo career, the remaining band formed JBK - one Steven Wilson would often appear and play guitar for them. Steve Jansen o drummer of Japan and JBK was also a big influence on Gavin Harrison. Connecting the dots here on roots of Porcupine Tree. Japan, David Sylvian and JBK are very rich pathways you should explore.

You finally have done the artist who I feel is a modern day poet who sets his poetry to music. Investigating Sylvian's career is a very fun task. This rabbit hole is similar to Steely Dan in that there is a transformation that occurs in his music. From his start in Japan where they were at first influenced by The New York Dolls then took Roxy Music and Bowie influences and became the ultimate New Romantic band. Then came Sylvian's solo career where gems like Secrets of The Beehive (his masterpiece) and Gone To Earth(featuring his collaboration with the iconic Robert Fripp. Sylvian reunited Japan and he alone wanted to call it Rain Tree Crow! Can you imagine The Beatles getting together again and calling themselves something else? Influenced by the German band Can most songs were done in a jam session like style. Well the result was beyond brilliant and demonstrated how peculiar Sylvian's artistic desires were. Sylvian would also do two albums with Can member, Holger Czukay, that is how much he admired Can. With regards to Fripp(Nick your favorite guitarist is Holdsworth mine is Fripp), he would joining together with Sylvian in a unit called Sylvian/Fripp. At one time, Fripp wanted Sylvian to become the singer of King Crimson and Sylvian refused. In addition, Sylvian formed a group named Nine Horses including his brother Steve Jansen who was in Japan and Rain Tree Crow as well. In that group Sylvian continued his musical excellence and sense of experimentation. One of Sylvian's most important collaborators is Ryuichi Sakamoto. The Japanese composer who started out in Yellow Magic Orchestra have worked together since the early 80s. One of their sublime masterpieces was the theme to the film Forbidden Colours. As a musician I am always blown away by Sylvian's melody and words juxtaposing with Sakamato's sparse but well thought keyboard work. Forbidden Colours kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXjCdp6ioJKmr80 The song I Surrender is from the album, Dead Bees On A Cake. Sylvian considers this to be one of the best songs he's ever done. There is a spiritual component that is inherent in Sylvian's work. He grew up a Christian and had elements of that faith in his music. By the time of I Surrender, Sylvain had studied Hinduism and Buddhism. Those influences are quite evident in this part of his career. He lived in Minnesota with his then wife, Ingrid Chavez, the co-writer of Madonna's Justify My Love. Sylvian recorded the album at Paisley Park Studios owned by Prince. Tommy Barbarella who was part of Prince's New Power Generation plays on the album. This is a very bizarre coincidence as I was just reading a post my friend had done on Sylvian's Secrets of The Beehive. I did a search for the latest from you two and voila' a great surprise.

I love to see people as they discover and learn David Sylvian. But that's a Flugelhorn dammit? I'm too late to this part but I and going to see if you did any other Sylvian songs. If you didn't? Strap in and find Orpheus.

Strange choice as its not a typical Sylvian track and Dead Bees is not considered his best work. In my opinion the track is too long and some of the lyrics are pretty weak. I'm a massive fan of his first two albums.

Not my style of music, there are some components that I did like, but overall, not so much. Everyone's got different tastes... No more movies for me... I google it and I have seen that movie, 2-7 so far.

#nicknlexrequest So now you can jump to the CD I got you *Sylvian & Fripp* - "On the First Day" and checkout my Reaction Suggestions from the Box Email details ;). I really don't know his "Solo" stuff but I figured it sounded like this, a kind of music I have come to love (checkout the CD's from Peter Murphy, The Gathering, Steve Hackett, Kim Mitchell, Trevor Rabin, Blackfield, Casualties of Cool, and Animal Logic, I purchased for you. Not all songs are like this Sylvian track but _you'll get_ where I'm coming from ;). He is from a band called "Japan" that I don't know much about either (just remember the name), which I'll have to look into. Their wiki-page says; Initially a glam rock-inspired band, Japan developed their sound and androgynous look to incorporate electronic music and foreign influences. Also considered an early "New Wave" and "Synth-Pop" band, which makes sense. VERY much up Lexi's alley :D. Michael seems to know you guys well :). Almost forgotten that "Richard Barbieri", keyboardist for Porcupine Tree was part of "Japan" as well. So . . . "Chill Out Already" :P ;) :D For your "Familia", a soundtrack for your night drive . . . kzbin.info/aero/PL2DU3TBNutEf_U9Xt6UQ4jgZ0AECI9UWv (next "parts" linked in the description of playlist) - Nice breakdown guys. "RoooOOOOOooooosse Buuuuud . . .".
