OPETH are a band of virtuoso musicians. They are very well versed in almost every genre from blues to jazz to classical to acoustic folk to deth metal sometimes all in the same song! They ARE their OWN genre. They are one of those bands whose style is so diverse you can play 2 different songs by them to the uninitiated, & they will have no idea it's the same band.

I recently also got into Opeth after several years of discovering Dream Theater, Tool, Unleash the Archers, Fates Warning, among others. With a classical music education, it makes me appreciate so much more the art of progressive metal. It makes me appreciate more the 'growl', of which I never used to be a fan. Kudos to you both for discovering Opeth :)

@@Celatra fairly simple once you get your head around the beat. That's the point of the comment. No one's saying it's impossible but we are saying it's unique. @@Celatra yeah the whole song is 4/4 but let's be real. majority of people have no idea how tf to play these kind of syncopations. In the grand scheme of things yeah it isn't that hard, but you're not figuring it out on your first or second listen.

Well , Tatiana from Jinjer has stated that Michael is a big influence for her growls. She aspired to sound like him when she started growling. She didn't want to sound like a girl with her extreme vocals. Also , Opeth is one of Eugene's (bass player from Jinjer) favorite bands.

The reason it feels like an abrupt start to the song is because of a mistake when printing the album. It's called "Reverie/Harlequin Forest" but the Reverie part was mistakenly added to the end of the previous song, rather than the start of this one. So what you're hearing is actually just Harlequin Forest. If you look up the Opeth song "Atonement" and listen to the last minute of that one, you'll hear the "Reverie" part that is meant to start this song. Either way, cool reaction. This is one of my all time favourite songs, and definitely one of Opeth's best imo.

Hey, Nick'n'Lex, loved this reaction, thanks :) Opeth are fantastic at the smooth segue between jazzy grooves and punishing. I note you referred to Jinjer as a Death Metal band... while Tatiana is a great growler, and they're a great band, nobody who actually listens to Death Metal is going to agree with that assessment :D So here are a bunch of actual, but relatively accessible Death Metal recommendations, in case you want to actually go there! Like every other metal genre, DM has plenty of sub-genres, which I've indicated here: DM - Bolt Thrower, 'Anti-Tank (Dead Armour)', 2005 Melodic DM - Insomnium, 'The Killjoy', 2006 Melodic DM - Dark Tranquillity, 'Final Resistance', 2002 Technical DM - Arsis, 'Shattering the Spell', 2008 Progressive DM - Disillusion, 'Back to Times of Splendor', 2004 Death'n'Roll - Entombed, 'Chief Rebel Angel', 2001

Suggestion! Unleash the Archers - Awakening (Full Band Playthrough on KZbin). Whereas Rush is more of the Canadian prog rock scene, Unleash the Archers is of the Canadian prog metal scene with a female lead singer. :)

Opeth's always welcome! Just remember to return to Joni Mitchell who's also very much admired by Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth-s mastermind). The song Jericho was my recommendation - to me one of the greatest songs of all times (keep an ear out for Jaco Pastorious at the peak of his sensability/creativity... 😊

Blackwater Park is my favorite song from Opeth, but I believe this song is more like an acquired taste for people who are not used to growls, since this song is all growls. If you liked that Harlequin Forest was not all growls then you might want to listen to Ghost of Perdition, Deliverance. Then increase the amount of growls with Master's Apprentice and Blackwater Park

This is awesome. I always bug my gf showing her reaction Videos and genuine first listens. Keep it up. If I may, try listening to When by Opeth. It’s earlier Opeth so their extreme metal influences are at the forefront while beginning their trajectory to Prog. Thanks guys keep it up

I don't know how you can react to one song instead of listening to the entire album. This album was a full album concept.
