RE: PAUSING, EXPRESSIONS & AIR-INSTRUMENTS:
Please be mindful that we will pause (we prefer to react in the moment & to avoid copyright strike), we will react with enthusiasm, smiles, tears, conversation, exchanged looks and air-instruments. We are expressive by nature and are truly very quirky in every sense of the word. This is who we are and this is what we’ve got to offer. We understand it may not be for everyone, but here's to hoping you all enjoy and we absolutely love positive comments and feedback.
RE: LIVE VERSIONS vs STUDIO:
Check out why we haven't uploaded any live versions... yet. They will be coming, we promise!

You can hear that the other guitarist in this song - Fredrik Akesson - has more of the shredding chops then Mikael. His licks are faster and his touch is lighter. But for Opeth, Mikael doesn't want shred, he always prefers emotional, expressive soloing and that is what he is really good at. And Fredrik is fine with that and adapted his playing. Sometimes Mikael still makes use of Fredrik's abilities and lets him deliver some fast soloing, but even then it is always tasteful and never for showing off alone. They do it if it fits the song.

Actually, I would say you're both partly right about his accent.nwhen he speaks, he quite clearly has an accent, but when singing he switches to a more American accent. Many singers find singing in an American accent easier (many Brits and Aussies adopt American accents when singing). However, there are still some elements of his accent in his singing, which gives him a less readily placed sounding accent when singing. If you're used to American singers, or singers who have a perfect American singing accent, will notice the subtle differences from a perfect American accent.

Hey Nick N Lex ("Welcome Baaack") :D People are not mentioning a very important factor in this track as well . . . the "Hammond B3 Solo"! Its so full of soul and intense feeling, he's making it wail in pain. That's their 1st Keyboardist "Per Wiberg", and its up there with Jon Lord of Deep Purple, and Ken Hensley of Uriah Heep (and people should checkout the band he was in before and currently; "Spiritual Beggars"). That right there is in my Top 10 Keyboard solos. And Nick, the other guitarist made his debut on this album replacing Peter Lindgren (of 16 years with the band) prior to the making of Watershed; "Fredrik Åkesson" who is also the Lead/Rhythm Guitarist along with Singer/Guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt. This track is on my Top 5 songs from Opeth. Its one of his most soulful songs, that is even different than all the tracks on "Damnation". Its got a 70's retro feel, but with MUCH better modern production. But they have always mic'd their instruments meticulously to hear them clear and up-front. Also, because you've said it before; The "bleed-ins" or transitions (a track that comes in while the previous track ends) don't necessarily mean that its a Concept. It happens on a lot of albums, its just a creative way for tracks to "flow" together, much like a track with an abrupt ending, and the next song starts either like POW in your face, or more subtly, both for "impact". But this from Akerfeldt himself: - Washington Post Express: I've heard you say "Watershed" isn't a concept record, but I never heard you say that I would be convinced it is one. - Åkerfeldt: It has the flow of a concept record - and in a way it's not a concept record but in another way it is. The lyrics are about my own experiences this time around and how I've changed since I became a dad. It just changed me completely, like I got a new set of eyes. But it's not a fictional story like a generic concept record; it's not about a character. Before you become a dad, you never figure how it's going to change you, but it does; it's the same with everyone I talk to who has kids. This new chamber of emotions opens up that you didn't really know existed before - and all of the sudden you're sitting in front of the television crying because of the things going on in the world. [Laughs] - Washington Post Express: Some of the songs that mention children are quite dark. Is this you expressing fear for them? - Åkerfeldt: In a way they are, but some of those songs you're referring to - like "Hessian Peel" [and] "Hex Omega" - they were inspired by a [former] girlfriend who committed suicide while I was in the studio. ... She had a son who was the same age as my oldest daughter, so it was a pretty big source of inspiration to me to write about that; I ended up writing three songs. - Washington Post Express: Does her family know you wrote these songs about her? - Åkerfeldt: I never really talked about it, to be honest. I haven't mentioned it at all in interviews. We weren't in touch anymore. We were together for a couple of months, and I always kept track of what she was doing and that she became a mother. But when we were together, she always had really deep problems. I think she was on Lithium and she was very depressed; she was always like that. I always heard what was happening with her because my mother and her mother were friends - they worked at the same place. ... And there was never any good news, but when I heard she had her kid I was really happy about that and hoping that she'd pull together, if not for herself then for her kid. Next thing you know she was dead. She was a very complex person". Very tragic story :(. About the detuning (from a different interview): "I didn't have an ending for the song; there was a few options to end a nice song like that. Either you end on a high note with a nice chord or a fade out or something. But I just came up with the idea that we should end it in a freaky way and I'm just basically playing this ending lick on the nylon string guitar and I told Fredrik to de-tune the guitar in real time as I was playing. So obviously it sounds very ugly but that was the whole purpose. We didn't know if it would work or not but it did." - Åkerfeldt This makes sense as the next song; "Porcelain Heart", is very foreboding with a melody that gives a more "creepy" feeling. I'll put my Opeth request in the hat: "Dirge for November" off of Blackwater Park. Because of the ending part, its soo gorgeous after the "darker" beginning, its almost like you never want it to end that its soo dreamy and atmospheric. Also, I vote that, especially with certain bands like Opeth; after you hear 10 tracks from a particular band, you also (along with other studio tracks), react to a "Live" video of said band ;). What do you guys think? :) \m/

The most "accessible" sounding Opeth song I think he's done. Very radio and ballad sounding, but still SO good. I gotta throw a suggestion to you - Strange Brew (by Opeth). It's a 70s sounding prog rock gem that goes a lot of places and is a really fun listen.

Toller Song, tolles Album, tolle Reaktion ! :-)

Moooore Opeth... :D Suggestions/recommendations/requests for three post-"grrrwl" songs: Opeth - Next of Kin (2019 album In Cauda Venenum.. awesome vocals, awesome playing, awesome prog rock, awesome song!!!) Opeth - Lovelorn Crime (2019 - same as above. an absolutely hearth wrenchingly beautiful song with some of his best vocals ever.. and it always gives me goosebumps when I listen to it) Opeth - Death Whispered a Lullaby (2003 album Damnation, lyrics and backing vocals by Steven Wilson, another great song) This album, Watershed (2008), features the new members Martin "Axe" Axenrot on drums and the virtuosic guitarist Fredrik Åkesson on lead guitar. The previous drummer, Martin Lopez, had to quit due to health issues while the second guitarist and the band separated because he couldn't put enough into the band, wanting to focus more on his family and thus "Axe" and Fredrik joined. Fredrik as a guitar player is just ridiculous. He can play the most soulful melodies, solos etc. as well as go into Satriani/Vai/Petrucci territory. He's a full guitarist and not a one-trick pony. Mikael is a really good player as well but he can't play the really fast and technical stuff (string skipping, fast legato runs etc.) that Fredrik is a master of. Since Fredrik joined Mikael focused more on rhythm and acoustic playing. Most solos from before Watershed were played by Mikael and he played great melodies that fit his composition but he wasn't a master at playing like Fredrik, at least not when it comes to more advanced techniques. As for singing vs talking in english, most European vocalists can sing with a pretty convincing accent while they talk with a very strong accent. It's like the part of the brain that singing use turns language into musical elements and being a musician using his/her voice can sing in smooth english while sounding ultra-european when talking. Pretty much every European vocalist I've seen in interviews that sings good/great english, sounds very different when talking - pronouncing the words completely different with strong accents. It's a curious thing really.
